I'm sure by now that most people of heard of the parents from China who wanted to name their baby @ or that poor little girl from New Zealand who's parents decided to call her Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii. Luckily for her she gets a chance to have a normal life with a nice normal name because the judge in her custody case has since made her a ward of the state so that her name could be changed. Unfortunately most people will have to live with their odd names at least until they are old enough to have it changed.
I just read a new study that says children with strange names do better in life. It probably depends on the name but I doubt that Talula Does The Hula would agree.

Very interesting! Non Christian Chinese used to call their children "kow (dog), Choong (germ) and all sorts of other animals so that evil spirits will not know that they are children and kill them. Those people are superstitious. Rather entertaining, I think!
I agree with many of the insights you have made here. Parents may feel they are being creative by giving their children an offbeat name, but as a result I have seen many youths and adults go by self chosen nicknames :).
My daughter has a somewhat offbeat name, (Willow,) and I'm hoping when she's grown she won't turn around and ask me, "Mom, what were you thinking?!?" I just loved the name so much.
I like the name Willow actually. I was thinking more like Apple, Orange, or when people name their children after countries and rivers :).
I like Willow myself, and my sister named her son Lake. I thought that it was a little strange at the time but it turns out that it's actually an old family name. The ones that really bother me are the weird ones like Moxie Crimefighter.
Well fellow hubbers, if you live or visit in South Africa, you are going to come across some really odd names, especially amongst the previously disadvantaged residents of our fair shores.
Wiseman, Knowledge, Wisdom, Clever, are amongst the more common ones. Then there is also, Knowledge, Intelligent, Happiness, Wellbeing, Doctor, Professor, the list is quite endless, and these are not nicknames, they are the names that they are registered with in their ID books.
It sounds like they are being named for qualities that they would like their children to possess.
Those qualities make nice names... but Rumer? Pilot Inspektor? Dweezil? Ugh! And people look up to celebrities!
I don't know why, but I have always really liked the name Dweezil. Don't get me wrong, I never would impart that name on to a living human being, but... it's kind of cool. (For a cat, or dog.)
I hadn't realized that there were quite so many children of Hollywood-types that were being so oddly burdened! Fun hub!
How about the famous Lear family of Airplane fame. (The Lear Jet.) They named their daughter, get this, Crystal Shanda, and the rest you can fill in!

where did these people get these names? I'm not going to name my children these awful names. Who ever picked these names better have a near by docters. there's going to be a bunch of bullies and others picking on them. WHY? why would you pick these names. you should try going to school with those names. maybe they won't have any freinds. that will teach you butt's a lesson. maybe you will be pist.

I think that it would be better to save the really odd names for your pets and spare the children.
