My cat died because of this food. She died 3 weeks ago, she was always feed Sophisticat Supreme small cans wet-cuts and gravy. 10 hours of emergency room care, they couldn't figure out what happened, they said as if all her organs just quit. She was crying and going from just starng into space to fighting off the oxygen mask and IV's. Emmy, my cat was just 5 yrs. old.

This is very bad for they knew it in Feb and some food was given to animals to test on them after sickness. the info is on www.zolaenterprises.com and getting more spooky. Look at the alerts on it

Luckily, I do not feed my pets anything on the recall list, but it is making me re-think about what I am feeding my dear ones. I have two indoor cats and a 8-month puppy. What kind of protein, fiber, etc should they be getting? Also, what ingredients should we steer clear of? I recently heard about Blue Buffalo, www.bluebuff.com, is this really superior to say, Purina?

i urge everyone to stop using ANY commercial foods, if possible. DEFINITELY stay away from grains (especially corn) and by-products. My cats started throwing up abruptly when i fed them wet meow mix. After doing some research, I switched to SHeba and Wellness (for dry) and they have been fine. But my dog, who hadn't eaten properly for years suddenly put on weight as soon as I took him off commercial foods. The pet food industry MUST be held accountable now, and in the future. The only way to get our point across is to spread the word among pet owners to read labels and NOT to use this garbage.

My Boston Terrier was very sick near the end of January - He was very letargic and would just stare into space for long periods of time. I was feeding him Iams Beef and Chicken Chunks in gravy at the time - $500 dollars in vet bills later they couldnt find anything wrong with him. About the same point in time Iams was no longer on the shel and I started feeding him Little Ceasars. He has gotten much better since then. What recourse do I have to get re-imbursed for Vet fees??

Cindi  says:

Rick my bostons have been very sick too. One of them twice now as of tonight. I feed them Nutro natural DRY lamb and rice small bites. They have some of the same undeniable symptoms, one of which is the inability to walk. We've spent 600.00 so far, but this isn't nearly the concern to me that their health is. We love them like our children. Where do I find Little Ceasars?

I have 2 yorkies, both 6 years old. About 4 years ago, I was feeding them Little Ceasars. I opened a container and found nothing but a piece of chicken skin with a small amount of gravy!! I immediately went to the internet to find out what was allowed in dog food. What a shock! Have you ever heard of the 4 D's?? Look into it! You will never feed your little guys dog food again!

My heart breaks for those who have lost pets.Me and my husband have three babies we adore, one little red persian and two himmies,They bring us so much joy.we would be lost without them. The Earth's animals deserve so much better!Only one of our cats ate whiskas, and even though she wasn't showing any symptoms we had her tested,we're lucky she's fine. All three ate Hill's prescriptoin c/d,which prompted me to read the ingredient list, which is cheap'brewers rice',by products, pork fat and chemical preservatives.I'm so ashamed I never read the label before, and have been giving them this garbage for years, just because the vet reccommended it.I think i've found a healthy food for them, thats what they're eating now,NewmansOwnOrganics makes a healthy natural cat and dog food,I'm impressed with it.It's pricy, but I agree with the person that said he would eat beans if he had to so his pets could eat better. The website also has eye-opening info about ingrediets they are allowed to put in pet food, like 4D chicken,it will truly make you sick,it did me,on the FAQ PAGE. My prayers are with all the furry babies and thier parents.

I have a 3 year old Siamese that I've fed dry Meow Mix since he was old enough to eat it. He's had problems this past year off and on vomiting, and my old 14 year old who passed away 3 months ago started vomiting off and on, too. We thought he died from old age, but now I wonder. I never thought that it could be the food they ate that would cause problems. Looks like I'll have to find an alternative. What is a good dry brand to get for cats?

So far I haven't seen any Fancy Feast recalls (and I hope it stays that way). My duo's lived on Fancy Feast and Hill's Science Diet dry (non-prescription) and seem to be okay. I'm following faithfully and I hope that the companies are held accountable for this.

Katie,

Fancy Feast has no recalls but Science Diet has had more than their share of recalls. Of course, both of these products are named in a Class Action for the number of deaths and illnesses each of the products have caused.

I wish you the best of luck!

wow you people are not aware of the things going on now I think. There was dry food on the list not just what they put up months ago. The fda in the usa does not restrict or never did pet food at all only human food which now they have recalls on that too from the bad rice and chemical sprays. It is in the news in others countries why is it not so known here. Have you not heard this on tv yet omg spooky. Be very careful still. They were passing out newletters in email from that zolaenterprises.com site since they had not had time to post it. If you folks really wrote this so recently you need to get a newletter from them. I emailed her when I heard about it. I put the url up as mine since I have no website.

