Well, someone's finally done it - Created a website for other people to load pictures of their fellow Wal-Mart shoppers (or Wal-Creatures, as they are called).
peopleofwalmart.com is the creation of three guys who like to shop at Wal-Mart. One night they were all out shopping there and, as usual, saw some strangely dressed people - In particular, a woman who appeared to be a stripper, holding a leash with a toddler on the other end of it. After that, they went home and created the website, asking their friends to upload photos, never realizing the site would take off as it has.
I myself have been to Wal-Mart late at night (it's open 24 hours) and that does seem to be when the oddest-looking shoppers materialize. In this age of camera phones, it's pretty easy to snap a quick photo, and usually when no one is looking.

On September 2nd, when this hub was first published, the site was practically inaccessible because of the traffic - too many hits! As of today (September 15th), it loads very quickly. Some of the pictures are pretty unbelievable all right - Shoppers snapped as they were browsing the aisles for Cheetos and dog food include a very old bearded gentleman with his shirt open, revealing huge breast implants, a tuxedo-wearing man with toilet paper hanging from the back of his jacket, and a woman with really, really long nails - I mean like two feet long! There's also lots of photos of men either shirtless or, inexplicably, one man snapped wearing a hospital wristband and a shirt literally hanging in shreds - There's an interesting story right there.
So, who are these three young founders of peopleofwalmart.com? They are named Andrew, and Adam (his brother) and their best friend Luke. They refuse to give their last names - and for good reason. I am not sure that everyone photgraphed is excited about seeing their image plastered all over the internet, which makes me wonder how they have managed to circumvent legalities in the process.
This site could just as easily have been called peopleoftarget.com, peopleofcostco.com or peopleofkmart.com - Or could it? It does seem that there is a greater variety of shoppers at Wal-Mart who, shall we say, dress more creatively or appear to be a bit more unusual than your average shopper than at other places. I don't actually know why that is, but I bet if they did studies on this, they would determine it to be accurate.
Me, I never go anywhere without looking my best - Not because I think I might be photographed. I just like looking nice - And good thing too, because I probably wouldn't be one of the chosen ones, since the site seems to be full of people with strange hairdos, outlandish clothes or a thousand tattoos or something.
OK, let's see - mangoes, pellets - OOH, sunflower seeds!

I have to admit, I have people-watched sometimes and people who look the most unusual are the people I remember the most.
The site's creators say that its purpose isn't to ridicule anyone, and refuses to accept photographs of phsyically challenged people, overweight people just for the sake of being overweight - instead, overweight people who are sausaged into tiny outfits and everything is sort of spilling over. They also do not accept pictures of people whose unusual attire is because of religious or cultural reasons. They think of themselves as sort of the Mr. Blackwells of the new millenium, citing Wal-Mart's worst-dressed customers or weirdest cars in the parking lot (one car had cat figurines super-glued all over it). They also accept pictures of strange things people find in the aisles, like funny product packaging (Hot Wheels toy helicopter with the word 'surveillance' misspelled), or action figures like the Arizona Cardinals' Matt Leinart (who is white), depicted as an African American. (That one might be kind of collectible, actually.)
Andy Warhol once said: "In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes".
He was horribly, horribly right.

We always shop at WalMart late at night...our town has zombies and they're fun to watch. People walk around with no expression at all...they just slowly shop.

I saw that when Yahoo was promoting it a couple of days ago. The pictures are pretty funny. I didn't know that you could post pictures of people like that without some kind of release... apparently you can. It's not just Walmart though, it's just people. I see people dressed in all kinds of crazy ways at Home Depot, Fast Food Restaurants, etc. I guess Walmart doesn't sell many mirrors! I don't expect people to go out doing errands looking their best. But they could at least look presentable don't you think?

I loved this site I thought the photos on the Walmartpeople site showed a side of America rarely seen in the movies and I loved the video with the children making pictures with their bodies on the pavement during the song. Thanks for sharing these sites with us.

A full moon might explain howling and hairiness, but doubtful about explaining the get-ups one usually sees at Walmart.
I once was the only white face in a Walmart, and had the MOST wonderful time talking with everyone. It was truly a delight. Stereotypes be damned. People can be fabulous anywhere, regardless of any other descriptions. And weird. And funny. And odd. No rhyme, no reason. Humanity is a puzzlement. Best to laugh at ourselves, I expect.
Costco. Ahhhhh, Costco. Lots more Beemers and such in the parking lot, but I'll bet if they kept howl-at-the-moon hours we could be just as entertained if a similar site *happened.*

You're a humorist, i'll say. I always buy stuff from Wal-Mart stores because that's where our driver/agent will bring us whenever we go ashore in a particular U.S. state (being a seaman). I'll check the site..hehe.

This is funny. Everytime my brother and his friends would go to Walmart they would talke pictures of people with mullets and see who would get the most pictures.

My co-worker shared this site a couple of weeks ago and it was testimant to why I hate that place. I haven't been to Wal Mart in almost 2 years because of their "clientele." You can't go there without being stuck behind a large non-English speaking family with 7 children running amock. I can't count the number of pregnant bellies I've seen hanging out of a too small old t-shirt as the teenage girl reaches in her purse for a cigarette while her 30 year old baby daddy pays for the Doritos she's craving.
That smiley face can bounce around and slash all the prices he wants but you'll find me at Target.
i will go anywhere for a good bargain. thank you for your comments, you guys. p.s. here in Arizona you can't light up in a public building anymore, or within 15 feet of a doorway.

I went to that site, and it's really funny. The trouble is - now I'm worried about going to my local WalMart because I'm afraid someone there will see something about me that they think deserves having my picture sent to the site. :lol:
I really got a laugh when I saw the parrot on the customer's shoulder.
And the Tony the Tiger costume reminded me of when I went to the casino shortly before Christmas and played the slots.
I wore red pants, a red shirt or jacket, and a Santa hat. I was hoping someone would notice since I wanted people to think that Santa Claus ran out of toys so Mrs. Santa (me) had to try to win a jackpot to buy the good kids more toys. I hope you catch Mrs. Santa shopping in the toy department at Wal-Mart.

Hee hee... I did not know that there are so many strange people visiting Wal-mart. I particularly like the picture of Tigger goes shopping.
My mother in law regularly e-mails me recent postings on the sight. The first one I forwarded to my sister with the comment, "Laughed my a** off & even peed a little." She told me she was looking at them @ work & they made her pee a little from laughing so hard, too. Joking or serious...now all funny e-mails must be deemed "pee-worthy." I especially like the commentary by the web dudes.
That site is SO funny, but it always makes me sad when I go to Walmart and just see regular people! Where ARE these freaky Walmarts with all the lunatics shopping?

Thanks Cosette - I did not actually know about the walmart site but had been sent a host of pictures as an email attachment which must have come from there. I must admit I had thought of doing something similar but with a totally different angle to it. Trouble is I would probably get my head busted before I was sued ;-) Good hub...I liked it.

I heard about this site a few months ago, as my other half jokingly sent it to me after an afternoon of dread for the Wal Mart trip I would have to make that evening. Though I have never submitted a photo, I have seen many "WalCreatures" lurking about, and instead of dreading the trips now, I actually become amused at the thought of going.
