Bottled water initially started off selling water by claiming it originated from springs, but later they started filtering regular water and selling them without mentioning this obvious fact. Today Pepsi admitted that their bottled water comes from Public Water sources.

Corporate Accountability International has been urging Pepsi, Coca-Cola and others to mention that the drink comes from the same source as tap water. Until now they had refused but finally complied to state this fact on the bottled water label. Pepsi will mention in their Aquafina brand that it comes from "public water source" before they mentioned only P.W.S without any explanation.

"If this helps clarify the fact that the water originates from public sources, then it's a reasonable thing to do," PepsiCo (nyse: PEP - news - people) spokeswoman Michelle Naughton said Friday.

The Corporate Accountability International has also asked Coca-Cola co., to mention in their Dasani water brand. But for now it will remain the same, Dasani claims they mention that the water comes from public water source in their site. But I doubt the customers know, they still think it comes from a spring source. Coca-Cola spokeswoman Diana Garza Ciarlante says the Dasani label clearly states that it is purified water.

Bottled water sales is a good revenue source for Pepsi and Coca-Cola and have a healthy profit margin compared to their cola brands, which are selling less because of health concerns.

Just one word instead of bottled water you can filter the water yourself with Brita or Pur home filtering system. Pepsi and Coca-Cola are just deluding the customers.

Thats Mandm, can't believe everyone is in a stealing mentality, it has become worse since 9/11. Can't believe they will sell water for 15 pounds costs more than gasoline.

Mandm, that is human nature unfortunately. I hope the situation improves soon.

Cgull8m, this is good to know. I was outraged at what they charge for bottled water, anyway, before I knew that it was simply tap water. Legal robbery.

Even Pepsi had water, but this one sells the same as Pepsi, just cheating the public. I hope people are more aware and don't drink blindly. They say it is a multi billion dollar business equal to video gaming business.

Aquafina and Desanti are the only two mainstream bottled water brands (that I'm aware of) that use reverse osmosis (RO) to purify their water. RO water purification is a superior method for removing all contaminents from water.

Most saltwater aquarium hobbiests use RO to purify water before adding a salt mix and using it in coral reef tanks harboring some of the most delicate animals in nature. Even the US military uses RO to purify saltwater from the ocean for all sorts of freshwater uses, including drinking.

Spring water on the other hand does not imply pure water. Just because a particular brand uses spring water says nothing about the quality of the water. It all depends on how pure the spring water is of harmful contaminents that may have leached into the ground.

Personally, I'll take RO water from Aquafina or Desanti over spring water any day. Unfortunately, a large number of people are ignorant and think if it is bottled "spring" water then it must be good. Some of the comments on this site take that ignorance to a new level.

Thanks Matt, you can do the same RO at home. Yesterday I read an article an alligator died because of eating a plastic turtle toy left over by an individual. All these plastic bottles are lying everywhere and some of them washes into rivers and seas, chocking the creatures.
