Have you purcased pet food from these companies? If you have, you may join in the class action, too. Were you "duped" by these companies?
Words of caution:
We've all had pets fall sick or die during the pet food recalls of 2007. What needs to be done is alert the public that even though the recalls have ended the illnesses and deaths have not?
Corn, Wheat, and Soy are toxic to cats and dogs. These three grains will kill our meat eating pets. You wouldn't feed a small bowl of antifreeze to your pet, would you? Feeding these three grains isn't as fast acting as antifreeze but will cause fever, ear aches and infections, bad breath and dental disease, bloating and edema, itching and dry skin, tumors and growths, kidney and liver inflamation, heart conditions, blindness, and death.
Spead the word to the public and let the pet owners know that even though the pet food recalls of 2007 have ended the misery and killings have not!
I am so sorry for your loss,
Susan Peters
Can You Sleep After Reading This?
Comment by Amanda
I had a cat named Teddy Bear. I had to have him put to sleep about three weeks ago. He was 28lbs in November and lost a lot of weight in about 4 weeks time the food I was feeding him was Iams canned cat food some times 9 lives. I took him to the vet they told me it could be a number of thing's. They tested him for worms, thighwored they checked him for AIDS and lukemia all came out ok. I didn't have the money for the kidney or liver test I bearly had the money for the other test he had done. So we took a different road they gave me some cat food called AD cat food. It was to help him gaine wight. I was having to force feed him at first, but then he started doin' better so I took him off of the AD and like an idot put him back on the Imas. Was not long after that he got sick again two weeks later had to have him put to sleep that was about three week ago today. I have had a few cats in my life but none like my Teddy Bear... He would light up when I walked in a room. I would pick him up and would wrap his paws around my neck and squezz tight has if he were giving me a big hug then would rub his head on my face I love him sooo much and I know he loved me. It took everything I had to make the phone call about having him put down. The vet told me that it would be what's best for Teddy. I am calling the vet tomorrow I now have a lot more question. Something needs to be done. These animals are more then just our pets they are our family. I hope that all the animals that are sick get better soon and all the people that loat their pets this this my heart gose out to you God Bless.

We Demand Satisfaction!
So many people have been affected by the Pet Food Recall and so many pets have been affected by the junk, companies use in their pet foods.
When a consumer purchases a bag or can of pet food we should be able to trust the name of the producer. We should not have to dig through the list of ingredients hoping too figure out if what the company uses in the food is poison to our little friends.
Pet food can't be trusted just by the name of the product, the name of the pet food maker, or where the product is purchased (the vet's office or high end pet supply company).
This recall has shown us that the SAME stuff goes in some off-brand name pet food and the high dollar stuff as well.
Our pets are meat eaters yet 75% of most pet foods are made up of grains. It is the grains in these foods which caused the recall. Pet Food Producers don't plan to REMOVE the grains...just change suppliers for a less Toxic run of the same junk.
I feel there should be something done to make these companies clean up their products!
I have thousands of comments and emails from pet owners (parents) whom have lost "Abby", "Baby", "Bruiser","Max" and lots of "Buddy" named pets. I've spent hours reading the remarks from my readers and going to bed with tears on my pillow because of what these people and pets have been through. It hurts! Why have the pet food producers done this to me? Why have the pet food makers done this to all the people and their pets who read my articles???
I want to do SOMETHING! I am not sure WHAT I will do...but, I WILL do something.
If YOU want to do "something" too. Send to me your name, address, and phone number to my email at "asksusanpeters@hotmail.com" . Please do NOT post your private information on the comments section of my articles. When, my voice, OUR voices (signatures) are loud enough, I'll let the people know!
Let's do SOMETHING.
Thank you,
Susan Peters

if you want to give your pet good food make your own do not trust any food that you buy in a can .i make all my food for my dog it may take a litte time but its worth it .your pet is a member of your family and you want the best for your pet big buisness is not going to give a dam about your pet they are in it to make money ,they can dress up the cans to look safe and cute but most of them have meat by products and god know what that means.
The one and only time that I fed my cat Nutra-Max, it made him sick. I feed my cats Whiskas, 9-Lives, Fancy Feast & Friskies. So far, no problems. But, I am still worried. I am very tempted to just feed them cooked hamburger or chicken until all of this is straightened out.
My poor dog maggie is in kidney failure due to eating this food. I think that menu foods should help people with their vet bills. This is an expensive mess and to watch these animals suffer is even worse.
I have 12 dogs and out of my 12 dogs I feed 1 healthy senior dog (Candy) 13 years of age the Iams product for 4 days. I have never tried this product before and was looking for something special to add to her food as a treat. Shortly after trying the Adult Iams foil pouch she became severely ill. Febuary 20th. 2007 I raced her to the Vet twice in one day and was sure she was going to die. We did x-rays and test but could not pin point what was wrong and treated her for the sever vomiting. She would not eat could not stop vomiting and constantly drank water and urinated. When she would stand she swayed and hung her head. She also dug at the floor in a bizarre behavior and cry uncontrollable, something I have never witnessed in any of my dogs. I guess we were fortunate because after a week of meds and prescription foods we were able to nurse her back to health. I am positive it was the food because as I stated before she was the only one out of 12 that ate the food and was affected.
My cat died about 3 weeks ago. I've always fed her both dry and a can or packet a day. I used to stick to fancy feast, but special kitty was so much cheaper and she liked it. So for the past 4 months, she had been eating a packet a day. Then she quit eating, slept alot, I just thought she didn't feel well. After a few more days, she'd stumble when she walked, lost a lot of weight. I took her to the pet hospital and after $400 , they said they'd have to do more tests. I didn't have another $250 for them to test her blood, so I took her home. 3 days later she died. Now that I know why she died, I'm pissed. Do I contact the makers of special kitty for reimbursements? I feed my dog dry food and also alpo canned. It's not on the recall list, but I'm gonna play it safe and just feed him dry from now on...
My 5 year old doberman is in the hospital with kidney failure... he was admitted on March 10th. We have consistently feed him NUTRO ULTRA DRY DOG FOOD. PLEASE do not feed your pets any of the food wet or dry - until they can figure out what the problem is for sure. It may be too late for my baby, the doctor thinks his kidney's may be too badly damaged but we are hoping and praying for a miracle. He is our child and can't imagine life without him. We have already spent almost $5,000.00 and he still may not make it. Someone is going to pay for this!
My dog Pokey became ill with all the signs of vomiting and so thirsty and more vomiting she was so weak she couldnt even walk. This was an aweful suffering as her sad big brown eyes stare at mama for help. The vet had given her some medication it worked for a day but that was it. The vet did a blood test and said it was the highest count ever for kidney failure. My poor dog suffered for over a week and we couldnt pray enough for her pain to stop. This makes me sick to think that we were the ones feeding our dog the death wish. I just found out about the recall on March 19, 07. I dont know what OL Roy and Wal Mart are going to do to make this right. No other dog could take the place of my Pokey, she was one of the children. I am just discouraged as my heart aches for my dog. This should have never been allowed to happen.

I lost my dog on saturday of kidney failure. SHe was a healthy 8 yr old papillion. She ate Purina one dry dog food. Is this a coincidence, I am not so sure. IT was horrible and came on so sudden. My other dog ate the same food and seems to be okay, however she is much larger. I have spent almost 3 thousand dollars in 3 days and I have no answers. I emptied my savings account trying to save her. I have tried to contact purina for days and it is busy. Has anyone else heard of a similar case recently with dry food? Also, she was eating the food for quite some time, are the symptoms sudden after one bowl or does it take time with the cases reported?

Ellen I too lost a wonderful, heatly, active 12 year old dog on March 9,2007. She too was swaying when she tried to stand and hanging her head down and crying constantly till she started having seizures and died. Below is my post to the AOL message board which is very helpful.
My 12 year old dog died very suddenly March 9, 2007. She was a healthy, active dog that acted half her age. I normally fed her a combination of dry food and ALPO "filet mignon" from Stater Brothers Grocery. But for 3 days, 5 days before she died, I had fed her ALPO "cuts in gravey" which I bought at a "Dollar Store". After feeding her the three cans(1 per night) I started noticing that her breath smelled really bad(something we had never had a problem with before) so I went back to the ALPO "filet mignon".
Two days later, about 11pm on a friday nite, I was awakened from sleep by her moaning. She was having diarrhea and trouble standing up. About 30-40 minutes later she starting having seizures and died.
I went to sleep and my dog seemed fine, I woke up and my dog was dead in less than 1 hour. I could not understand what had happened. A week later all these recalls started. Now I'm scared to feed my cats anything, afraid they will die too.
I too believe that more brands and types of pet food than are on the recall lists maybe causing pet deaths. I have seen other posts on this and other sites that mention the "filet mignon" type food, ALPO "cuts in gravey" and symptoms of bad breath.
I am just heartbroken at the loss of our family pet which we had for 12 years. I wish the company had let the public know sooner.
I had a healthy German Shepard until I bought and fed her OL` ROY DRY Dog food. Now she`s very sick and under a vets care.I thought that dry food was ok?
Where can we get info on this????She`s our baby!!
My dog never ate "wet" dog food. 2 weeks ago I had to take her to the vet because she stopped eating. The vet did blood tests and said her results were "off the charts". She didn't show any signs of problems until she stopped eating. Even though she was 14 she was very healthy until 2 weeks ago. She died Monday March 19, 2007. The vet put her on I V fluids for 2 days but that didnt help. I just want to know did I poison my dog with tainted "DRY" dog food? I can't tell you how much I miss that dog!
My dog Tobias had to be put to sleep February 12, 2007. He was fed Nutro Ultra and developed all the symptoms I am now hearing about. It started with acute vomiting and when I took him to the vet we found he was in severe renal failure. After all the diagnostics I was told there was nothing that could be done. I have a $1400 vet bill and still lost my dog. I think these manufacturers should be held responsible and should be accountable for these huge vet bills. I would have done anything to save him and at the time I had no idea it could have been the food I was giving him. I have changed to feeding my other dog and cats Merrick foods but I am considering making my own. Does anyone know of any recipes or sites pertaining to this.
I hope you can do something that will make these companies accountable.
i am so very sorry for the losses of these pets (tears) i have 4 dogs and i have been feeding them that poison for god knows how long. i put Iam's cuts and gravy over there Iam's dry every day i still have the exsact lot #'s in my cabinet. i had all 4 of my girls to the vet yesterday for blood and urine test thank the Lord every thing seems to be fine and the last time they ate that poison food was last friday night. there test came back good it cost me $339.00 i dont even care about the money i just want all this to stop and the animals to be ok. there should be a emergency fund for the sick animals now before any more die. again my heart is breaking for the people that lost there babies and the animals that are and have suffered due to this ...lots of love and God bless you all....
one more thing i would like to add untill this is settled my girls are eating hamburg and rice for meals apples/carrots/jerky chicken strips for snacks and a vitimin suppliment and my cats are eating tuna fish. i know it will get exspensive but what else can we realy do there are sites that have how to's on home made dog foods and treats...again God bless you all....
I just read your article, while searching for information on how to "get even" with these murderers who are killing our pets... no, our CHILDREN, with their poison pet foods. I have a 16 year old cat named Winston, who has been the picture of health right up to one month ago. I have blood tests from 5 months ago that were totally normal. Last month, he started to show sure signs of sudden sickness. He stopped bathing himself, acted lethargic and was drinking water every 20 minutes. I was thinking he was just suddenly showing his age... didn't think much of the change until he started to smell bad and started to drool. On March 17th, he stopped eating. A friend told me about the food recall and when I check the list online, I saw that I had been feeding him one of the listed foods EVERY day for the last 3 years. Certainly, the last three months when the food was tainted. I checked the rest of the food in my pantry and it was ALL dated with the recalled dates. I decided it was time for a vet visit. The next day Winston was at the vet and I was told he had mouth sores possible due to kidney disease. Blood tests & $200.00, confirmed he was in renal failure. The vet told me that my only recourse was to put him on intravenous fluids for two days for another whopping $1200.00. I'm a bookkeeper. It takes me three weeks to earn $1200. I had to pack up my son in his box and take him home. If I could be SURE that Menu Foods would reimburse me that $1200.00 PLUS so much more that it will cost me to get the fluids, medication, more blood tests, special renal diet foods... I would do it. But I'm looking at thousands of dollars and my baby still may die in weeks. I hand-raised Winston from birth with a bottle. I found him in a trash can behind a market when he was no more than 3 days old. No one can tell me this is "just a cat". This is my CHILD we're talking about. I WANT RETRIBUTION!! Please keep me on your list. PLease let me know if you hear of a mass lawsuit or something, that we can all get in on.

