Personal Training Marketing
69Personal Training Marketing Strategies
Want to know an easy and super quick way that just about anyone can use to build a personal training business real fast. I'm mean like practically overnight?
This strategy works like gang-busters for personal trainers, fitness coaches and mixed martial arts instructors. But I must warn you, it takes an open mind...
Now If you already have a strong clientele base, then this probably isn't the best strategy for you. As a matter of fact, if you DO have a really strong client base, I would probably go with the exact opposite of this strategy and up my rates.
But if you're just getting started, this is what I would do... well actually this is what I DID...
When I started my personal training business, I was pretty out of shape compared to most trainers. I mean I was probably about 30 pounds overweight.
Truth is I didn't even look like a personal trainer. I looked more like an out of shape football player. For me to stay ripped all the time it requires a certain discipline at the dinner table I just don't have. So I didn't have a six pack going for me.
But one thing I did have going for me is an understanding of what makes people tick. And I knew that if I were to give to others, that they will want to give something back to me in return.
So one day I sat down with of friend of mine named Steve who also owned happened to own the gym where I trained the majority of my the clients at the time. Now Steve had built one mega successful personal training business and his gym was doing some pretty crazy numbers. You should see all the Ferraris, Porches and other sports cars in the parking lot, this was no normal gym.
In detail Steve explained to me exactly how he built his own personal training business and I was totally blown away by the simplicity of it all.
What Steve did when he first started was take on a bunch of free clients and all he asked in return was that they bring him referrals.
Instantly I knew that this was a genius plan… I mean I knew in every cell of my body that this would work for me as well.
I jumped on it like a cowboy on a twelve pack. I literally started knocking on my neighbors' doors to see if they were game, I would talk to people in line at the supermarket, I would talk to servers at restaurants.and I called almost my entire address book from A to Z.
I mean would talk to just about anyone I could anywhere I went. I know I must of been pretty annoying to some people but those people weren't the ones I was focused on… I focused on the ones who said "Yes" and were willing to go with the program.
In less than months I had about twenty-five free clients, and within another two months I had aroundtwenty-five paying clients that I had pulled in from all the referrals from the free clients I was training.
Keep in mind that for a personal trainer who just started his training business and hadn't done any marketing to have twenty-five paying clients was pretty cool, many personal trainers I know who have been training for years didn't even have nearly that many.
At first I had to be willing to do somework and not get paid for it, but over time it paid this marketing strategy paid of big time.
Here's why and how it worked:
1. I believe life helps people who help other people.
2. People you help will naturally WANT to help you if you help them. You will be building a literal army of clients who want to help you by getting you even more clients for your personal training business.
3. You will be training and IN the energy training, which is much better than sitting around wondering where you're going to get clients from.
What's really cool is that about six months down the road I didn't need to do any of this free training anymore. Over time I was actually able to charge extremely high rates and qualify thedaylights out of people before I would even take an appointment with them.
If you're just getting started in your own personal training business and you're wondering what kind of personal training marketing strategies you should use, I say start out helping a ton of people for free and ask to pay you with referrals.
Do know that you will get a few deadbeats, but all you need to do is kick them to the curb the first time they flake out on you.
Then, a short time from now, you'll be able to charge your clients premium rates and you'll be able to be very selective regarding who you'll train.
In the beginning, just going the extra mile and help some people for free and it will come back to many times over.

Chris,
Love your philosophy of giving something - Great attitude and great avenue to success.
I agree with the statement life help you if you help other people. Help people get what they want; and you will get what you want. It is that simple. Nice article!