Just email her off the link on that page and tell her you do not know what is going on out here yet. I would paste mine here but, I do not know if they allow it.

I purchased a 17kg. bag of ProPlanDiet food for my dog in April. I gave her one cup as indicated on the chart. There are about 4 kg. of food left in the bag, but when I went to feed her today, I discovered that the bag was full of live moths. I called the supplier, but they will not compensate me for the lost food. Why is there no warning on the package to ensure the freshness of the product over time. According to the directions and the weight of my dog, it should take about 6 months to finish the large bag, but after less than 4 months, the product has become unusable. I would like to know what you think should be done in such a case.

AskSusanPeters profile image

AskSusanPeters  says:

Hadassa,

I agree with you that if a pet food company is going to sell large quanities of pet food the container needs to be made to reseal. I also feel that if a product is going to go bad due to bugs, etc. the company should warn against that, as well. When a person opens a can of people food the product clearly states "refrigerate after opening". I don't think you have any recourse against the company but I do feel there should be a warning posted and a "zipper" provided on the bag if feeding dry food. I would suggest that you buy either smaller bags or put the unused pet food in an air-tight container after opening.

Susan

Steve Savage  says:

How about this, quit buying dog food! People food is fine for dogs, provided you avoid the obvious (onions, chocolate). Dog food is made of the lowest classes of leftover meats that are unfit for humans, and the stuff is full of carbohydrates and makes pets fat.

AskSusanPeters profile image

AskSusanPeters  says:

Steve,

You are a savy consumer! Pretty easy to put the facts together isn't it? One more caution....Don't feed packaged people food. Packaged people food isn't good for people and will kill your pets. Feel free to feed your pets what doesn't come out of McDonalds or a processed food pacage.

Can anyone please tell me who makes Petking Chicken Jerky Tid Bits? I have a friend who had 2 chihuahua puppies. One died today from a toxic bacteria and the other is now showing the same signs. These are manfutured in China but I have been unable to findout by which company. These were purchased at a Dollar type store in GA. I am seeing were there have been problems with other chicken jerky treats from China but have not seen this brand. Thank you for any help.

Celeste,

I have tried researching this product and can not find the producer. With so many recalls and the death you have reported, I wouldn't give this product as a snack.

Susan

Celeste  says:

Susan,

I talked to the owner of Petking in the USA this afternoon. He refused to name the manufacturer of the Chicken Jerky Tid-Bits. He did say that they come from China and are made by one of the largest manufactures of Chicken Jerky in China and repeatedly stated that they had had NO recalls. He stated that he has had NO complaints on this product. I explained that I was not blaming this product but trying to gather information. He suggested that possibly the puppies had picked up something from the outside or in the house, and I explained that these puppyies have a playpen that was designed for them in the house as they are to small to be able to run free (scared of stepping on one of them) and that they had NEVER been outside (potty pad training). So the possibility of them getting into something that they shouldn't have is not there. We did go by the store where the treats were purchased from and told the owner of the store about this and he immediately pulled the product from his shelf and said that it would not be sold until we have the results back. This was the first time he had ordered this product and it had just come in last week. He was also picking up the telephone to call the supplier as we were leaving. He is very upset that there is a possibilty of a product that he sells having done this.

Our vet did save the stomach contents and this will be sent to the lab as well as all food and treats that they have been exposed to. The second puppy was started on meds last night and had her blood work done today. When and if we have anything solid as evidence of what has caused this I will be happy to post those results.

Thank You, for taking the time to see if you could find the manufacturer. If I do find out who they are I will post this info immediately.

Thanks Again,

Celeste

Celeste,

Thank you for helping to inform the public. The recall is not a forced recall so if this pet food (treat) producer doesn't want to pull their products no one out there is making them. Wal Mart just pulled the stuff, put a new UPC code and returned the tainted products to the shelves.

Does anyone know what species of Tuna is in 9 Lives canned Cat Tuna? Does anyone know where 9 Lives gets their Tuna? If anyone knows,I would appreciate knowing. Theres a site called Oceans Alive that lists safe fish for humans and light tuna seems to be the best-----cant imagine it would be used in 9 Lives. I use this food infrequently but still want to know. Also I bought a dry cat food at Pet Smart. Authority Adult Sensitive Solutions Turkey based food. It has Turkey,Turkey Meal,Brewers Rice,Oatmeal,Salmon Meal,Nat. Flavor(?),Beet Pulp, Dried egg product, rice flour, animal fat & canola oil. Then the vitamins. Is this food ok? Thx?