I am sick to my stomach, as my beloved cat is yet another victim of this horrible recall. "Baby" was a beautiful healthy calico fat girl. I hand raised her from 3 days old as her mother got hit by a car. She was bottle fed. She would suckle onmy earlobe because I was her mother! Thhe last week of Feb. she became suddenly weak and lost her appetite and weight. I noticed she could barely walk and her legs would give out from under her and drank lots of water. I rushed her to the vet and he said she was in severe renal failure. He felt it was too late even for fluids. I could not afford the tests to even conclude this and I was forced to put her down. I pet her gently as she was put to sleep. I was in such shock. I could not figure out what suddenly could have happened to her. When I first hard of this recall, I checked to see if the packets of special kitty was on the list and sure enough it was there. My heart is broken because I feel responsible. I care for several homeless pets and could not afford the proper vet care to do the extensive testing earlier. Something must be done. The company has to do something for all of the losses. I am devasted. Please add me to the list and let me know how we can ban together on this! Many voices have much power. My prayers are there for all of you who have been through this. Please check the Rainbow bridge website to post a memeorial for your beloved pet.
Well, I recently had additions to my kitty family, Kiki had 4 beautiful kittens, Stripes, Midnite, Beauty, and Angel...unfortunately in the past 2 days 3 of the four kittens passed away...and this morning Kiki and Stripes passed away...Kiki was doing fine this morning, she got up and walked into the kitchen ate some Dry Dog Food,,,funny huh...and drank some water...next thing I turned around and Kiki was twitching in the floor..too bad a vet is not opened at 6 in the morning...she was breathing deep but very slow and could not move her backend....something has to be done.....I am a single mom and do not have the money to have the test run....I know there has to be something we can do to be compensated for the pain of losing our animals....
My heart goes out to everyone here.....my 5 month kitten CiCi was a very active kitty, she was so crazy. Three weeks ago she started to not eat and lay around in very wierd places, the tub with her face in the drain. She got very weak. We took her to the vet and after $300 worth of tests we still had no answers. I told the vet it was like she got ahold of something bad, a pack of food or maybe one of the treats we gave her. He told me he thought it was possibly kidney failure. We gave her iv fluids and antiboitics and also a laxative. She ate little but we hoped. We took her back to the vet three days later and he gave her a steriod shot ($100). She perked up a little and began to eat better. I hand fed her anything she would take, chicken soup broth, roast beef, chicken. We thought she might pull thru. I kept feed her the regular cat food I've always fed them. 3/18 she started to not eat again and lay around. She drank lots of water but peed all over the floor. She died 3/21. She waited for me to get home from work, and I laid with her and kept her warm and loved until she stopped moving. I'm so angry and heartbroken. To learn the food was the killer really makes me sick, because I kept giving it to her. I hope someone does somthing soon. Because I don't want her death to mean nothing. They are only excepting 10 deaths from this in the media, but look at all of us....... What other proof do they need?? I feel so numb.........my heart is broken in two.
as i stated before my kitten jasper was affected by the food. i am so s so sorry for all your losses. jasper is still here but i am still scared til we go back to the vets next week to see how much damage was done jasper was not expected to live.. i just recieved a call back from the FDA on jasper. still have not heard back from menu foods. i need to call FDA back next week anfter tests are done. i will keep you all informed.
I feel everyones pain because my cat that was 16 years old died 3/20/07 and I was feeding him special kitty pouches for the last year. I found out yesterday about the recall and was in absolute shock that I was feeding him contaminated food. I truly want to beleive he died of old age, but now I am not so sure. I still have 2 pouches left and I would love to feed this stuff personly to who is responsible for all these undeserving deaths to our pets. My cat just shut down and died within 2 days. My heart is broken and I am angry and want answers as to how something so horrific can happen. joey77pa@msn.com
On 02-13-07 my father called me saying that my cat I have had since childhood seemed very sick and was not eating... So I promptly called the vets office to make an appt. for the following morning .. I have had this cat since the day she was born and she was my baby and I would do anything to help her.. On 02-14-07 at 8:30 am I arrived at my parents house to find my baby sabrina lying in the bath tub reaking of infection and to weak she could bairly life her head.. When I arrived at the vet they immediatly took her for blood tests and confirmed that she had renal ( kidney) failure... So I was forced to but my baby to sleep on my first valentines day that I had ever had with my fiance. The day after her death my father gave the unused Special Kitty Pouches to out neighbor who has 6 cats of her own.. 48 hours later her beloved cat spooky who she rescued as a stray was lying on the floor dead.. and she has 2 more cats being treated for renal failure now.. I cant even being to explain how horrible it is to have come to terms with you animals death finally after a month and then find out as soon as it is released that their is a nationwide cat food recall of the pouches I fed her twice a day. Finally I had an answer.. I thought it was her time but come to find out it wasen't. Due to someones carelessness my poor babygirl had to suffer horribly and be put down. How can a pet food company get away with killing peoples animals . So Far their has been no justice served for these people who gave me POISON to feed my animals.. and whats the weirdest thing about it is that my 10 yr old Siamese would not touch that wet food to save his life.. My heart is shattered and im at my wits end now.. I am so anrgy with these people who are doing this to peoples animals. They arn't just pets they are parts of our families.. MY CATS DEATH MUST BE JUSTIFIED She was my baby and I was her mommy since day 1. Words cannot explain what this has done to me and her lifelong compainion seazar who is not lost without her here.. he has become angry he does not want me to pet him or hold him or anything.. all he does is hiss at me now and run away.. This just isien't right !!!!
I just want to say "THANK YOU" to Susan Peters for maintaining the various pages on this website. There's more information here than anywhere else on the net. You were in the right place at the right time and consequently you're a real hero in a time of great tragedy. These web pages are saving animal's lives! I just wish I had known more about the pet food issues before they poisoned my cat.
I have 2 cats - I ran out of their normal food and bought "Special Kitty" Dry food just till I could get the normal food. Well - Now My one cat is so skinny you can see almost all the bones in his body. He would sit at the tub and drink for minutes on end & urinate so much it clogged up my Littermaid Mega...I had no clue what was going on. Even now, I don't see anything about the DRY food. Of course, I don't have the bag that it came in but I still have some of the food. (I dump it into a large tub to keep it). What can we do about this? I can't take the stuff back cause I don't have the bag...
My cat seems to be on the mend - He has gotten a little more friendly than he was last week (couldn't find him anywhere but getting a drink) & I am glad that the other cat was eating the dog's food.....
Being Hopeful that we get restitution for all these lost pets & praying for a miracle for all those that are sick.

HURTING IN
My baby boy (cat), Zeke, died of kidney failure on Feb. 23, 07. He has always eaten Iams (wet & dry) food. Out of the blue, he started vomiting, and seemed lethargic. I took him to the vet, and 36 hours and $1400 later, I had to put him to sleep. I am still devastated. He was only 8 and a half years old and was my baby. Zeke was such a huge presence in my life, and in my home, I still can't believe he is gone. It happened so fast.
Now, a month later, this food recall is happening. It has made me upset all over again. I have to face the fact that Menu Foods has poisoned my Zekers - and that makes me very angry. My poor boy - I love you Zeke.
My deepest sympathies to all who have lost their pets over these last few weeks to this potential food contamination. My precious little cat Willow (12 years old) died on Tuesday suffering from the same symptoms. One of the foods that I had been feeding her was Iams pouches. I know that it could be coincidence but reading so many other peoples comments that sound just like what I have been through, I find it hard to believe that it isn't connectected. Like Amanda and her cat Teddy Bear, after coming back from hospital and having to syringe feed her, when she started to look healthier and wanted to feed again, I gave her more Iams as she seemed to prefer the gravy style food to the other type. After expecting improvement as we were keeping her hydrated with saline injections, she went rapidly downhill last Monday and passed away on Tuesday. I'd have paid any amount of money to have kept her alive but I'd have paid more to have had the knowledge of the suspect food. To all of you whose pets are still ill, my wishes are with you that they all recover.

my cat ariel got sick in dec. after 888.00 later hes doing better, but i cant afford these vet bills. we all should be reimbursed ,and compensated for al,the heartache this has caused all of us, Justice should be served.
After losing two of my cats. Shilo and Shanga to a diet of canned Special Kitty. And Dry Kitty Mix. I switched to 9 Lives Daily Essenstials. The rest of my cats all 8 of them. Are doing alot better. Not drinking as much and are eating. 9 Lives has alot of vitamins in it. And even helps the immune system. Vitamins for healthy bones. Not sure if this is what is working. But they are improving.
When they get a treat I give them 9 Lives in a can. Nothing else.
I was feeding them dry food purchased at Dollar General called Kitty Mix. I wasn't sure about this food. So I stopped feeding them it. And made the switch to 9 Lives.
I called the makers of Kitty Mix. Put out by Hi-Tek Rations In Dublin, Georgia. Since this type of food was not on the recall list or the safe list. I was very concerned.
They told me it was safe. They don't even put the stuff in it that menu foods did that made the animals have kidney failure. But I am not feeding them it. Until I can be 100% sure it is safe. My cats are not cats. They think they are people. And they never go outside so they can't eat the neighbors cat food.
Just thought everyone would like to know what I found out.
I am still doing research and reading every article I can find on this real call stuff. I have a website that i posted stuff from ASCPA for anyone that wants to read it.
http://sumatran-tyger.livejournal.com I will continue to put things on there as I find them out.
In response to Leila, message #24:
My story closly resembles yours. Heck, it closely resembles everybody's! I'm still in shock. I'm responding to your post mostly because I, too, want Rags's death to count!
I am so mad I could spit nails and I am so overwelmed with grief that I could just die!!! I will do whatever I can to make these people take responsibility for killing my precious Mercedes. My furbaby Mercedes died yesterday March 21st between 3am and 5am in the morning not sure of the time because I accidently fell asleep. About 9pm the night before my 18yr old step daughter brought her to me and said I think something is wrong with her. I took one look at her and knew that something was horribly wrong!! She was acting as if she was panting (like a dog) I took her back to my room and laid with her knowing deep down she was dieing but I had no idea why! She couldn't walk or keep her balance, she drank so much water that I couldn't keep up with her needing more, had no bladder control and she was getting sick over and over again. I had to force her to take a break so every 15-20minutes I would giver her a little more water hoping it would stay down. No vets open and I was hoping and praying that I could keep her going until I could take her to her vet at 7am the next day. I tried so hard to stay awake because I wanted so much to help her go if she was going to go or help her stay alive until I could get her help!!! SHE DIED and was by herself, I was not there to help her!!!! I will never forgive myself for falling asleep. I am so full of greif and rage that I really don't know how to feel at this point!! I have never cried this long and hard in my entire 39yrs of life!!
I did not learn of the real maning of the recall until later that day when I heard about it on the news and they only mentioned food bought at Walmart or Kroger Stores. I thought well I'm safe that would not have affected Mercedes because I bought her food somewhere else. Little did I know until researching the internet and finding you all and your stories that I killed my one and only consistant wonderful thing in my life for 16yrs. Mercedes was my light when I walked in the door, she protected my at night and she just plain loved me for me!!! She had some dental problems and about 2 weeks ago I noticed she wasn't eating very well, so in the 16 years I had her she never ate wet food and guess what? I went and bought 20 pouches of Nutro Natural Choice Senior wet food thinking it would be easier for her to eat instead of Dry Nutro food and by the 10th pouch she was dead!!! There is NO doubt in my mind now that is was the cat food. I initally thought and figured she had a stroke or maybe even a heart attack and the fact that she was up in her years but 24hrs ago I would have called you a liar if you told me I killed my own furbaby!!! I AM HEART BROKEN and hope I can make it through this without going completly biserk!! THANK YOU SUSAN!!! I Thank Susan and all of you for posting and sharing your stories because it definatly has made me feel a little better knowing my story is close in alot of ways to many of yours and that I am not alone!!! I will support anything I need to do to make these people pay for what they have done!!! What if it would have been baby food that was contaminated and our babies were all getting sick and dieing!!!! Something would be done then so why not for our 4 legged Babies, they are are family too!!! PLZ include me and keep me posted!

