Pet Food Danger Gauge - How Does The Gauge Work?

Changes To The Pet Food Rating System

The pet food companies have become pretty sneaky with their use of unhealthy ingredients since the pet food recalls began back in March of 2007. I have been forced to make changes in the point system for the cat food and dog food reviews.

The old reviews used a 10 point system. The new reviews are using a 30 point system. I like the simplicity of the 10 point review but there are a number of pet foods which are scoring pretty high in that system when the products are actually dangerous to our pets.

I have written over 1,500 reviews to date and will not be able to edit all the older reviews and keep up with the new review requests. Should you find a product reviewed on the old system but you would like to know how the product ranks on the Pet Food Danger Gauge just post a comment on the site and I will update the review for you.

The Pet Food Danger Gauge is pretty easy to use. While using the Pet Food Danger Gauge you are looking for a score as close to a 30 as possible. Be sure to read my comments to learn why a pet food is rated as high or low and to find out what the pet food companies are using for ingredients.

If you would like to keep up with the products with new reviews just sign up for the AskSusanPeters fan club and Hub Pages will notify you, via your email, of my new publications.

I appreciate everyone's patients in the transition to this new system. - Susan Peters

I got confused when I found the 10 pt system changed to 30 pts. Is Pedigree Super Chew Dog Treats still rated as good?

Susan,

Could you review Wellness brand ccat food. I loved your 10 point system of reviews. The 30 point one it looks to me that there is not any healthy food out there. The only two your ranked originaly at 10 Kumpi CAt and ARtemis aren't ranking up so well now.

Also could yo c omment on the use of cranberries in catfood I lost my crf baby 12 weeks ago Dylan was 18. I am concerned about the rest of the clabber developing CRf.

Hi, Susan

First, I want to thank you oh so much for all of your hard work and generosity in sharing this info.

Your reviews have been a great help to me as I am trying to find the best possible wet and dry foods to give my 11 year-old cat (recently diagnosed with possible IBS).

I was feeding her Nutro Natural Choice, and I felt good about it seeing as it had her vet's approval and was not included in the horrific pet food recalls.

After hearing that she may have IBS, I was stunned to find that Nutro is not nearly as good as I thought it was.

I have her on Wellness now because although I was hoping she would go for the Halo brand, she turned her nose up at all of it.

I'm still not 100% satisified because of the chicken fat and "natural chicken flavor" in the food, so I have continued my research.

I came across a brand called Ziwipeak, which is not included in your ratings (I assume because it is new?). See http://www.ziwipeak.com/nzl/home.shtml

The ingredients seem to be the best out there to my "untrained" eye, but I would be very interested in your thoughts on this brand. I have contacted the company to see if they would send samples (I had read on some other web sites that they will do this).
