Why does my dog or cat lick his paws?

  • Check the foot for a sore.
  • Look inside the paw at the sore site for a thorn, sticker, or grass seed.
  • Some sore paws are caused by dew claws growing back into the pad of the foot.
  • Make sure the nails are cut and in good condition checking to make sure one has not grown into the pad.
  • Check you Dog Food for corn, wheat gluten, and soy products.

Simply run your finger between the toes while feeling for an increased temperature (indicating infection) or obstruction such as a hair mat or dirt ball. Run your finger under the end of the nail to be sure there is no pressure being applied by the nail to the paw. Next, check the "thumb" nail (not all pets have these) making sure it is not causing trouble. The bottom of the foot between the pads and between the toes are common places for mat formations, throns, and grass seeds.

If you can't find the cause for the paw licking such as a sore and the nails are trimmed and in good condition you should check with your vet for other causes.

Pet foods are often times a cause to your pet licking his paws. Many foods on the market today are causing trouble for our pets, the foods are poisin to our pets. How did your pet food rate?