I am feeling a great sense of loss in my family this week a family member my beloved dog cocoa passed away this week. I wasn't sure why she wasn't feeling well the day before she died unexspectedly. I purchased ol roy canned food from walmart and now she is dead. My 9 year old cried himself to sleep that evening she was
RAT POISON was found in the food...I am so grateful our cat was not affected, even though we fed her Nutro Natural wet fod. Here are some links:
Well our cat morris about three days ago starting acting really weird. Normally this is a very loving cat. Well he was being really slow and sluggish and would hardly eat. He is a big cat and usually eats like a pig! Well I feed him dry cat food and today I found him dead. I couldn't fin him the last two days but he must of been alive and suffering because I found him where I had looked a few hours earlier. I feed him dry cat food. He was perfectly fine up to this point. There is no doubt in my mind that the cat food is tainted. I think this effects alot more products then they are saying. Be carefull people. If you love your animal I wouldn't trust any food till they are all tested. What can I do? I want to sue there asses!! Sorry for the language but I am so mad.. Me and my 9 year old son loved that cat!!!
The best advice I could give affected pet owners is to join a class action suit against Menu Foods. Class action suits have been filed in the USA and Canada. Although, money can never make up for the loss of a beloved pet, owners should receive compensation for any and all vetenarian bills, as well as some compensation for the loss of their pet. It is not just the issue of the ept food as the cause. It is also an issue with respect to the timing of the recall. Apparently, Menu Foods learned about problems already sometime in December, yet did not issue a recall until mid March!!!!
Candian pet owners affected by this Menu Foods issue, feel free to contact me at:

My baby dog "Java" is sick... she is a 7 pound Yorkie and I don't know what I would do without her. I am literally sick over it. If Denny's was doing this to people wouldn't it be on the front page/channel of everything for a month? Today is March 23rd 2007 and I spoke with 4 people who had "no idea" or think it is just some pouch food. This is long from over. Share it with everyone you know!Menu Foods and the rest - I hope you burn
i just watched the news. i am soooooo mad right now. rat poison in our precious animals food and they don't know how it got there. 60,000,000 packages and nobody seen the rat poison give me a break somebody knows something and they should pay for our pets suffering. one question i want to know will this effect the off spring of the pets that do make it though this horrible injustice.
I lost my kitty target a few weeks ago. I had been feeding him the special kitty brand food from walmart. he was a great cat and should have lived several more years he was going to be 9 this july. i`m pissed off about this whole thing and would like to get some answers
My twin and I have a beautiful pomeranian/chihuahua mix. Anyone who sees her tells us what a beautiful dog she is. She has a smooth burnt orange and white coat and her fur is so soft, her tail is super cute and curly, and she has bright, big doe eyes.
She has been with us since she was born, a tiny puppy I could hold in my chubby ten-year-old hand. She liked to jump in our garbage can and bark at the knock of strangers at our door. When my sister was five minutes from being home she would start wagging her tail and perch on the same spot of carpet by the door excitedly waiting to paw at her knees and beg to get picked up. She would give us kisses on our hands and our faces... she would curl up like a soft ball of yarn between my chest and my arms as I slept.
All Murphy ever gave us was her sweet unconditional love, loyalty, and devotion. When I was distressed or sad she would lay on my lap and settle my frazzled nerves. Nothing can match her sweet, precocious personality. My sister and I grew and moved out of the house, and Murphy aged and lost many of her teeth. I went to a college dorm and Amber, being in an apartment took Murphy to live with her. Being young and a student and out on her own for the first time, it's not like either of us could really afford "fancy" dog food for Murphy but that didn't matter. Amber always spent a good portion of her grocery budget on Murphy.
I would go to her house and give her a hard time. She would have nothing in her fridge to offer me but Murphy always had a full supply of the Nutro wet dog food for her teeth and nutrition. Food is supposed to nourish the body. Murphy started to lose her appetite and energy a week ago. She lost a lot of her weight. She was still a pretty little dog with her sparkling eyes, but she got worse over a few days.
We just found out on Tuesday about the recall of the food. I took her to the vet for my sister that same day hoping it was an infection or something, but we got the results to her blood test yesterday and I just found out that we have to put a member of our family to sleep forever because her kidneys are shutting down.
Does any "mistake" at a food company justify what's happening to so many families? I personally can't believe that this could happen to innocent little animals. Can anything make that better?
I lost my cat chloe 2 weeks ago to kidney failure. I ma concerned because this happened right before the recall. The thing is I only feed her meow mix dry food, which is not on the recall list. I think it would be really strange for her to very quickly become illl and a recall to happen days later.
PEOPLE WAKE UP !!
We must contact the MEDIA !!! to set them straight on the real devistation that has befallen us. The news is saying that only 16!! pets have died. WE must get the truth out there on how many of our loved ones have crossed the Rainbow Bridge
THERE IS IS A COVERUP..... the media is trying not to tell the real truth because of political correctness...
THE TRUTH IS that the wheat was purchased from CHINA where rat poison is regularly used to deterr their rodent problem.
China has its own high rate of mortality due to food poisoning in one form or another... just google that fact.
If China uses these chemicals on food product, what do they think the wheat that they sell {to stupid westerners} would be used for?
Perhaps it was produced for NON HUMAN consumption and sold as such to the manufacturer of "pet food" [for we stupid westerners that hold their pets in high esteme...]
you see, CHINA has no regard for DOGs or CATs.
Do you know what China does to DOGs? China breeds dogs then skin them alive, drop them in boiling water to keep their flesh tender, because it is a delicacy. You know about the fur coats recently sold in US and determined to be dog fur (from the above mentioned practice) . A few years ago, it was cat fur that made it into our market , in the form or stuffed toys.
WE MUST DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS.... NOT ONLY regarding the wheat... but the fact that our government is pushing us to use companies that do not have regulations.
WHY DO WE HAVE TO GO OUT OF THIS COUNTRY for low cost WHEAT???? when the gov't is subsidizing our farmers, not to grow wheat.
.. we sell our wheat to other countries at reduced rates.
WHY are there no controls or inspections of food products that come into our country!! WE are loosing our loved ones. IT IS NOT fully MENU FOODs fault.
They perhaps may also be victums.......
THIS IS THE TIP OF THE ICEBERG
PEOPLE WAKE UP !!
In the name of GLOBALIZATION ...China sells
THEY sell CHEAP products to
GLOBALIZATION is killing us....
THIS IS A LIE !
I had my mom's dog put to sleep on Tuesday. The vet said it was kidney failure probably due to Nutro Natural Choice food we were feeding her. I stayed in the room with her when they gave the first shot to relax her, I just couldn't bear to stay for the second shot. No one, NO ONE, should have to go through what we have gone through. I want to make them pay. Then yesterday i called menufoods and told them my dogs eat nutro max chicken, rice and turkey. It is not on the recall list but they insisted I STOP FEEDING IT IMMEDIATELY. I took my dogs to the vet for blood tests, $175.00 worth, but thank God they are fine. Now I am afraid to feed them anything. I am going to make my own dog food but what about dry dog food? Nothing is safe. I need help please.
Please put me on your list. My cat is in a terrible condition (kidney failure) due to daily consumption of "Special Kitty". I only found out about the recall today, March 24! Also, two of her newborm kittens died last week- they wre born prematurely, but at the time I did not realize that this has been the cause.
I am very angry! I prey to God that my cat survives this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!!!
The vet told me that "fluids" is just a "patch", and that she is going to die from this anyway!! And that for teh rest of her life we are going to have to do "fluids" to her every day!
That ruins not only my cats life, but also messes up my child's , because i am totally unable to pay attantion to my 6 month old son, when my cat is dying!
My career is also going down the drain by the way, as I cannot at all concentrate on my work at all, and having to take time off constantly for the past 2 weeks, which is totally unacceptable.
This is extremely difficult for us...
I did the "fluids" to my cat for the first time today- my cat was ready to tear me into pieces, and scratch my eyes out. Following the procedure she peed on my bed as a revenge, so that i cannot even sleep there now. Probably tomorrow she will pee in the baby's bed....if at all i will be able to stick the needle into her again.
Taking care of my cat is my responsibility. It is terribly difficult and is going to ruin my lifeplans due to the "Menu foods" incident.... But all i can do is to try my best.
I do not believe that I should have the right to put someone down- I am not God.
But I do feel very guilty now for probably having killed my cat by feeding her that food, I think people should not keep pets at home, but just let them run in the wild, because all we do is damage to them!!!! I will never get pets again.
"Special kitty" is probably just another example that people don't really think animals are a big deal enough to run check on the food sold in stores.... or maybe anyone for that matter- who guarantees there will be no rat poison in my son's jar of "chiken and chiken gravy" next time i feed him?
I think i am going to cook my own food for everyone from now on...
I honestlty believe that this issue has been going on much longer than then Menu Foods is admitting to. Last summer, my Yorkshire terriers were both sick on and off. They both were fed Ole Roy foil packets twice a day, every day. My little female, Tori, was ill for three days. It seemed almost that her illness would come and go during that period. . .She would throw up after each meal and drink a lot of water. When I would try to offer her some of her dog food, she would sniff it, look up at me and back away from it. I tried feeding her some lean meats and carrots. Within a day or so, her health began to get better. As soon as Tori was well again, my male Yorkie, Toto came down with what seemed to be the same illness. He started having diarrhea. Later in the afternoon, he was feeling a bit better. I fed him his regular dinner (Ole Roy foil packets), around 5:00 pm. By 6:30 he had become EXTREMELY ill. His health declined at a rapid rate, as he threw up over and over again. He threw up so hard that he actually busted a blood vessel in his eye! The poor little guy could not seem to get enough to drink. He kept drinking water and eventually, he collapsed in the floor and threw up while he was lying down. In the meantime, I had called our vet and left a message. Our vet does not have an emergency care service so we didn't think that our little "Toto" could be seen until the following morning. We tried to make him as comfortable as possible in the meantime. At around 12:30 a.m., he went from bad to worse. He was completely lethargic. I picked him up off of the floor, bloody water RUSHED out of his rectum and he lay in my arms lifeless. I thought I had lost him, and I handed him to my husband. He held him for a bit and said, "He's still breathing". We found an emergency vet office online that was about an hour away. We took him there and they put him on IVs and did a lot of testing. He was in kidney failure. The vet had no idea what caused his condition. He said that some Yorkies are very sensitive to "rich" foods. I explained to him that I did not feed my dogs table scraps and I only feed them carrots and other healthy tidbits as treats. He also said that he didn't think my dog's illnesses were related. . .I beg to differ. I think my dogs were both very ill from eating this tainted dog food. I put them on Science Diet per my doctor's advice and they were both fine for the next month or so. Since then, I had started feeding them Ole Roy from time to time when I would run out of Science Diet. Over the past few months, both of my dogs have been ill three times. The most recent being my female. She was sick two weeks ago for several days. Each time that they were sick, they were eating Ole Roy dog food. Looking back on this now, it all makes sense to me and I believe that this issue effects a much larger time period then they are admitting to right now. I am so angry. My poor little dogs have suffered. I have suffered with them and I was the one feeding them this stuff that nearly killed them both.
I think it has been going on a long time as well. My Foxy got sick maybe a year ago. She was throwing up and throwing up, she had bloody diarrhea. I panicked and took her to the 24 hr vet in Stockton. They could not determine what the problem was but had her on liquids for the weekend and she improved. I am so freaked out by all of this that I am starting to fix my own dog food now. But i have to use dry dog food to mix it with. I don't know what else to do, i don't trust any pet food now. Reading stories here, there are many of us feeding pets foods not on the recall list that are dying.
This is simply put: MURDER! The victims are not mere pets, but our family members! In some cases, these are our ONLY familes. Dog and cat foods must be changed. Higher standards must be met.
Comment for #51, Scanning through these postings, your's caught my attention. Did your vet offer intravenous treatments at the facility? These treatments are more costly than the at home treatments. It seems there are a lot of unknown factors at this point, but I was not willing to give up hope so easily and how insensitive of that vet to make that comment. The is no guarantee of payment by Menu Foods at this time, but I feel even if I don't get the money back, my cat's life is worth trying to save. I am by no means "rich", so I probably won't get my own lawyer, but if a class action suit comes my way, the company better believe I'll be part of it. DID YOU READ THAT MENU FOODS? and do you think I care that your company is losing $40 million because you had to take the "food" off the shelves?
My cat is currently on IV at the vet's office at the cost of $100 a day, but other vets in my area have different rates and payment plans. Maybe get some more opinions if it would give you some peace of mind...Right now, the internet and other people are my strength...good luck...deb
I haven't lost a pet in this horrible ordeal, but I just want to offer my condolences to all of you who have. I read all your posts and my heart goes out to all of you. Someone else made a good point that the media is only reporting 16 deaths which is absurd! The death toll is far greater than that. I don't trust the mainstream media outlets anymore. I try to educate myself outside of it. I also don't trust this company Menu Foods. They've been dishonest from the beginning and still don't seem to have a lot of concern for people who have lost their pets. I have a feeling many more recalls are going to be added to their lists before this is all over with.
I have three bosten terriers. My male got sick, couldn't hardly walk, wouldn't eat. He only laid around.i thought he was gonna die. My husband gave him a pen. shat .He was better next day.The next day his sister got sick.I raised her since she was born. She was the runt of the bunch,so i kept her.She would have been 18 months next week.Guess what she didn't make it. She wouldn't get up. She keep drinking and peeing on her self. I didn't have the money to take her to the vet. They both ate special kitty and ol roy food. please help me!!!!!!!!!!!
Let me tell you about my beloved ROCKY.... He was so beautiful and strong that no other name would do! I still can't beleive my champ got knocked out by his very own trusted cat food (Nutro, Natural Choice). For any of you who need to put a claim for the loss or illness directly caused by any cat foods, please visit www.progressivelaw.com to get in on a class action lawsuit.
Rocky had a really horrible experience that lasted a whole month. From constant vet visits to severe abdominal pain and internal bleeding. On January 6th 2007, on Rocky's first vet visit, my vet asked me point blank if my cat had gotten into any rat poisoning? Being that Rocky is an indoor cat, the question then seemed almost absurd to me. I assured my vet that this couldn't possibly be the case and pushed for other possibilities. My vet took x-rays and a urine sample because I had originally taken him in due to finding blood in his urine. The x-rays showed a dark mass inside him that the vet explained was blood. He gave Rocky a vitamin K shot which is used as an anti-coagulant for pets that have ingested rat poisoning just to be on the safe side. The vet, felt that this could have all been symptoms of a urinary track infection.
After taking Rocky home, things didn't get any better. I ended up taking him back to the vet four more times, each time growing less and less patient and realizing that whatever was wrong with my cat was serious and could end up killing him. I asked the vet what I should do and he suggested valium!!! I thought he must be crazy because my cat was already not moving at all. All he would do was look at me with these eyes that screamed...help me!
I ended up getting a second opinion but nothing seemed to make sense. This vet felt that Rocky most likely had a urinary track infection but I knew that it was something much deeper because the blood was not coming from his bladder but from his kidneys. Rocky went home and just sat in his litter box for another two days. I was forcing him to drink water with a syringe and feeding him yogurt. I was a mess! I missed work on one occasion because I didn't want him to die while I was at work.
The following morning, I ended up taking him back to the hospital for a final ray of hope. The doctor called me around 10am to let me know that Rocky's vitals seemed to improve but that a cathater had to be placed into his bladder to drain the blood. I finally felt a sense of relief.
Two hours later I would get a call at work that Rocky had taken a turn for the worse! The vet could not explain why Rocky was losing so much blood and told me that he would need a blood transfusion immeadiately to keep him alive. While the staff was getting Rocky ready to be transported, his heart gave out and the doctor miraculasly revived him. I was a complete mess and was ushered into a room, thinking that my only option now would be to put him down. I felt so sick and shocked. When I asked my vet what he thought, he said that he still felt Rocky had a chance! I couldn't believe what he was telling me...my cat just died and came back to life and he still felt he had a chance!!! I couldn't give up on him now, we've come too far.
So there I was, driving like a mad woman with Rocky in the carpool lane. I knew that any cop who would pull me over would take one look at me and let me go. I was talking to him the whole time and hardly remember lever looking straight ahead at the road. I felt so scared and in a daze. 15 minutes into the drive I remember Rocky looking right at me with his big beautiful eyes and telling me goodbye. What would follow next would haunt me for the rest of my life... Rocky was choking and fighting to take his last breaths. I was crying, yelling and saying, Please God..no. But, by the time I got from the carpool lane all the way to the emergency lane, Rocky had passed away. He died exactly one month after his first vet visit on February 6th 2007. My baby was gone from this life forever and all because his food was allowed to make the shelves. His last days on this earth were a constant battle and an emotional roller coaster to all that loved him. He will be missed and there will be hell to pay for this cruel injustice.
May God bless all of you who have suffered in one way or another. Do not let this go unanswered, speak up and take action so that we can all finally have closure and begin to heal.
I love you Rocky and will miss you always.

