Jacob, my next door neighbor has just had a pergola constructed. I was convinced one would be a great entertaining feature in my garden as well. Unfortunately, I was taken aback by the bill for his pergola kit. That was way beyond my budget.

Unperturbed, I looked on the web. There are plenty of free pergola plans on the web but I could not uncover one in the size I wanted. Also the sketches and how to build guides looked scant.

However I unearthed a result - pergola plans created in a wide range of sizes. They come with detailed and easy to understand guides on building a pergola as well as a complete list of materials required. And you'll discover the tools you require as well.

I priced the materials to check it could be built within my budget. I was convinced I could build a pergola. And I did. In one weekend!

Building a pergola was not as demanding as I thought it would be. And that was chiefly thanks to the precise, detailed and easy to understand guides. I did not have any of those scratching my head wondering where something goes moments!

These are my top tips:

  1. Know why why you would like a pergola. For example is it to offer some shade, as a place to entertain or as a landscape feature?
  2. Pick the location carefully. Examine the garden from all the angles. It could be an ideal time to rearrange the garden.
  3. Mark out the desired size of pergola. Make sure it is not too too large for the garden.
  4. Examine the outlook from all overlooking windows. Are you still happy with the proposed location?
  5. Make sure there are no underground cables or pipes.
  6. Some elements of building a pergola require an additional pair of hands. Make sure someone is willing to assist.
  7. Only use treated wood. Pine is the least expensive. Western Redwood or Cedar are good choices.
  8. And last and most important, purchase the pergola plans in the exact size you need.
