What Country is This?

As a little kid, I used to accompany my dad on jobs. He was a plumber. I can still remember sitting down with all the guys on a job site at noon and listening as someone tuned into Paul Harvey on a radio somewhere. We ate lunch together silently, someone nodding in agreement occasionally, or shaking their head in amazement, waiting until Harvey took a break in his commentary to comment on an item.

>

I have listened to Paul Harvey during the noon break throughout my growing-up years at different jobs, throughout my time in the service, all through my adult years while my family was growing, and even after my family had grown up, the kids had left home, gotten married, and had kids of their own. I have been with him as his son, Paul Harvey jr. took over The Rest of The Story, during sicknesses of members of his family, during national tragedy and crisis, elections, and even times of national triumph.

>

Thinking of Paul Harvey makes me remember my own father because he and I spent so much time listening to Harvey and his news. I miss my dad terribly at times and now I’ll miss Paul Harvey, as well.

>

It’s just one more blow to remind me that the America I was born into, the America I grew up in, the America I fought for, the America I have spent my life so proud of no longer exists.

>

Supplanted by greedy people, America has become an enigmatic swamp, a mire of political posturing for power. It has become a haven of simpering politicos employing obsequious means to encourage an unimagined influx of immigrants, legal or otherwise. Those who, coming here not to take part in the freest culture in the world but for sordid gain, have become a major influence in national policy; people who do not love freedom or care for personal liberty with responsibility but choose to exercise egregious license. Lovers of rapaciousness, they will cast their votes for those who declare a willingness to feather these gluttonous, ignorant, sweaty masses’ nests with other people’s hard earned money.

>

What does that all have to do with Paul Harvey? He was one of the last voices in the old America to proclaim the greatness of this country; he spoke of, and encouraged freedom with responsibility.

>

I believe Paul Harvey loved America passionately and am relieved he will not be here to witness the crash heard ‘round the world as an overbearing weight of selfish, nescient people who do not care about the America of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Quincy Adams, or Abraham Lincoln crush this once great land under their feet.