Just a quick opionion, seems to me Menu Foods is willing to pay us some money, shut us up about the situation, move on and continue business as usual. NOT GOOD ENOUGH. I spend hours on the computer looking for answers. I'm not satisfied with the report of what happened. I want to know how this "COULD HAVE" HAPPENED. Someone screwed up, WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, HOW, WHY? Unfortunately, like many things in life, I took for granted...my pet's food was safe. Something needs to change. If anyone can tell me where I can find information on the plants that manufacture these types of foods, I would appreciate some websites. I don't want to put MENU FOODS out of business, they're going to have to pay our medical bills, right? BUT something needs to change.
I want as much information i can find for the sake of my Lab Bailey and my vet bills

e all need a recourse
please post who we could contact

OUR BEST FRIEND OF 7 YEARS, "PATCH" WAS PUT TO SLEEP DECEMBER 26, 2007, DUE TO RENAL FAILURE, WHICH I NOW DISCOVERED WAS A RESULT OF THE FOOD WE FED HER (SPECIAL KITTY FROM WALMART IN MIDDLE TENNESSEE). SHE WAS HEALTHY AS A HORSE BEFORE THAT. WE ONLY BOUGHT THE FOOD TO GIVE THE CATS AN EARLY CHRISTMAS TREAT. AND THE DAY AFTER CHRISTMAS WE HAD TO PUT HER DOWN. WE HAVE THREE CATS AND SHE WAS THE ONLY ONE THAT WOULD EAT IT. WHAT A CHRISTMAS TREAT WE GAVE HER. THIS STINKS! I FEEL TERRIBLE!
SHARYL BARNESSHELBYVILLE, TNOn Feb 25th We bought a 2 year old pom. She only weights 3 pounds. We went to petsmart and got her nutro cuts and gravy food. That night when it was time for bed I put her in her kennel and feed her a pack of the nutro. She ate about half of it. I took the food out and put it down for my cat to eat the cat would not touch it. He will eat anything so when he did not touch it I started wondering what was wrong with him. So I got the food and put it in the trash. The next morning when we got up my pom had vomited in her kennel. I told my husband what had happend and we both agreed that it must have been the food that mad her sick but did not know why and said we would not feed her anymore of it. After finding out about the recall I am so glad we did not feed her anymore. And now we lisen to the cat if he wont eat something none of the animals get it. I am so upset over the lose of all these babies. And someone needs to be held accontable for all of this. I lost one of my cats to a heart condition not to long ago so I know the pain people are feeling for there animals. So far my pom is doing ok since she only ate the half of pack of food but it makes me wonder if something will come up in the future with her health because of what she did eat of it.
Jan in SC
To be safe, you may want to take the Pom for a blood test. I am sure she is fine, but it would ease your mind. I have started feeding my dogs only homemade dog food. Wish I knew how to do it right tho, not sure how much to give them but i am too freaked out by all of this. I already had to put one dog to sleep with kidney failure, can't do that again. They need to pay bigtime.
Has anyone started a class action suit yet? I was contacted by an attorney and am alittle afraid to sign the contract. Would love some advise please from anyone who already has an attorney.
In Decemeber my Shihtzu came down with kidney failure due to feeding canned Nutro food. Luckily she's recovered somewhat. But who knows what damage was done.
Then my Persian, starting urinating around the clock. I believe due to the food.
Then two weeks ago, after feeding my cats the only food I had in house, Ol Roy, my 17 year old cat started vomiting, disoriented, etc, listless.
After a week of taking him to the vet and $500. later, he passed away in a sad, violent way, he gasped for his breath then died suddenly.
I blame the food in both cases. I still have some of it and packaging around. I bout since demeber and fed my cats and dogs, Eukanuma, Ol Roy, Nutro, Iams, Hills , Friskies pouches.
I would like to join the class action suit, but have been unable to find information on where to do this. If anyone can help, I would so appreciate it.
I faxed the company and got no response, and I cann't even use their website.

Please help!Thanks,

http://www.audetlaw.com/index.html are the ones i have been talking to about getting in on the suit. a man from nutroproducts has also contacted me. i am sure i will get paid back for the vet bills but am wondering if i should take it further. my mom's dog was put to sleep, i was with her for most of the procedure, it was not a pretty site and i had to leave. i wish someone would tell me what to do, i think they should be held responsible for more than just paying the vet bills. Tootie is dead because she trusted us enough to feed her and take care of her. Trust...that is a joke.
On January 6th, 2007 I lost my sweet golden retriever of only seven. He was in excellent physical condition. In December, I decided to switch to a "high end" Purina dog food. Landon danced around his food bowl in protest but I didn't listen to him. I didn't want to waste a full bag of dog food...I thought he was just being picky. I put chicken broth on it in hopes to entice him...it worked...he became ill, slowly. I noticed ORANGE feces and vomit in the yard. I thought that it was orange because of the dye in the food. Little did I know that this is the first sign of liver failure. His mouth (gums) became pale so I rushed him to the vet. After extensive tests the vet felt as if my dog had been poisoned..."impossible" I said..."he is always with me and not that kind of dog." After two blood transfusions and many liver boosting drugs, I was forced to put him down. $1500 later, I have no dog. THIS WAS NOT WET DOG FOOD!!!!! THIS WAS A DRY PURINA! My mom's dog (a dry Nutro eater) was showing symptoms, we switched her food and she recovered. My grandma's dog (a dry dog food eater) was vomiting and urinating blood and had an orange stool. After veterinary care and switching her food to Innova, she is recovering. I don't want this to happen to anyone else. The only common ingredient in our food is whole grain wheat or wheat flour. Dry kibble is killing too…I can put you in contact with at least 30 others who are going through what I went through. Dry kibble just takes longer to kill. Please help!!! I have contacted Cornell University to have my food tested….of course, I have not heard back. I have called the FDA a number of times. They tell me that I am not the only one complaining about dry food. What else can I do? A Purina watchdog keeps removing my threads from the AOL discussion board and places a stupid add about how wonderful Purina has been for 100 years. Please, read the AOL message boards. There are sooooooooooooo many dead pets….we don’t know how to get this dry food off the shelves. Thank you for listening to me.Laura

