People, Change, Ethics and Responsibility

Change occurs daily in our lives regardless of work and lifestyles. Whether we want to or not, we must deal with each change as is needed. In this essay I will talk about two changes that many of us face in our lives, and some things that can be done to help ease the transitions. Although we may get used to doing things a certain way, or even living our life in a certain lifestyle, that can all change within a moments notice.

The first example that I decided to write about would be a change in management. In our jobs, many people come and go, but when it is a manager that is leaving, the employees usually are unsure what to expect next. When this happens, at times employees may feel the need to rebel. I believe, if managers would have a meeting to introduce the manager taking their place it would help the employees to slide into the position of a new manager over them easier. Another thing that could be done is the manager that is leaving could stay with the new manager, until they become confidant and comfortable with the employees and the employees with them. This would also help the transition, and perhaps help them know that the manager is not trying to “abandon” them so to speak.

Another example of change that I would like to talk about, would be one that we deal with in our lives daily. This change would be living with the growing up of our children. When our children are born, we do everything for them, and as they grow older they become more independent. This is hard to deal with as a parent. Although we are not

managers in this case, it is almost as if we are watching the person that we “teach the job to” start to do it themselves. We do not get paid for this job, but it is our job as parents to teach our children what they need to survive daily. When our children turn sixteen and they are able to drive a car, we must learn to deal with that change as well. Now, our children can drive themselves, they do not have to ask us to go anywhere.

I could have spoken about many things in this essay, but I chose these two topics, because in my mind we deal with these two changes most. When we are hired at a job by a specific manager, we get used to working beneath them, and we learn their ways. It is hard to deal with anyone else coming next and changing those ways. When we become a parent, we raise a child a certain way, and have to stand aside as they grow up, watching the change in them, which changes our lives as well. Change is everywhere and whether we like it or not, we have to deal with it in our own way.

The second question in that I decided to answer is the difference of opinion for social responsibility and ethics from the employer. Although I currently have no employment, in my former job, we had a very large difference of opinion about many things. My manager believed that it was alright to yell, or correct an employee in front of

Others and I believed, personally, that is was extremely unprofessional. If a manger has a problem with a certain employee it is my thoughts that employee should be pulled to the side, and spoken with in private. Whether the manager likes it or not, there are not many customers that would like to see or hear yelling while at a store.

Another difference I had with my manager was ethics. Although I believe everyone has a right to his or her opinion, I believe that ethics, even if it has a place in the work atmosphere should be kept to ones self, if it is something demeaning to others. Managers, have a right to speak their mind to employees, but it would go a lot smoother if they did not use a racial slur, or somewhat demeaning statement to do so. In the end, everyone has freedom of speech, but it is better if you do not speak harshly to your employees.

The third question I decided to answer was the one referring to helping save the company money, and leading a team to do that. We were told to choose three different techniques during our answer, and I will discuss those in the next few paragraphs. There are many techniques out there, and choosing the one that is right for the type of problem you have is crucial. Here are a few techniques that might be able to help you in the future.

The first technique I would like to discuss is Assumption Articulation. In this step you must recognize the assumption you are making about the situation. If you do not recognize your thought as an assumption, you may never get past it to solving the

problem before you. In the case of solving the company money, the assumption would most likely be that people are spending too much, or that there are things that need to be cut back upon. Instead of assuming, perhaps you should step back and make a list of things that are going wrong with the company first.

The second technique I believe that should be used would be look at the front and back entry points of the problem. Just because some problems are solved by starting at the beginning of them, not all can be solved that way. If you look at a problem from many different angles, then you may be able to find a new way to solve it, or even a way to go around the problem. All things can be solved; it is just how you solve them that are your predicament.

The third and final technique I would like to discuss would be using a rival hypothesis. This would give you two explanations of the problem and why you have it. It is better to have two different options instead of just one. Not everything is done because of a specific reason, some problems have multiple ones. This gives you two ways to look at the problem, and therefore two possibilities to fix it.
