Different occasions call for different scents.

Perfumes are concocted in varying strengths, the most potent is perfume and the lightest in concentration is called eau de fraiche.

For evenings and on days you want to make an impression, a powerful fragrance is appropriate. The fragrance is certain to last for hours. On the other hand, light and airy scents give you just the right amount of fragrance you need on regular days when you want to be smelling pleasant without being too obtrusive in others' olfactory senses.

In women's fragrances, here is the order of perfume strength from the strongest to the weakest:

  • Perfume

The richest and longest-lasting with 20-40% aromatic compounds. Perfume is the most expensive of all.

  • Parfum

This contains between 10-30% aromatic compounds, making it the second strongest fragrance. Parfum literally means watered perfume. It is not as strong as perfume and also, not as expensive.

  • Eau de Toilette

A perfume solution with a 3-8% aromatic compound in an oil and water base. Lighter than the eau de parfum and perfect for an everyday scent.

  • Eau de Fraiche

This has the lowest concentration with 1-3% essential oils and the least expensive. The most diluted fragrance of all, just perfect as a touch up scent.

Men's fragrances are entirely different from women's.

Here is how they're categorized from the most potent to the least concentrated:

  • Eau de Toilette

This a perfume solution with a 3-8% aromatic compound in an oil and water base. More subtle and can last up to 2-4 hours.

  • Cologne/Eau de Cologne

This has a typical concentration of about 2-5% aromatic compounds. Longevity varies depending on the brand. Some can last up to 12 hours.

  • After Shave

The weakest with a 1-5% percent fragrance. Generally, men use after shave to close up the pores after shaving but it's also used a base fragrance for other colognes.

Now you know the difference between perfumes and colognes, it would be easy for you to decide on which type of fragrance to buy next. More perfume tips at discount perfume online store, scentiments.com.
