Percocet Addiction
67Just about anyone can fall victim to Percocet addiction without even
trying to seek out drugs or try to get high in any way with their
medication. If you continue to stay alive over the years it is not a
question of if you will ever be injured in some way, but when you will
be injured. Given enough time all of us will suffer at least some
injury or pain in our lives, and if we happen to go the doctor or
hospital to get that pain treated, then we might be exposed to
addictive painkiller drugs such as Percocet.
Because Percocet is an opiate based painkiller, it does not
actually treat the cause of your pain right at the source. Most people
do not realize this, but other types of painkillers, such as an nsaid
like Ibuprofen, actually reduce pain and swelling right at the source
of the pain. What opiates like Percocet do is to simply mask the
pain. In fact what they are doing is doping your brain at the physical
level such that it does not care as much about the massive pain signals
that are traveling through your body to reach the brain. Opiates make
your brain care less. That is how they essentially work and that is
how they relieve pain.
Now if you understand this then you can start to see how this will
become a losing battle over enough time. If you abuse the medication
and start to develop tolerance, then eventually the same dose of the
medication will no longer create the effect that your brain does not
mind the pain signals. Your brain will in fact mind and you will be in
pain and be restless and irritable. In fact it will be much worse than
simply experiencing pain at that point because your physical body will
also be going through physical withdrawal from the opiates if you are
not taking enough medication. Thus people can get swept up into a
cycle of addiction because they are chasing that state of mind and body
where they don't feel miserable. It gets harder and harder to reach
this point because our bodies develop tolerance, so you will have to
take more and more of the drug to get the same feeling and relief each
time. This is the downward spiral of addiction and once you get hooked
on opiates like this your only real option is to get off of them
entirely.
Luckily there are other ways to manage pain without having to use
opiates. At first, any opiate addict is going to claim that nothing
else works for them at all and nothing helps. This is probably going
to be a natural reaction due to the nature and discomfort of
withdrawal. After getting through the physical withdrawal symptoms
that might last for 3 days to a week or so, the person can then start
to look at managing their pain through other methods. Pain clinics and
alternative therapies can help with this.
Percocet addiction symptoms
If someone is running out of their prescription too quickly, that would
be the number one symptom right there. Also going to multiple doctors
or lying about how much they have taken. Anyone who is taking too many
opiates will appear to be sluggish and drowsy at times. They will
appear dopey. If they cannot get any opiates or have run out then they
will be restless, irritable, and discontent until they can get more.
These are sort of universal symptoms for Percocet addiction and of
course there are other behaviors to watch for as well. Sneaking,
suspicious phone calls, hiding pills, stashing pills, and other
behaviors like this can all point to a drug addiction.
If you are addicted to Percocet
If you are addicted to Percocet and want to get help then the best bet
is to go to a treatment center or drug rehab. There they can help you
get through detox and give you medications that can help ease you
through the withdrawal symptoms. They can also keep you safe and
medically stable while you are detoxing from the drugs. After going
through this medical detox, most treatment centers will put you in
residential treatment, where you can learn more about recovery and how
to live a life without drugs and alcohol. You might also get access to
alternative ways to manage your pain, though this is not going to be
found at every facility and you might have to do this personal research
as follow up with your own doctor after you leave. Most people will
stay in treatment for anywhere from a few days up to a few weeks, and
some people might use medication long term to help them stay drug
free. These types of options can be discussed with the therapists and
counselors at the treatment center.
