Personal preparation for 2012
72Personal 2012 plans
Penny spoke briefly of our introduction to possible earth changes in a recent hub The Journey to 2012. We have gradually been making changes to our way of living since then and are now proceeding at an accelerated pace. Our goal is to share with our readers the preparations we are making and our progress. We have committed to dedicate at least 1 post a week at our blog 2012Truth.com to sharing our personal progress with you. Maybe you'll learn from our mistakes and triumphs and accelerate your plans as well.
First off let me say that we are learning along with you and that we hope you will share some of your plans and insights with us. I am not by any means a "pioneer/ homesteader" type of person and Penny is definitely not either. We like our creature comforts and believe that with the technology now available no one has to live in a cave and eat nuts and berries unless they choose to. We have chosen to downsize and simplify our lives. Independence is the key to our plans and goals. The path we have chosen is to be completely debt free, own our home with no mortgage, produce most if not all of our own power, provide most if not all of our own food, and distance ourselves from "the big" cities. A lot is involved in making these changes but we feel that now is the time to really move ahead.
A little background is important so that you might understand where we came from and where we are now. Geographically we are from Ohio and in June of 2007 Penny and I sold our home and moved to North Carolina. Many factors influenced our decision to sell our home, the most important being the slowdown of the housing market and the decline of the neighborhood we were in. Our choice of North Carolina was relatively easy, our daughter had moved here 4 years before and we missed her desperately, but we also saw the practical aspects of this state as well. The idea of a warmer climate appealed to us for obvious reasons and it also meant a longer growing season for our eventual food gardens. Land was still relatively inexpensive and available. We purchased a home in the city when we first moved here with plans to improve it and sell in a couple of years. Woops, mistake #1, we didn't expect the complete collapse of the US housing market and economy. Now we have to change plans. Our goal is to now buy a smaller piece of land this summer and start to improve it as we can. The planned improvements to the house we are currently in will be shelved and the focus will be on the land we purchase.
After we buy the land that meets our criteria, many projects have to be implemented imeadiatly and details of those will be included in future posts. At this time our biggest concern is with the actual land itself. We have a goal of no less than 2 acres and up to 10 acres dependent on price. We would like it to have some type of old falling down worthless house on it. this is because we want to build our own home on the property. You may ask, why not just buy raw land? The difference between what we are looking for and raw land is that some or all of the improvements are already in place. Improvements such as a well or county water, a septic system, electricity and phone lines already running to the home site, and a road or driveway. Now these may have to be rehabilitated. For example, the road may need a new layer of gravel or the septic system may need cleaned and repaired, but they don't need to be created and built from scratch, this saves lots of money for other projects.
The "other projects" I refer to in our case are:
- Building a garage/storage building for tools and equipment needed for working the property. The garage will also serve as an emergency shelter in case anything happens before we finish our plans.
- Planting our fruit trees and berry bushes and grape arbors so that they have time to become established before we move to our new home.
- Laying out our garden space and beginning to improve the soil so that it will be ready to support us when needed.
- Adding a full bathroom and shower area to the garage so that we can live at the property in comfort while working on it (remember no pioneers here).
- Clearing out and cleaning up the property. Rehabilitating the existing improvements on the property
These are the first year plans out of a three year plan. Later on we'll discuss years two and three but for now roll these over in your mind and see what you think we could focus on instead of or in addition to what we already plan. Next week we'll talk about what our detailed criteria for choosing a piece of land will be. See you then.
Some books you might find helpful in making you own plans are listed on our wesite at 2012TRUTH.COM. Two of the books were written back in the 40s and 50s and have great information that is mostly still current. It is great though to see the mindset of a few generations past and view how these views have changed from one of rugged independence to total dependence on systems we have absolutely no control over.
Let me know if you are making plans of your own and if so, are they similar or completely different? Let me know what resources you are using and why. I would really enjoy learning from you.

You make a good point in that I'll be toast, like most everyone else if the "doomsday" scenarios come true. I would be pleased to be the first piece of toast because I don't think life will be very pleasant on a burning, exploding planet. My whole point in changing my way of life is not based on Planetary destruction but the disruption of civilization. I am of the opinion that in the next few years our world as we know it will end. Especially in the U.S. Not through a hugh explosive cataclysm but a breakdown of our way of life. We are seeing signs of this now. Our petroleum worldwide, is quickly being depleted and I don't think those in power will react quickly enough to make alternatives available. Our industry and economy are in deep trouble. We just won't be able to rely on the promises of the past, we are so used to having everything we want, when we want. I am trying to learn new skills, find better ways to live and be totally self sufficient. If nothing happens in 2012 or 2013 or 2014 or 20... I will be living a serene, self reliant life and I'll be building a place in the country that will have value in the future... or not.