ok so now they are saying a manufacturer of dry food may have used the product that is killing the animals, but they will not tell us who that manufacturer is. so we may be still feeding our pets a deadly product?
check dry food for wheat gluten. don't feed your pets if it is in there.
Hello I have been reading all of the coments and they all are about the same as mine. I had a mixed 15 year old pretty healthy dog his name was Beau. He could not see very good and could not hear anything. But he was healthy. Two weeks ago he got real sick. This was before the recall was on the news. I started feeding him canned food because it was easier for him to eat it because his teeth where just as old as he was. My daughter feeds him and he was not acting good. I told my daughter that the food was not setting with him to just put a half a can in his dry food and maybe he would do better. He has always eaten dry food I JUST THOUGHT THAT IT WAS THE CHANGE. After about a week I told her to stop feeding it to him alltogether but it was to late. I took him into the vet and did no testing because I thought it was just his time. I said to my Vet one week he was fine and the next he is doing so bad could he have had a stroke. The doctor said that dogs usually dont have strokes. I told him that he has been throwing up and not eating he could not stand up anymore and if he did it was like he had no balance. He would walk a few steps and fall over. HE SAID TO ME IT REALLY SOUND LIKE HE IS HAVING KINDEY FAILURE. He had been drinking water like he had never before. The dog food that I feed him is not on the list. I keep waiting for it to be in all of the food. I have three cats fatso, Crybaby and Tiger and also a little dog Chico. I put my dog down on Fri and Sat or Sun is when the recall came out in the news. I called the vet on Monday to tell them what I think happened. I dont want anything from the company I am just sad and VERY MAD they let something like this happen. Nothing will bring Beau back. I am sure that they are gonna find that it is many more foods then what they think. I was watching the news today and they added dry food. I am missing my little Beau thank you for reading. Sue
My cat Samantha who was only 12 died in January of this year. She had been perfectly fine, full of energy and into everything. All of a sudden one day she just started sitting by the water bowl. She had been throwing up occasionally, then she stopped eating, and would just sit by the water bowl with hardly enough energy to get up. It was so sad watching my baby that I had raised since she was 4 weeks old just sitting there looking so lethargic. She had lost half her body weight when she passed away. The same thing happened to my mom's two healthy cats. I still have a kitten who is 9 months old and just don't know what to feed him anymore. I've gotten so I don't trust any food made for cats, so I'm trying different people foods as well as baby food. I do so hope this wakes up the industry and stricter regulations are enforced!
My Dog Jenna died on 3/4/2007. She was fed IAMS WEIGHT CONTROL DRY DOG FOOD as well as IAMS GRAVY. Her symptoms came on suddely and consisted of loss of appetite, vomiting, increased water intake, druelling, shallow breathing, fever, and lethargia. The results from the vet showed she was anemic, her iron level was at 15% @ 10% she would need a blood transfusion, dehydrated, running a fever of 104, and her liver was enlarged. She started showing symptoms on Frday 3/2/2007 and died Sunday 3/4/2007 at 2:30 a.m. She was not just a pet she was my BABY! This is an ongoing grieving process for me, my husband, and our 2 boys. We had just purchased Jenna a new bag of food not long before she became ill. I almost gave the left over DRY food to a co-worker for her dog because i didn't want to see it go to waste. I ended up throwing it out the day before i heard about the recall which they were saying was only on the wet food. Please pass this message on to everyone you know who has a pet. So many pets have died from consuming the DRY food and comsumers are not being told!!!
I lost my beloved, Sam (aka MR. Snuggles) on Jan. 1 2007. He was diagnosed with the beginning stages of renal failure. He used to throw up, and drink a lot of water. My sister-in-law used to tell me that I should feed him IAMS. Now I never did do that...but then one day I took her advice. I started to notice in Nov. he started to become ill. He was an older cat (almost 16), but never was sick before. I did bring him into the vet and they diagnosed him with the beginning stages of renal failure and they noticed something on his lungs. They said they couldn't do a biopsy becaue of his age. I really want to believe that he died of old age (or cancer and they suspected, but couldn't prove). They did prove he had problems with his kidney's (which he never had before I started feeding him IAMS). Anyway, I lost my baby in Jan. and it was hard. I don't know if it was because of that poision or if it was just from old age. He drank so much water constantly. He used to throw up too. I have his ashes here. I really loved Mr. Snuggles. He was, and will always be a great friend.
I lost my beloved bassett hound, Sammi, on Jan. 18th. She regularly ate Alpo Prime Cuts and dry dog food, mixed. She started vomiting and having bloody diahrrea on the weekend, drinking lots of water. I gave her rice and boiled chicken, took her to the vet for a checkup, and she seemed to rally. But by Tuesday, she couldn't walk and was breathing heavily, crying and whimpering. She went to the hospital, they thought she had pancreatitis, because her X-ray showed inflammation in her abdomen. By Thursday, she was gone. Our hearts are broken, and we'll never be the same. Last week, our bassett puppy, had the same symptoms. We immediately went to the hospital, where he was given IV fluids, antibiotics, etc. He's fine now, but we'll NEVER feed him dog food again. It's rice, vegetables, and chicken for him! Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone who has lost their beloved babies.

