Persecuting a Religion or the Rights of Children

You Decide

I would be interested to hear other people's views on this.

In the last couple of weeks I have been following the story of the removal and eventual placing into protective custody over 400 children that were taken from a religious sect in Eldorado, Texas.

Apparently they call themselves The Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

They are a group that broke off from the Mormon church after polygamy was banned.

They were holed up in a pretty much self contained ranch in Texas encompassing hundreds of acres.

Doesn't sound too bad so far if you leave out the children part does it.

It is okay that these people decided to live in a group by themselves, not interfering with anyone else, but, this is where the nasty bit comes in.

They were forcing young girls to marry and bear children to men who were many years their senior.

They were teaching the young men that this was acceptable and that they were meant to take many wives and procreate.

A young girl blew the whistle on this establishment when she called a crisis center saying that she was 16 yrs old and was forced to spiritually marry a 50 yr old man who already had other wives.

She says that she bore a baby at 15 and was subjected to sexual and physical abuse.

As of yet, they still haven't found this girl.

One of the things that I find interesting is that over 140 women left the ranch willingly.

The outside world was painted as a bad place where the girls would have to cut their hair, wear makeup and have sex with lots of different men.

In a religious sect that was obviously very strict I guess this acted as a deterrent to them leaving or running away.

As far as I can see, cut your hair or be raped repeatedly at age 12, hmmmm, I think I know which one I would pick.

I understand that if it is something that you have known since birth, then you are less reluctant to change it but what were their mothers thinking letting their children go through this.

Now these children are going to be placed into states homes and have to spend the rest of their lives recovering from this abuse.

Another member of the sect who lives near Lockney with his two wives and multiple children says that he thinks it is religious persecution.

Now please be aware that this in no way is condoned by the Church of Latter Day Saints. They do not believe in polygamy and certainly don't believe in the child abuse that this sect has metted out to the children that belonged to their group.

This group is a whole different ballgame.

So, what do you think?

Child abuse or Religious persecution.

Religion at the cost of children?

This is certainly a subject were views will definately be clear cut.  Right or Wrong.  My opinion is that it has nothing to do with religion (although I'm sure there are some who will disagree) and everything to do with control.  Not only were these girls told what you stated but they were also told that they would 'go to hell' if they left.  And beatings were looked at as a way to stop someone from bring dishonor to the 'family'.   This has been going on for generations which is why Mothers allow their daughters to be subjected to it.  It's not only the girls that don't know any better but the mothers and grandmothers too.  Sad situation all around.  All of those removed will be in my thoughts and prayers

Donna,

It is not a freedom of religion issue it is a child abuse issue. I am familiar with another group that adopted polygamy as OK just 10-15 years ago. Already there are reports of girls as young as 9-10 and 11 years old having sexual relations with the pastor, or should I say wolf in sheeps clothing.

The only way they are able to maintain a following is to have absolute control over every aspect of these peoples lives. I wrote a Hub recently that might interest you. How Polygamy Leads to Slavery

Thanks, Tom

Interesting hub Donalee.   I definitely believe that the issue here is the use of a religion to cover up child abuse.  I first started watching Big Love two years ago which I find to be a very interesting show.  If the majority of people were practicing that type of polygamy I would say sure why not, but even the show Big Love showed how the majority of polygamists were cult members that did not have good intentions towards minors, women, or the less powerful men in the community.  The show Big Love tries to make it appear as their cult run by Roman does not condone underage marriage by building up the importance of Rhonda marrying him at the age of consent, but in real life this is not the case.  I found out that the show Big Love was very well researched, which prompted me to first read the book Shattered Dreams when I saw it was recommended on Amazon by those who enjoyed watching Big Love.  After that I went on to read Escape and I have learned from reading about these women's experiences that this is an issue of religion being used to cover child abuse and other abuses.  However, the powerful polygamist men who run these cults hire high powered lawyers to make it seem as if this is only an issue of freedom of religion, but I always like to point they can afford to hire these lawyers and we should be skeptical.  Good hub and thanks for sharing!

Hi Donna,

Religion completely aside, this is about individual agency.

When any adult or adults interfere in this Country with the right of an individual, at any time in their life, to choose for themselves their own destiny - that is abusive behavior and practice, which must be discontinued.

Children who are born into these "cultures" become a victim to the dysfunctional behaviors and practices, that are perpetrated within such. This is wrong under any circumstances.

So much of what adults choose in thier behavior and practices, end up affecting innocent children. But, nobody wants to accept that responsibility, so we don't discuss this type of fallout. In fact, we even produce research on occassion to suggest that adult behaviors do not affect children, etc... That is a pandora's box though.

Good hub.
