Pet Bunnies and Easter
69American Fuzzy Lop
Before You Buy That Bunny
It's that time of year again, and adorable bunnies will be flooding local pet stores, farm supply stores, and popping up at flea markets, but before commiting to that purchase, here are some things to consider.
On average, if a bunny or rabbit is purchased as a gift for a child at Easter time, within a month of the purchase, the local animal shelter begins to see an influx of unwanted bunnies after a child begins to lose interest in feeding, grooming, and cleaning up after their new pet.
Grooming Rabbits
Bunnies and rabbits make excellent pets for someone willing to provide the necessary attention and care that a pet rabbit requires. All bunnies require daily feeding and a clean cage. Most long haired bunnies will also require daily grooming to help prevent mats from forming in their fur.
Research different types of bunnies. There are low maintainance breeds of rabbits that demand less grooming like the short-haired Rex and Netherland Dwarf. Long haired rabbits such as the French Angora or American Fuzzy Lop need more frequent brushings.
Rabbit and Bunny Personalities
Temperament is another thing to consider when purchasing a bunny. Not all breeds will become the lovable pet that's envisioned through the pet shop windown. One breed that is noted for its intelligence and friendliness, however, is the American Fuzzy Lop.
Adopt a Rabbit
Before adding that new family member, consider adopting a rabbit or bunny that is in need of a home. Especially during these tough economic times, many pets are in trouble and can really use the help. Check with a rescue group or other organization such as Petfinder.
The most important thing to consider before getting a bunny or rabbit this Easter is whether or not it will have the proper care and commitment that is needed. If there's a question about being able to devote time and attention to the pet on a daily basis, it might be better to wait.
