Penn & Teller: Bullsh!t on Hypnosis 1/3

Stick with Bill Nye the Science Guy for your scientific queries...

Those guys (especially the big fat one that does all the talking) try so hard to be smart that they forget that nobody knows everything and some knowledge is subjective. They act like they have all the facts and that they are debunking modern myths and legends, but they are not exactly disproving anything with concrete science. They are just taking obviously sketchy situations and embarrassing people in an attempt to look like these smart, clever guys who can't be fooled...

I guess I would have more respect for them if they were like MythBusters who actually whip out measuring devices and break-it-down for their audiences the exact science behind the myth they are debunking. Also, to the MythBusters people, EVERYTHING isn't "Bullsh!t".

I mean, Penn & Teller throw that word around worse than a 5 year old who just learned to swear. You'd think they had tourettes.

And, furthermore, I am of the belief, that just because something isn't "perfect" doesn't mean it is not useful.

For instance, I just finished watching their episode on Hypnosis, (which is what inspired this rant in the first place) and I just felt like they were attacking the practice so much without even considering the usefulness of it. [Then again, that is the purpose of the show. It's sort of like FoxNews. They want to appear "hard-hitting" so that their audience will walk away feeling informed and superior even if they're just talking nonsense!]

I'm sensitive to the issue of hypnosis, because it was one of the things that got me interested in psychology in the first place. It was the realization that the mind is fragile, malleable and as infinite as the universe.

Penn & Teller found the nearest quack and sideshow act and used them as examples of the foolishness of hypnosis...

These guys never asked, for a second, whether or not it is possible for the human mind to experience something that is not really present. They don't care why so many people actually believe in the reality of what they are experiencing. They just want to look like the "smart guys" that "caught you in a lie", "exposed you", "uncovered your dirty little secrets"...

People like that are just jaded individuals, with no substance and no joi de vive...

It's not even in the interest of science, because, like I said, they don't even try to dissect scientifically, the truth behind the things they are talking about. They just want the chance to use potty language on national TV over and over again so they can look cool to their cult audience.

So, in conclusion, I'll say it one more time, Penn & Teller's show, Bullsh!t is Grade A Bullshyt!!!

I didn't know Penn & Teller were in the debunking business. Last time I heard from them, they were illusionists doing chock-magic, and were actually very good at it. I guess when than fizzles, one takes what one can get, ay?

I don't know much about Penn and Teller either, but I get the idea that they don't think much of hypnosis. I've never seen their show.

IMO,hypnosis is an extremely useful technique for lots of things--people have successfully used it to stop smoking, lose weight, deal with depression, manage chronic pain and numerous other things. I don't think that anyone knows exactly how it works--but it does work. It's no more mysterious than meditation or guided relaxation.....just another useful tool in the bag of tricks.

I agree. I learned self-hypnosis when I was 19 yrs old. It's an excellent relaxation tool.

I've never seen the show, and am only vaguely aware of it.  By the way, Penn, the big guy, appears regularly on Glenn Beck - and need I say more?  He constantly fawns over Beck and shares many of the same beliefs as Beck, so your comparision to Fox News may be more on the money than it first seems to some. (Yes, I know Beck is on CNN/HN but they only hired him to look more "fair & balanced"!)

Great hub, great undercover work here as well, routing out the BS that passes for anti-BS!  I wish they would have stuck with their original material, which was non-partisan and funny.  Now they look ridiculous - especially Penn, who rants off some of the strangest things!

dutch84,

Too true. I've seen the show and everything you say is right on. Whatever falls under their narrow-minded "empirical evidence microscope" is instantly branded false and implied to be somehow idiotic, and any evidence to the contrary is excluded. Nice to see a hub about a show that has irritated me for years. Stick to the magic show penn and teller.

Penn & Teller did a great job on alien abductions. They showed how ridiculous it is, not that normal wouldn't agree with them anyway. Believing that aliens are abducting people shows sub-intelligence.

It's nice to see a show that goes against the crap the rest of the media tries to dish out as being true.

Keep up the great work, P & T.... you've got a fan here!