After reading all these posts. I can't help but wonder if "Gypsy" MY full blooded black Lab was poisoned by eating Alpo Prime Cuts. As she was sick. We thought when she kept getting out of the pen numerous times she had gotten ahold of something. But looking back. It had to be the dog food. Gypsy didn't deserve this.
When we got her she was a victim of abuse and neglect. She cowarded into a corner. She was scared of everything even a leash. If we went into the pen. She went to a corner scared. We finally got her to trust us. And she started playing and being friendly after 5 months of working with her. Then after a year of really enjoying Gypsy in her new state she was gone. Still in the puppy stages of life. Even though she was full grown. And not quite two years old.
She has so much energy. Until we found her dead in the yard.
MENU FOODS I HOPE YOU GO OUT OF BUSINESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHO CARES IF YOU LOSE MONEY. I KNOW I DON'T.
My other dog which is part chow and terrier Chi-Chi, just sniffs at the food and refuses to eat it. HUMMM? I am taking her off Alpo. But what is safe? I can't let my dog starve.
Any suggestions what is safe to feed my dog?
My dog died in February. I will never know if her death was caused by the pet food contamination. I will never buy any form of pet food. My pets will eat people food in the future. I always believed that they should eat meat. I always supplemented their diets with regular meat anyway. I think veterinarines are paid to push the junkie pet products on their patients.
Why don't we all get together and ban all dog food and put them out of business. Maybe then they will change their ways of making our animals food. I am serious. Just stop buying it and make your own for 6 months or so. Then see what happens. Let's not take this laying down people. Anyone interested please email me debfromlodi@yahoo.com
Has anyone experienced their beloved cat getting sick from PurinaOne adult chicken formula DRY? My sweetheart Katie began vomiting 2 weeks ago and overnight became lethargic and unwilling to eat or even drink water. I took her to the vet after a couple of days of this. There, they ran bloodwork and did an x-ray. They found nothing except a "high white blood cell count". Katie was prescribed an anti-nausea medication and an antibiotic. The bill was $450. Katie could not even keep down the medication, I had to squirt it in her mouth and it would cause a gag reflex, so she would vomit-actually dry heave- all over again. Within another two days I had her hospitalized so she could at least be hydrated and given the medication through the IV. In the 3 days she was there she ate once. They urged me to do an ultrasound, (another $200) but the Vet said even with that there was no guarantee they could see what was wrong. Without the ultrasound, the bill for the hospitalization was another $425. Katie has been home for 3 days and is no better than she was. She ate when she got home but threw that up in the morning when I gave her more antibiotics. She hasn't been interested in food since. I bought another dry cat food, but like an idiot I see now it is another PurinaOne, this one "Natural Blends". I really have no idea if the food is the culprit, but Katie is 12 years old, and has never been sick in her life. I am off to buy a different cat food, and am hoping Katie will come out of this OK. By the way, I put a call in to my Vet's office today, asking them about the possibility of Katie getting sick from the dry food, and they were saying that "No cats have gotten sick from dry cat food, and we have taken the Hill food off of our shelves as a PRECAUTION" Well, this has all come on so suddenly, how do they really know unless every food is tested?
I was looking up general articles about what is put in pet food, and I have to say that this is frightening. I hope I do not upset anyone by posting this, but I think everyone needs to be more aware:
" Dead Cats & Dogs Used To Make Pet Food " We see pictures of whole grains, prime cuts of meat and human grade vegetables on the bag, and we assume there's some chef in a pet food kitchen cooking up the best for our loved ones. Unfortunately, this is far from the truth. Most of what makes up dog and cat food comes from the rendering plant. To render, as defined in Webster's Dictionary, is "to process as for industrial use: to render livestock carcasses and to extract oil from fat, blubber, etc., by melting."When chickens, lambs, cattle, swine, and other animals are slaughtered for food, usually only the lean muscle is cut off for human consumption. This leaves about 50 percent of a carcass left over. These leftovers are what become what we so commonly find on pet food labels, such as "meat-and-bone-meal" or "by-products. "So basically, what pets eat are lungs, ligaments, bones, blood and intestines. Some other things that go into rendering to make your Cat and Dog Food are: * Euthanized companion animals Cats a Dogs * Spoiled meat from the supermarket, Styrofoam wrapping and all * Road kill that can't be buried on the roadside * The "4 D's" of cattle: dead, dying, disease and disabled * Rancid restaurant grease When dead animals from cow pastures are picked up, they may not be rendered until up to a week after they are dead. Because of this, it is estimated that E. coli bacteria contaminate more than 50 percent of meat meals. The rendering process destroys the bacteria, but it does not eliminate the endotoxins bacteria release when they die. These endotoxin, which can cause sickness and disease, are not tested for by pet food manufacturers. When all this comes to the rendering plant, it's put in a huge vat and shredded. Then it's cooked at 220 to 270 degrees for 20 to 60 minutes. After it cools, the grease is skimmed off the top. This is "animal fat." The rest is pressed and dried. This is "meat and bone meal."Dogs wouldn't eat this stuff in the wild, so why will they eat it out of their bowls? Their noses are tricked by the smell of it. The smell of animal fats for dogs and fish oil for cats is sprayed on the dry, bland kibble bits to make them appetizing. These flavors usually come from rendered restaurant grease, animal fat, or other oils unfit for human consumption. Huge conglomerates use pet food companies as a cheap, and even profitable, way of disposing of the waste from their human food companies. Three of the five major pet food companies are owned by these huge corporations. Who owns what? Corporation & Pet Foods: Nestle: Alpo, Fancy Feast, Friskies, Mighty Dog, Purina One Heinz: 9 Lives, Amore, Gravy Train, Kibbles-n-Bits, Nature's Recipe Colgate-Palmolive: Hill's Science Diet Proctor & Gamble: Eukanuba and Iams Mars: Kal Kan, Mealtime, Pedigree, Sheba, Waltham's VETERINARIANS AND PET FOOD:So why don't vets warn people? The question should be, what makes veterinarians think they can recommend food. In Food Pets Die For, Ann Martin says, Our family physician doesnt display weight loss products in the reception room So why is this going on in our veterinary clinics that do not specialize in nutrition. She says she considers it unethical for vets to sell pet food unless they are trained in pet nutrition. The reason your vet thinks so highly of the pet food they sell probably has more to do with money than nutrition. In vet school, the only classes offered on nutrition usually last a few weeks, and are taught by representatives from the pet food companies. Vet students may also receive free food for their own dogs and cats at home. They could get an Iams notebook, a Purina purse and some free pizza. The companies also hire students to be representatives for the company and to promote their products to other students. This issue was even placed on the agenda for an Executive Committee meeting at the vet school at Colorado State University. According to the minutes discussion was held on how to handle dealing with pet food companies and their donations of pet food to the university. It was agreed to put together a task force to discuss this issue, investigate the possibilities, and make suggestions to the Executive Council on how to work with the numerous pet food companies that want to donate to CSU. There was no further mention of this topic in meetings since. In May 2000, Purina made the announcement that in an effort to help university, veterinary hospitals provide optimal nutrition recommendations for dogs and cats, Ralston Purina is funding three new veterinary diet technician positions. They donated $100,000 to support these positions for the first year. How would you feel about a company that paid your salary? CHEMICALS IN PET FOOD:Because the ingredients in pet food aren't exactly as pure as consumers are made to believe, not only is the food unhealthy, it may also be poisonous. When the "food" comes out of the rendering plant, there's no way it would be bought by a consumer or eaten by a dog. To make it more pleasing to the eyes of owners and the mouths of animals, the producers of pet food add a myriad of chemicals. To keep the food fresh, the first thing added is a preservative. The bags of food must stay fresh through shipping and on the shelf. There are several synthetic preservatives out there: * Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) * Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) * Propylene glycol (also used as automotive antifreeze) * Ethoxyquin Their is little known about the effect these chemicals may have on an animal. Some experts and veterinarians claim ethoxyquin is the best and safest preservative on the market, others claim it is a potential carcinogen, causing skin problems and infertility in dogs. Some other things that may be added to your dog or cat food are: * Coloring agents * Drying agents * Flavoring agents * Lubricants * Nutritive Sweeteners * Texturizers IS THERE CAT AND DOG IN PET FOOD?:Reporter John Eckhouse was one of the first people to discover the practice of sending euthanized pets to the rendering plants. He quoted an employee of Sacramento Rendering as saying, "Thousands and thousands of pounds of dogs and cats are picked up and brought here every day."When a vet tells a grieving owner that they'll "take care" of their dead loved one, they usually mean sending it off with the disposal company for rendering. This is all perfectly legal. Many veterinarians and especially shelters don't have the money to bury or cremate animals.Although many in the pet food industry deny that they use euthanized animals, proof that the practice goes on continues to surface. Also Do you know what is in meat meal, the major constituent of dry dog/cat food?...Urine, fecal matter, hair, pus, meat (from animals, afflicted) with cancer and T.B., etc."
I can't refrain from anger and sorrow. Fortunately my cats are fine, but I don't know what to feed them now. I don't trust the pet food companies and the media any more. I can tell there are many more kinds of pet food are not safe. Cats are my children, I can't imagine if I lose them because of the food, how can they compensate me in any way! Who cares about returning the food, even the vet bill is nothing compared with the lives of our children! I am so ANGRY! We have to sue them! I keep all cats and dogs and their family in my prayers...Pet food companies have to pay the price, although it can never bring those who suffered and passed away back, perhaps we can use the money to save more animals, which can be somewhat a relief for the animal lovers.
My big Chesapeake dog has been sick for a couple of says, vomiting spitting up and not eatting any food at all, so I took him to the vet on Thursday. Lots of blood work later and much expense, it is kidney failure. He is droppy, sad, clingy. Is he suffering?, We don't know what to do,he won't eat. Should be do the unthinkable? Please help with your thoughs,we have always fed him Pedigree-he is only 6 yrs old.
My three dogs, a Scottish Terrier and 2 Bichons have been eating Nutro Natural choice canned and pouches as well as dry Nutro Senior food for several years. I have been heartbroken over this pet food poison news. I know my dogs ate some of the bad cuts and gravey in the pouches and now I wonder about their long term health. My 13 year old bichon has taken to urinating much more frequently and my vet thought she had a brain tumor based on some of her new symptoms. After$2,200 on an MRI and hospitalization and finding out that she has no tumor, I wonder if slow poisoning is the case. I now am feeding them the Nutro Senior Dry only with Pedigree cuts in gravy in pouches over it. One of my dogs refuses to eat it, in fact he backs slowly away from his food bowl and shakes until I remove the wet stuff and just give him dry. My hearts go out to all of you who have lost beloved pets. Is homemade food the only answer for them? I'm leaning in that direction.
I am ever so greatful that my very healthy 12 year old golden retriever fur son has a corn wheat allergy we have had him on Natural balance allergy formula dog food for the last 18 months no wheat glutten I am so sorry for all the losses here he is our baby I have two kittys also healty and I am scared to death that any cat food with make them sick one threw up last night ( no other symptoms ) I think it was a fur ball we feed him canned jack mackral it is not a cat food but is good for them cleanzes the liver of any impurities. I wish you all luck and I am again so sorry for your losses
I have a small dog that was a very picky eater. To get her to eat, I gave her turkey breast cut into small cubes. During a routine examination the vet asked what I feed her. I was advised by the vet to feed her dog food because it has important additives for dogs. She even told me that it isn't good to feed a dog cat food and vice versa. I only mention this for pet owners that plan to make pet food from people food. I don't know if the proper additives are available for pet food recipes. I am sure the affect of missing the important additives is far better than the effect of poison pet food. I offer my sympathies for anyone who has lost a pet. I know the feeling and I have learned the best remedy is to quickly replace the lost pet with a new one.
For Johanna POST #83
If you can afford it, take your dog to the vet and get him on IV treatments to see if that will resolve the issue. Ask the vet if he is suffering. Don't give up too soon.
My dogs eat dry pedigree which has not been listed yet!! My pit has been hardly eating. She has been eating a lot of grass and her eyes were dilated. Something is up!! She never not eats. The Irish wolfhound is also refusing to eat the Pedigree!! I have discontinued all dog food!! Anyone else having these issues with Pedigree?? Oh by the way the Pedigree site has been down for 2 days and in Asia they have pulled the Pedigree!! HMM
I am trying to find out what to do about my cat. She died after days of being sick. She stumbled, fell against the wall, quit eating, and drank lots of water. All she ever ate was Wal-Mart brand of Speical Kitty cuts with gravey. I had to have her put to sleep due to her kidneys shutting down. I know this may seem silly to some people but this cat named Luci was my best friend and I just about killed me to have to do this to her. I know in my heart that this cat food is what killed her. It feels like she was murdered.
I have posted my stories on the other question #is your dog sick" #67 and 4 others
I have been making homemade food with vit, enzymes, and extras.
After one very beloved rottie (5) gone suddenly and one lab (4) hanging on, what else can I do? AT THIS POINT I CAN ONLY SLEEP AT NIGHT KNOWING I AM NOT WILLINGLY GIVING THEM DEATH FOOD!!!
Alternative medicine and holistic advice may be the only help for the whole health and wellbeing of our loved pets. I am not a medical adviser just someone who has been effected by this whole situation.
I am grateful to our general Vet. but he has said he can do no more, and thats not enough for us!!
When I cry for my sweet love lost I cry for you all also.
My heart goes out to you all, thank you for sharing your painful stories.
My 10-month old cat Jade has been at the vet receiving IV treatments for 2 weeks now. His BUN started at over 130 (highest value that my vet could obtain a reading) and creatine was 13.6. Normal readings are 16-36 for BUN and .8 to 2.4 for creatine on average. They slowly came down to 62 and 4.0 as of Monday, April 2. Hopefully he can come home tomorrow. My bill so far is about $1700. I'm only learning and researching all of this medical stuff for my cat's sake. I've not lost hope because of the stories of others and their hope and websites like this one. I took it for granted that the food was safe...NEVER AGAIN. I hope that menu foods gets into some other kind of business that won't hurt living creatures, because I will never buy their food again! I expect they will change their name and continue making food the same way...Back to business as the CEO, Paul Henderson said on national news. Has anyone received a call from Menu Foods? They told me twice now..."I'll have a representative call you back with more information." I asked how long will that take...answer.."I don't know." I'm still waiting for a call...Deb in Pennsylvania
We had to take are kittytom to the vet this morning, and they said he had kidey failure too,and now they are giveing him fluids ,his bladder swollen up realy big and he was just hurting all over he would just sceam and i new something was wrong with him ,and he was vomiting alot too.We was giving him (special kitty gourmet blend in green bag)please can we do something about this before this hurts someone eles is animals!
I fed some Eukanuba morsels in gravy on Feb 15, 2007 to my cat in the morning and when I came home from work that night he could not stand, he was dead by 10:00 the next morning. My cat had cancer and I was buying various types of wet cat food in gravy to perk his appetite. At the time my vet attributed his passing to his cancer. Now I am not so sure. The various types of cat food I had purchased included Nutro Max Courmet Classics, Nutro Natural Choicein addition to Hills Science cut. I spared no cost when it came to types of food I purchased. I continued to feed this supply of food to Jack my outside cat who was fine and normal on Friday night and suddenly started showed signs of illness on Sunday morning I took him to the vet dehydrated and showing signs of kidney failure and he passed during the night of March 18, 2007. Now I am seeing a pattern here and do believe the food was the cause of death.
We just got back from the vet this morning. We had to put our precious cat, Sarah, to sleep. We, unfortunately, had been feeding her and our other cat, Buddy, Special Kitty brand in the pouches. She started acting different a couple of weeks ago, but was showing no signs of any real trouble. Then came this past weekend. She started following us around the house, not wanting to be more than a few inches from someone. Then, she just stopped eating. She started throwing up some kind of foamy substance and making a strange meowing sound. She lost weight really fast and when we got her to the vet, he said she was already in complete kidney failure. Everything seemed to go so quickly once she started showing signs of being sick. We've had her since she was 6 wks old. She would have been 10 in August. She was a very important part of our family. Buddy is confused and can't find his big sister anywhere. We're so torn-up over this. Fortunately for Buddy, he mostly likes to eat the dry cat food. The vet thinks the toxins he took in have pretty much worked through his system and he will be okay. We are not the type of people that take suing others lightly, but something has to be done. She had been a very healthy cat all her life. She did not deserve this!!
My 16 month old, 7 pound, toy poodle "Alex" passed away on March 5, 2007. He seemed to be healthy, except for drinking a little more water, until the morning he "got sick". At that time, there were no recalls and the vet said it looked like he died from seizures. The morning he died, he had signs of poisoning. He ate Iams dry puppy, and while I could not link this conclusively to his death, I just remembered he received CANINE CARRYOUTS as a frequent treat. Now that I look back, it seems that he may not have felt well after he started eating from a new bag. Unfortunately, I do not have them anymore. They contained wheat flour. I have not seen anyone else address these on this site. I am still tortured at his death and watching him suffer. Has anyone else lost a dog after eating these?
I find it sickening that companies are not offering payment to pet owner's vet bills. It is us, pet owners, who KEEP THESE COMANIES IN BUSINESS by buying their food. And treats. And toys. And everything else pet related. Pets are not just animals. To most they are FAMILY.
Hey, CEO, feed your child poison food and see how HORRIBLE you feel when they die.
hi everyone, it has been a sad long journey for everyone !!! i should know also i lost my 4 yr old female rott on feb 14th 2007,worst of all it was my 10th anniversary, they had to put her down there was no way to save her her kidneys and liver and pancreas ws so bad they could not repair anything , she went without food for 8 day , the verts even tried baby food but with no such luck she could not hold it down , her name was" stormy" a very big strong, loving & HEALThY DOG until about 10 days before she got laid to rest, i know that dry food is not on the list BUT DEeP IN MY HEART i know it is made with the same products & i had a tainted bad she had all the same symptoms , & i mean all !! the vets had no excuse what coud have caused any of this to a young healthy dog , this happened right befre the recall came out so nobody knew about it at that time . ( recall came out about 7 -14 days after she died) she ate the same food all the time always playful then one day , nothing ...no food , puking , runny stools excessive drinking water & urinating, leathergy it went on like this for 8 days would not even touch a steak or a bone i tried everything to get her to eat , dr said she would die after about 10 days anyways for non food consumption , her insides were so bad it was non fixable , no reason no cure no explaination, then this big recall... my kids husband & i are so sadly shook up , she has been part of our family & even slept on my bed ( 115lb ) . my 2 yr ,4 year 8, & 9 year old were devistated & wanted to know why stormy died casue she was not sick mommy what happened ?? i had no reason or answer& all i could do was to look into the tears in there eyes and say she is in doggy heaven now & god will protect her and make her better now . now i have a 550.00 vet bill i cannot afford , and making payments on for a mistake that the dog food company COULD HAVE PREVENTED if they had warned & checked the saftey of our pets food right from the start !it is so sad that these companies get away with these types of salmanellia & food poisioning and not have to pay out a dime or feel anybodys heart stricken sadness or cries because there loved ones are gone, they just put up money and move on while us & we the consumer have to suffer & pay the deadly price of there mistakes !!!!!!
would they feed there kids or family members tainted food ? that is how i feel about my animals !
please keep me posted ....

