Prep Work Most Important Before Painting Trim

I have a paint company located in Pell City Alabama and so here on my hubs I'm going to give some professional painting tips for all you do it yourself'ers. This is the way I would go about doing prepwork in most cases. Look out for other articles coming soon e.g walls, ceilings and see all other articles already written. We mainly deal with Sherwin Williams paints and products but for best advice see your painter.

If you are wanting sleek smooth finishes on your trim or walls prep work is the most important part before you even think about painting your home. Prepping is the building block. It is like laying a concrete foundation before building a house on top of it.

New Trim

Most trim is actually preprimed with a light coat of paint when it comes out straight from the factory. If it is still raw prime it and then sand it before doing the following. The builder will have nailed it together with a nail gun whether it be door caseings, crown moulding or base board. So the first thing you need to do is take a square sanding sponge and sand over the whole piece knocking off any burrs the nail gun would have left and any roughness. Also concentrate on sanding in all of the details. If you dont do this every defect will show through on the finished product. Paint doesent hide mistakes. Once you have sanded you have the choice to either putty the nail wholes or to start caulking in the joints and the outline of the trim to the walls or ceilings. Never do both at the same time because you will rub the build up on the trim and therefore it wont be sleek. Make sure your putty is flush with no indentations or lumps for that matter. This really does take practice. I have never seen a perfect job from a home owner thats why most people will actually hire a painting professional. When you are caulking it is just as hard to do if you are not experienced. I have worked with painters that have had 20-30 years experience that cant even get the caulking or putty perfect and smooth which is why I had to fire them because as I say prep work is the most important thing to me you can do for a good paint job. Make sure you wipe your caulking with wet finger tips and use a wet rag to wipe excess off your fingers, this way it will also leave your fingers slightly wet. Now you are ready to do a finish coat. Sometimes it may require 2 finished coats of paint. The good news is that if you are going to be doing it yourself you probably dont own a spray rig. The latest trend at the moment is actually brushing your trim so that you purposely leave brush marks on it. But remember the only way to get it perfectly sleek is to spray. Even by using the same paint, brushing versus spraying you will acheive a totally different reflect. So keep in mind what sort of finished result you want before starting to paint.