River,

The reviews I've done on Authority look to be pretty good. From what you have listed as ingredients makes me question why Authority has had to add "Natural Flavor" (made from what?) " Dried egg "product" (whatever that is) and enticed the cats to eat this stuff by adding animal fat. But the overall ingredients look good and seem to be a far better option to so many other brands.

I still think of all the poor animals and families that suffered so much thru the recalls.

I have 3 dogs and 2 cats...one cat at the time the recalls came out. All of my dogs were affected by the recall. They we're eating IAMS dryfood Senoir and Adult Maint. Dog foods...the cat was eating IAMS dryfood. I switched to Royal Canin/Sensible Choice Chicken Adult/Senoir Dry kibble.-( a food i have used on my dogs previously to be safe...which wasn't on the recall list at the time and for the cat switched to royal canin special 33 ( never recalled!) a teriffic food.

...Two weeks later the food i switched to for the dogs..was put on the recall list.

1300$ later (and i think the vet was very fair on cost- seemed low for the care my pets recieved). One overnight for 5 days, one overnight for 3 days etc. Shortly after the switch all my dogs showed signs of lethargy even our 100lb shepherd wasnt doing well. My lil shih-ztu was over night the longest out of the 3 at 15 yrs old. THEY ALL SURVIVED...and my cat wasnt affected a bit. ROYAL CANIN paid my vet bills in full..little runaround about it...they were great. They took 100% responsibility for my vet bills. They also have assured me this will never happen again with their food. Ingredience are tested before during and after production. All my dogs are on Breed Specific foods by royal canin mixed with science diet ID wet food.. and doing very very well 7 months after the poisioning. (poision in our case was rice protein).

May this never ever happen again.

jgs,

Be careful with the Science Diet, which has a history of recalls as well. The Science Diet ID has rated lower than OL'Roy in the pet food reviews. Hope you aren't paying much for the ID formula.

I'm glad to hear that Royal Canin took responsibilty for their actions. Did they tell you how long it will be before we see changes in their pet foods? Please keep me advised when these changes occur.

Thanks,

The Eagle Pack I reviewed did not have corn in it. Which type of Eagle Pack did you find corn in?

Innova has a class action filed against it in late January due to false advertising. The list of ingredients for Innova is false. Testing has shown that Innova ingredients are substandard and are deemed "not fit for human consumption".

Orijen Large Breed Puppy Formula Dry Dog Food

I don't like the use of "natural flavor" but the rest doesn't look too bad. I'll do a full review later.

ZiwiPeak Daily-Dog Cuisine Lamb Real Meat Dog FoodThe ranch-raised lamb used in ZiwiPeak 'Treats' and 'Cuisine' is a pure source of high quality protein and fats. Lamb provides these essential proteins and fats that pets need in their diet for muscle and brain function. Lamb is also a relatively new and substantially different meat source and as such, has wide appeal as an allergen free product if your pet has health problems in this area.

Ingredients:Lamb - Meat, Liver, Tripe, Heart & Kidney, Chickory Syrup, Green-lipped and Blue Mussel, Hoki Fish Oil, Lecithin, Kelp, Vitamins & Minerals, Mixed Tocopherals and Parsley.

Will add organic carrots and string beans when her stomach is better. Do I have to add a vitamin and mineral supplement and if so which one does anyone feel is safe?

Sue,

Potato and rice are just fillers. Use these if you need to thicken the mix but they do nothing for your pet. I have been using people vitamins for my dog. May not be the best choice but I don't feel it could be any worse than what is on the market for our pets. I make sure the vits. are color free and nothing added (flavor, etc). Try some pumpkin in the pet food... settles the tummy and is good for them, too.

Susan-We buried our beautiful girl on 8-30-08 and are still perplexed at what happened. She had all the symptoms of the toxicity resulting from the dog food recall. She had one bowl of Hi-Tek Rations Hi-Performance dog food. I am wondering if anyone else has had problems with this brand? She was hospitalized for 5 days, but her kidneys were not recovering. We are waiting for lab results on the kidneys so we can put this tragic and senseless loss to rest. Our vet has determined her urinalysis is not consistent with anti-freeze poisoning, although her symptoms mimic that. I am outraged that this recall could still be affecting our pets today. It's a heartbreaking situation.