I am so sorry for your loss. I have also lost my beloved companion and have another in very bad condition.
I have posted many times over the last few weeks looking for answers or "clues" MY PREVIOUS POST ON THIS FORUM TOPIC WAS #90. I HAVE MOSTLY POSTED ON THE OTHER QUESTION " DOG FOOD RECALL IS YOUR DOG SICK." MY POSTS #67, 72, 76, 103, 132 PLEASE IF INTERESTED IN MY STORY READ THEM. ( It is too painful to write again! )
In answer to you, I bought a bag of Canine Carry Outs for the first time in Feb 07 to try and hide my sweet girls glucosamine tabs in so she would take it. I am looking at the bag right now. Manufactured by Del Monte. exp june 18 08. Is that the one you used?
I purchased it at our Southern CA. San Diego County Target. I know my dogs only had a few of them because I still have most of the bag.
I have been trying to figure this out, if these are poisoned they are really toxic because with one dead which may have had 4 or 5 pieces, another barely holding on with body tremors and unable to walk as of today, she did eat today however and her mind is alert (still homemade meals with enzymes and vit.)
This may be the link, but who knows for sure with the other Kirkland food we were feeding and the fact that we do not have all the info on the foods effected.
Thank you for sharing your stories so maybe we can find out some answers by putting the pieces together. It does not seem the companies or maybe anyone else will do it for us.
please for further contact I can be emailed at paigeburly@yahoo.com
Re: to #96 (shell)
I am sorry for your loss also. In answer to your question about the date on the Canine Carry outs bag, I do not know. I threw them away a day or two after Alex died. Sorry! I only know that they were a bag that I had purchased recently.
I don't trust any of them anymore after all this. So far, praise God, our pets seem to all be okay. We had the dogs on Science Diet dry and the cats on Purina dry. Even though these are not on the recall list, I have taken our pets off of commercial foods and am feeding them a raw diet. Quite honestly, even leftovers would be better than the crap they feed our animals, after I started reading up on it.
I'm also concerned about human food, though. A lot of foods have Wheat Gluten in them. Can we really trust a company like Menu Foods to be upfront and honest about where all they've used this contaminated wheat? It makes me want to move into the woods and grow my own food and I'm a city girl!
I hope that my pets remain okay, but my heart goes out to those who've lost pets or are battling to save sick companions. These pets are our babies and what has happened is nothing short of criminal. I hope this company pays for their greed.
Has anyone who has contacted Menu Foods actually heard back from them? I think someone needs to start tracking who has actually heard from them. We have made 4 attempts so far dating back since 3/20 and still have heard nothing. Yeah someone answers the phone and wants to take your info but no one ever calls back FROM Menu Foods.
Someone from Crawford & Co. finally called me back. They are representing Menu Foods. Suppose to be sending out paperwork i can submit to get the vet bills back. Now i am leaning toward getting in on the class action suit. They never once offered anything for the loss of my mom's dog. 14 years of loving a dog and taking care of her means nothing to them and i am upset. Progressive Law Group sent me info today and i am thinking about doing it. These people need to pay for our losses, not just money we paid out in vet bills. Tootie would be alive today if it were not for them and their screw ups. Anyone else wanting to participate, contact me at debfromlodi@yahoo.com and perhaps we can join forces.
For my pet dog Bowser (poodle) have had him to vet twice doing fine now but, won't feed him any dog food or treats. cooking up my own food for him. My heart goes out to all pet owners. Someone needs to step up to the plate on this one!!
Does anyone know what Menu Foods is offering to pay? Is there a set limit? So far my vet bills that I had to borrow money to pay amounts to $1700. My cat goes back to the vet next week for a re-check. What if he needs subcutaneous injections to survive...are they willing to pay for that?...If not, I'm willing to pay myself. How can I not pay whatever it costs..Do I have to sue to get them to pay for this. Luckily my cat has survived so far, but I'm not sure of the condition of his kidneys yet...Deb in PA...still waiting for a call from Menu Foods
My cat Loki started acting very strangely about a month ago. He seemed less friendly, and just layed around. He also started hiding places so that I could not find him. Then he started peeing on himself. He has done it a few times right in front of me and the only reason I noticed he was peeing (he was sitting/laying down) was because he made meowing sounds which sounded like he was hurt and it hurt to urinate. He would just sit there in his own urine and I'd have to move him because he never wanted to move anywhere. I find this very strange for a cat because of their issues with personal hygiene. I haven't taken him to the vet because I cannot afford it, but I started getting more and more worried about him. Then I heard about the recalls, I finally checked it out a couple of days ago and found out the treats that I'd been giving him - Pounce brand moist chicken flavor treats had been recalled by Del Monte foods because of Wheat Gluten. I really don't think a couple of treats here and there would make him sick and act the way he has lately. I am starting to think it's his food. I feed him dry Meow Mix, but I haven't heard anything about Meow Mix yet. If anyone else has had problems with Meow Mix please let me know. I also would like to know if anyone knows about a class action law suit against Del Monte, because I really want to get Loki help, but cannot afford it.
Comment for Tasha, #105...I'm not a legal expert, but I think that it's going to take time go get money from Menu Foods, or through a lawsuit. If your cat is sick, maybe your vet can work out a payment plan, or here is a site that someone on the walmart special kitty hub (see below) posted there...

Dear Joann, (please read my last post if interested #98)
I am so sorry to hear your post, I remember reading your last one with many tears, thinking of my sweet 5yr old Rottie that died suddenly on march 2. I never got to say goodbye. Our 4yr choc lab is so bad this weekend, she has no use of her legs, full body tremors, at this point but is eating and alert. It seems like Neurotoxicity, caused by whatever poison might have been in the food or treats I fed them before (which are still not on the recall list, Hmmm) and the meds the vet prescribed for the 2 weeks he was treating her. The vet last week said he had done all he could for her and that the next action for us if we wanted would be to go to a Neurologist and have a MRI to rule out a brain tumor or bring her home and make her comfortable and try whatever alternative action we thought might help ("you never know it might just work", he said) . I just cannot believe this diagnosis could happen so suddenly, due to the other circumstances surrounding this whole food situation.
I can't help but hold on to some hope, but it is getting hard.
I felt so grateful yesterday to be able to spend the whole day with her outside where she usually lays. I read of course, on alternative pet treatments.
We will have to make some hard decisions come Monday.
Are you trying raw beef and baked deboned chicken? I have also been able to purchase some fresh liquid raw colostrum from a health food store (I only give 1/2 cp 2x aday, but it helps to keep from her getting dehydrated and stimulates her appetite and it also has enzymes and probiotics to help with digestion) I have been cutting top sirloin into very small pieces, blending organic slightly steamed veggies and chicken broth. Adding a small amount of enzymes for digestion along with a vitamin powder. I know that is alot to figure out all at once it has taken me a few weeks to purchase all the items. But at first I was just giving raw beef in very small pieces for easy digestion, to keep her eating.
Also Bachs rescue remedy (mixed flower essence) has been very helpful for the stress 2 drops in the mouth for her and 2 for me!
I truly hope all will get better for you and your family and sweet companions. I hope that for everyone!!
Again to all, Thank you for sharing your stories to hopefully help someone else.
hi shell ,
sorry to hear about your dog to , it is sad very sad , just right now i am cooking beef hamburger & chicken with a little rice & some veggies & a little tomato sauce, when you have 3 dogs and a cat it can get quite expensive to buy everything seperate, so i am doing what i can , little at a time ... my heart goes out to your lab & to all pets that have past away & are sick !!!i hope all is well ... i am waiting to see how my other 3 are doing before i take them to get them checked , trying to get them to eat , gotta go cook up some food .....sincerly jo
I cook for my dogs now. I just fix chicken, rice, vegies and make a gravy to put over it. I have to continue giving them dry with the food i cook tho. I am using chicken soup for the pet lovers soul. i can't figure out what is going on, it is llike someone is purposely killing our pets. i lost my mom's dog a few weeks back to kidney failure, she was eating food on the recall list. i just don't know who to trust anymore and am seriously considering getting in on the class action suit. i don't know what to do, i am under so much stress caused by this. if something happens to my babies, i will just die. honestly. they are my life.
menu foods has not called me back jake has been gone for 8 days . it is not right !!! what can we do ????
I just recently built a website where those who has suffered horrible losses or experiences with there pets due to the recent pet food recall are posting their stories. It is a great way for people to vent their problems, tell their stories and even post pictures of their pets. The food companies are NOT taking any responsibilty for this horrific nightmare we are all going through and maybe this website can make a difference. They forget, pets are a part of are family too. We need to hold them accountable.
Go to www.petfoodnightmares.com to share your Thoughts.

Hello ~ I posted an earlier comment (#79) and I went ahead and got Katie an ultrasound done on 4/3/07 becasue she had woken up in the morning, and one of her pupils was a big round black circle, while the other was a skinny sliver. The vet could not stimulate a response from her eye. They said she could have a tumor, and that they could not tell me more until they performed an ultrasound. They are normally $600 but I was able to get a discounted one for $250 by traveling to one of their sister sites. Long story short, NOTHING was found on the ultrsound. So, I have paid close to $1,500 for exams, meds, hospitalizations etc.. NO ANSWERS from 4 vets---they all are literally scratching their heads. Again, Katie does not seem to have kidney failure, and the doctors agreed that cancer in pets does NOT come on violently overnight. The last thing they told me to do: anti-biotics and steroids (to bring down inflammation that they suspect is causing her high white blood cell count). She is weak, limping, still vomiting almost every day.... and generally just hanging on. I switched her diet to the next best thing short of cooking her food myself (I tried, chicken and rice, she won't touch it). So I went to Petco and got Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance - both dry and canned. They have a purple and blue bag "allergy" formula dry made with NO GRAINS such as wheat, barley, corn and oats. The canned has venison & green pea, there is also chicken, and also turkey. I think we all know this---cats are carnivores, and they need proper meat. I am not an expert, but the more I research---the more it becomes clear that the artificially colored stuff we may buy at the grocery store, be it dry or canned, or in the pouches---is GARBAGE made with nasty BY-PRODUCTS, that are not human grade, and no cat would eat this crap out in the wild. I know we can't all afford healthier organic food, but then please consider making the food yourself. If the pet food is sold in the grocery store----DON'T BUY IT! Be wary of the food even at Petco or Petsmart, you must look for the very few healthier brands sold at these retailers. Or buy direct online, healthy organic cat/dog food. You are only slowly (or quickly) giving your pet a death sentence if you feed it the garbage that is so common in the stores. Remember, these pet food giants make BIG MONEY by skimping on quality nutrition, and putting in only the cheapest fillers. It is BIG BUSINESS, they do not care about the health of our pets. Educate yourself on proper pet nutrition. Google "healthy pet food" etc....you will find answers and solutions. I want to give you my prayers and condolences on your losses, it looks as though I am going to join you in your pain very soon as Katie is just not doing well. God Bless.
MY LOVE, MY DOG CHARLIE, AFTER EATING PEDIGREE WET DOG FOOD WAS EXTREMELY SICK. HE WAS SHOWING ALL THE SYMPTOMS, VOMITING PROFUSIVELY, WATER DRINKING. I TOOK HIM TO THE VET ONCE AND THEY GAVE ME SOME PILLS TO GIVE HIM. WELL IF THE DOG IS VOMITING HOW IS HE SUPPOSED TO KEEP THE PILLS DOWN? SO THEN IT BECAME WORSE AND I HAD TO TAKE HIM TO THE EMERGANGY VET. AFTER BEING HOOKED UP TO AN IV OVERNIGHT AND FED MORE PILLS, HE IS DOING BETTER......MY QUESTION IS DID ANYBODY ELSE HAVE PROBLEMS WITH PEDIGREE WET FOOD?....... ALSO THIS WAS A QUICK PROCESS OF GETTING SICK IT HIT HARD AND FAST. I AM COOKING FOR MY DOG NOW.
Rushed my dog to the vet Feb. 26, a day or so after he had eaten Pedigree Beef in Sauce. He was diagnosed with an inflamed bowel. No tests were done as he had no temperature and had no noticeable symptoms other than blood red gums and tongue and a rock-hard stomach which was tender to the touch. The vet gave him an inflammatory shot, two weeks of antibiotics, and pills for diarrhea (which he did NOT have.) He acted fine the next morning and I continued feeding him Pedigree. He wouldn't eat the Beef in Sauce again. I had to throw it out, but he would eat the Combo meals (sometimes.) Talked to my vet today and he thinks it was an isolated incident---not related to the food--and sees no reason for any liver or kidney tests. For now, I will follow his advice and pray that he's right. I told him that I'm now feeding Blue Buffalo and he said ,"Well, it has to be better than Pedigree." I will continue feeding Blue Bufflao dry and canned unless I find something better. Also would like to add this: My 11 yr. old Doberman died suddenly last Sept. after eating Pedigree (in sauce.) She had breast cancer and we (the vet and I) thought the cancer had finally caught up with her. Thing is, she was playing like a puppy on Sat., didn't feel great on Sunday, Monday showed signs of being sick so I took her to the vet and got some medicines. My vet was leaving town Tuesday morning so we made arrangements to have her put down Fri. morning upon his return as he was sure she wouldn't die before then. Tuesday morning she ate and went outside. She could barely walk back into the house and her breathing was very labored. Knowing she wasn't going to last much longer, I made her a hamburger for lunch and she ate every bite. About 6 P.M. she "asked" to go out. Again, she barely made it back inside, stumbled over to her crate, got in it , layed down and started moaning. I knew it was useless to try to get her to the vet so I cradled her head and told her what a good girl she had been all her life and how much she was loved and that it was ok for her to "go now." I sat there crying and talking to her and watched blood pour from her nose until she took her last breath. I wonder now if it was the cancer or the food that killed her so suddenly and violently. My heart goes out to all of you who have lost your loving pets as well as to those of you who, like me, trusted your pet food provider and now have sick pets. May this craziness end soon.
Has everyone heard about this guy selling his stock just before the recall got announced?http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNew You think this guy can lend us some money to pay our vet bills? I think this seems too "coincidental". And still I'm waiting for a call from Menu Foods...Deb in Pennsylvania..owner of Jade.
I miss my Teddy Bear so much!.. My Heart is broken...
I miss my Teddy Bear so much!.. My Heart is broken...
Is anybodys dog getting sick on Pedigree dry dog food or Milk Bone dog bisquits? My dog started bleeding from his pee pee 24 hours after a Milk Bone which happened on Easter Sunday. Monday morning he was vomiting yellow stuff and blood. I rushed him to the hospital and they put him on antibiotics for now. He is acting a little bit better but still refuses to eat the Pedigree. He is going to get human food from here out.
Don't over look the DRY dog food. My dog was on dry and she had all the symptoms, especillay drinking excessively and peeing way more, then she passed in my arms. The first 3 ingredients included wheat gluten. Pedigree was all she ate. It had been coming on but the day she passed it was bad.
I thought dry food was ok. My cat just died of kidney failure. All he ate was dry meow mix. And we did not see any recalls. The vet said he died of kidney failure. He stopped eating, barely moved around, vomitting, and unable to urinate. I watch, my friend and my kid's best friend die. We took him to the vet on 04-12-07 and he died at the vet the next morning.
My 4 year old chocolate old lab started drinking & urinating more as well as vomiting. Her breathing seemed different, and she was obviously not herself. At the time she was eating Nutro dry food. She stopped eating it on her own, then we switched to Iams. To make a long story short 2 months later and $2000 in vet bills we had to have our sweet girl put to sleep due to extreme liver failure. She was perfectly healthy before that and had regular vet check ups. We are positive that it is the dry food that killed our beloved family member. I check the internet every day to see if the dry food has been recalled. I've read comments on this site that others have had similar happenings with dry dog food. Are any of the dry foods being tested from these companies. Unfortunately I didn't keep the bag from the Nutro because it was a week or two before the wet food recalls. I did however keep the Iams. I would appreciate any information that any has that comes available regarding the dry food. My heart goes out to everyone that has a pet that has been effected by this. My family is heart broken, as I am sure yours is. Some how some way these maunfacturers must be held accountable for what they have allowed to happen to these beloved members of all of our families.

