Dog is household pet animal. Today the American Kennel Club recognizes over 150 breeds. These breeds are divided into below groups, each with its own unique characteristics and history.

1. Herding

some of the more intelligent breeds belong to this group, including the Collie.

2 Hounds

Reliable and sturdy, hounds make great companions for adults and children alike.

3. Non-Sporting

From the popular Poodle to the stocky Bulldog, this group varies widely.

4. Sporting

The sporting group comprises some of the most popular breeds.

5 Terriers

Feisty is the word often used to describe these engaging dogs.

6. Toy Breeds

Loyal and intelligent, toy dogs make excellent pets.

7. Working

Without the right training, some working dogs can be difficult to handle.

8. A Breed Of Their Own

The world's most popular breed of dog is no breed at all.

9. Kid-Friendly Breeds

Children and dogs make perfect partners, but make sure you pick a breed that actually likes kids.

Before adding a dog or puppy to your home, please consider your current pets' feelings about dogs. If you know your current dog is aggressive toward other dogs you may want to reconsider. Or, if your cat is terrified of dogs, you will want to decide if introducing a dog to the family is fair to your cat(s). If you simply don't know what your existing animals' feelings are about dogs you can do some controlled experimentation. How does your dog act when it sees the neighbourhood dogs while on a walk? How does your cat react when a friend brings her dog over for a visit?

Like children, dogs are eager to learn. They may not want to learn what you prefer to teach, but they will learn something from every lesson you give - even when you are not trying to teach them anything.

Along with species' differences in learning style, dog owners have to contend with breed differences and individual differences. It is no accident that the top obedience dogs come from the herding and sporting groups, the conglomerations of breeds developed to work with man and obey his signals. It is also no accident that the most difficult dogs to train are the independent breeds of the hound and working groups, for they were bred to think on their own and they are easily bored by repetitive instruction.