OOOOkay now I understand. That is a bit pessimistic but I can see where you are coming from, kind of scary. I am not sure who delivered the speech but he said that he hoped that a alien force did come to Earth and threatened us for it would bring us closer together. And yes there will be major problems in the near future with oil. The wars will get more heated and the death toll will rise over the resource. And you did say you moved where your daughter is, I was just making this point to make sure your happy doing it and it sounds like you are. I just am hearing people quitting their jobs and buying plots of land in Africa, it is kind of ridiculous, if it all comes and goes they are only left with a piece of dirt, seems kind of silly doesn't it. One man that I read about obsesses over Dec 21st 2012 to the point that he basically lost all his friends and lives in seclusion. This hysteria about this date is making people unable to live there lives. But anyways I think it is great that you are trying to be self sufficient, it is a great goal.
You made my day. I want the world to survive and thrive, but it could sure use our help right now. I hope we all will take a look at how we have been living our lives and make some significant changes. Even small changes will make a difference and maybe put us on a path to healing the Earth much sooner.
I'm glad that I did :). I do have faith in humanity to heal the world there is a lot of good people that also want to accomplish this task, but it is hard with so much hate and discrimination in the world to accomplish this hefty task. I know there are many changes I could make that would benefit the world. (Not using my car using less power etc etc) But its the feeling I am sure most people have; how can one person change the world. However, no matter how many times you hear that one person can change the world (and often it only takes one person to) you still feel as if you can do nothing to benefit the earth (or i do). Anyways I am ranting again... I should probably go do my homework. I hope everything works out.
The Best Option would be to buy a piece of property in North Dakota. Lots of caves up that way. Buy many cinderblocks and take them into your cave and build up walls. Buy as much canned goods and bottled water you can get down there, also dry goods(beans and rice). Try to insulate it and pack the entrance with heat reflecting materials. Make sure you have at least a year of batteries for flashlights. Don't tell anyone where your going... Survival of family!!! Get in and conserve!!!!!
Hello, Do you think the government will leave millons to die? and they would save themselves?
Do you think the government will have a plan and save themselves. They wouldn't even care and just leave millons of people to die?

So after doing all these plans what happens if 2012 comes and goes like every other doomsday prediction? There is evidence concluding that 2012 will occur but there an abundance of counter-evidence. Some predictions are way to far fetched to be true while others could occur. The universal plane that we could be passing through from years 2008 to 2015 could cause unprecedented events due to the strong magnetic fields, but it has not been proven. It is all speculation. I do applaud you for changing your life in order to survive, if there is a catastrophe, but do you really think you will be able to survive a full blown Armageddon even with your preparations? I am sorry to belittle you but in the occurrence of a pole shift there is a chance that no creature at all will survive on earth except those that could survive intense heat and radiation. Humans cannot survive either. Also it is quite probably that if we do pass the universal plane (where the black hole's gravity field is the strongest) it will cause volcanic eruptions, super volcanoes that will send ash into the atmosphere blocking out the sun, making everything unable to grow, throwing earth back into an ice age. There is also other prophecies of Planet X coming back, from the ancient Sumerian culture, which would be on a crash course for Earth. It has four times the mass of earth and believe me this would wipe out life on earth, a meteor about four miles wide would kill 90% of living organisms on earth, imagine what a planet would do... This is the reality, that not much will be able to survive. And nothing may even happen, or a nuclear war could break out later this year. But if you are living your life how you want, and your happy that's all that counts. My point being that no matter how much you prepare anything could happen, in some instances a tidal wave could happen so it would be bad to be on the coast, in other instances it could be good because it is a food source in the event of an ice age from super volcanoes. However, great plans none the less, it is important to prepare as much as you can for such an event. I am sorry for this rant but I hear people buying plots of land in east Africa for the warm climate and high altitude, what if a pole shift occurs and the atmosphere is temporarily absent and earth gets cooked? You would be better off being lower down, into the earth. I am going to be investigating 2012 from all aspects I have already begun research because it fascinates me. I do not consider myself a expert but I do consider myself to have knowledge on this subject. If you want to chat further feel free to contact me. Great hub none the less though.