Treat me kindly, my beloved friend, for no heart in all the world os more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me.
Do not breakmy spirt with a stick, for though i might lick your hand between blows, your patience and understanding will ,ore quickly teach me the things you would have me to learn
Speak to me often, for your voice is the world's sweetist music, as you must know the firece wagging of my tail when the sound of your footsteps falls upon my ear.
Please take me inside when it is cold and wet for i am a domesticated animal, no longer accustomed to bitter elements. i ask no greater glory than the privilage of siitin at your feet beside the hearth,
Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for i cannot tell you when i suffer thirst.
Feed me CLEAN FOOD that I MAY STAY WELL, to romp and play and do your bidding, towalk by your side and stand ready. willing and able to protect youu with my life, shouled your life be in danger...
And, my friend, when I am very old and I no longer enjoy good health, hearing and sight, do not make heroic efforts to keep me going. i am not having any fun, Please see to it that my life is taking gently. I shall leave this earth knwing with the last breath i draw that my fate was always safest in your lovining hands...

We have had Licorice, our Shihtze-poo, for 7 years. He has never been sick a day in his life and was a perfect dog. We had 2 of these beautiful dogs, a male and female. They were like husband and wife having had 2 litters, playing happily together daily. They were the cutest couple and my wife's shadows. They followed her everywhere, sat in her lap, and obeyed her every word dutifully. Just last week they were chasing the bunnies in our yard together, barking, and frolicing healthily. Then Licorice began spitting up, and urinated constantly. He stopped eating, began drinking alot of water, but vomited after every drink. As we saw this progress we became very concerned, and took him to the vet. They did a blood test and found his kidney numbers were off the chart. Licorice was immediately put on IV for 2 days but to no avail. Yesterday, I went to the vet to inquire as to Licorice's progress. My wife couldn't come, she was too upset. After the Vet told me that there really wasn't much he could do, I had to sign papers to have our little faithful companion put down. I didn't think it would bother me, but as I signed the papers, I lost it, looking at his little helpless face. Obvoiusly, my wife is still upset and we are concerned for our little 3 year old female, cookie. We don't even know how this happened, and so quickly. We fed them the best dog foods and thought we had avoided the contaminated foods. We now think that it must have been the jerky.
DEAR dazzled_1,
MILK BONES ARE LISTED ON THE RECALL LIST ALSO!
Kim
I do not see Milk Bones on the recall list anywhere. I havent given him anymore bones or dog food. I started fixing him rice and chicken or beef for now until I can figure out what is safe to feed him. He stopped bleeding but now he is throwing up the rice from the night before...like he is not digesting.

So sad to hear of your loss.
I have one gone and one fighting for recovery, she is 4 almost 5 choc lab, we went the full treatment with the vet and made our own food and now are using alternative treatments, she is recovering very slowly but we almost put her down last wekend because it was so bad but the Dr. was closed for 3 days for Easter. Over those 3 days she really started to show improvements. It is now 8 days later and we are so pleased we went the extra miles, no kidding it has been a lot of time and money and love but with one gone suddenly with no choice in the matter this is helping us to heal and also to help our sweet girl through a major illness. We believe she has neurotoxicity caused by whatever poisoned food she was eating plus side effects from rx trtment(which in turn may have saved her life) very complicated..........
I share this story only to let others know some may recover but it requires some alternative methods please check into it
All the best to everyone and I share in your pain
Someone asked 'WHY DO VETS RECOMMEND CERTAIN FOODS?". I'll tell you why. Because it's probably something they vend at the office! I used to work as a Vet Tech in Ca. They recommended Science Diet. A good enough food I guess. They did it because they bought it for pennies on the dollar and sold it for 1000% mark up! This guy paid for his Chalet in Lake Tahoe with it. The meds they give are the same. If you ever meet a poor Vet It's because he's honest.
I'm sure most are of the honorable variety but I have to tell you some of the cruelties I witnessed made me quite the profession. This guy was there for the money and did not really even like animals. I saw him break a glass thermometer off inside a dog and not only not own up to it but said it'll crap it out on it's own why upset the ownwer! If your pet is obviously scared to go to the Vet think twice about the place your going to. What happens when your there may be totally different then when your not. I only took my animals back to places they were not scared to go to. If after a visit they were very scared or reluctant to go back I found another Vet. I actually saw my animals look forward to the visits when the Vet and the staff were gentle and caring for real not just for show.
I too just lost my best friend Tigger. He only ate Purina foods. Naturals, Fancy feast wet and dry. He died within four days. He had Feline Leukemia but was doing well for six years. Two of which he only acted rather lazy. I thought his food was safe! I don't see any of these on the recall list. His desease could not have done what happened to him that fast. So I have to believe it was the food. I beleive they are not telling us the whole truth. I believe this problem is much more wide spread and worse then any of us know. I beleive that for the sake of profit they will continue to kill our loved ones unless something is done! Something must be done. These bastards must be made accountable. It could be our human family members next!

He asked me a few questions about what happened, he was from the company he said with no phone # to call him back, but I got it with *69 anyway but no one answers, big surprise !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Told me to have a nice day(right) and would send me packet in mail.

As you can see by the pic, I do not take things lightly, I do not wish to offend anyone, but I am really damn upset for all of you and myself................................Love and prayers to all my friends here that have lost as I have lost!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hello everyone, I go by Dovelite on the computer. I am the lady in the pic on this site and my baby had already passed at the time. Her name was RouxRoux, pronunced RooRoo. Shw was an angel, she was a hugger, both paws wrapped around my neck and went everywhere I did in the house. I miss her constantly she passed on 4-1-2007. She kept me going, I lost my 40 year old son in an accident on 6-5-2007 and my furry kids help a lot. My daughter directed me to this site and took the pic due to the food problem to document what happened that night.

comment for #134...I also received the packet from Crawford Company. It's a document about 10 pages long requesting all the information about a sick or deceased pet and what food they ate, etc. They also want copies of all my vet bills and copies of bloodwork. When I spoke to the person on the phone, they said they were "gathering information" at this point. The person didn't say that my vet bills would be re-imbursed so I'm not sure what is going to happen after I send the packet back to them. I never received a call from Menu Foods. I called about 5 times and was told "a representative will call you back." That call never came...so I located the phone number for the CEO of Menu Foods, Paul Henderson on the internet and left him a voicemail. I got a call the next day from his secretary, and she had Crawford Company call me. I no longer have that phone number but if you do some google searches, maybe you can find it...tell Paul Henderson what you think. I also found some email addresses but most of those came back undelivered. My cat Jade is still alive luckily but he needs bloodwork next week. I am very sorry that your cat RouxRoux suffered...Deb in Pennsylvania (My original post is on the other HUB, WAL MART BRAND SPECIAL KITTY GOURMET BLEND CAT FOOD)

to 136 and 137,
Thank you for your response. I was also feeding WalMarts Special kitty canned chicken chunks in gravy. She loved it!!!!!!!!!!!!! and it killed her!!!!!!!!!!!
I am making a mix of ground beed or turkey, rice, chicken broth, 1 can of tuna in water and kitty vities to feed for wet food. I put it in small containers, freeze it and take what I need out for next day.
I am now questioning the dry food and have taken it up till I know what I am going to do, if anyone is interested in wet food I will give you the amounts on request.
Thanks and Love and Hugs to all,

URGENT For Dog Owners.
Commercial Dog Food is Killing Your Dog. http://tinyurl.com/23tbs3See more detail. How to prepared food safety for your dog.5 simple things you must do now right now to protect your dog from Death-by-Diseasesadly today i woke up to my mother telling me that my black lab of 8 years boo boo had to be put asleep, due to a brain tumor. the vet told us that it could be because he eats ol'roy dog food. he sudenly got sick out of nowhere, and had to be put asleep like a week later. it hurts so bad! this was my best friend since the 7th grade! i want revenge! and i have no idea what to do!!!!! it makes me sick! he has been eating ol'roy for a while and I had no idea about this problem... I HOPE OL'ROY GETS SHUT DOWN!
My cat cindy was taken to the vet last Wed evening April,25 2007. I knew somwthing was wrong that afternoon because she was just laying around. Cindy is a 4 year old cat that is very active. They said at the vet that it looked like pet food poisening and was affecting her kidneys. Today is Sunday april 29 and she is still in the hospital on an IV and she has started eating friday a little. So I go tomorrow, Monday and they will run a blood test to see if flushing her kidneys with the IV has helped. Cindy was eating Canned Friskies shredded chicken and Salmon in gravy since it came out last fall. She loved it and I checked and it was not on the recall list then or now though it contains wheat gluten. But it has made her sick and I want to be reimbursed for her vet bill. They should not be selling anything that contains wheat gluten. I am so mad at a company that claims that they are not at fault for this!!!! I am telling everyone that I know to not buy Purina pet food.
What's sad is loosing your old man who was 14 in overall good health except for a little bit of arthritis, that was contained with arthrigen. Then loosing him almost overnight to this crap. I usually fed him only chicken and lamb but decided to buy a few beef product too. That's what killed him. Every single can of beef products purchased were on the recalled list. He started having seizures, vomiting blood, he couldn't even move. I was going to put him down but it was Sunday, by morning he was gone. When he was picked up the lady said he smelled so bad he had to have been dead for atleast 4 days. I was so infuriated, I was with him until 4 in the morning when I checked him again at 5 he was gone, I lovingly pet him as he barely breathed and told him it was ok to let go and sleep. He did. He was a beautiful pure bread Black lab that gave us lots of love, and was taken away too soon because of the poison they put in. When we cared for him ever so dearly, money was no matter. Evidentally not to the big business of pet food industries, our babies mean nothing to them but income. I guess life does have a price on it.
Please someone help me to find a safe canned dog food for my dogs. Hank has had diahhrea the past two mornings, all over the living room floor, due to people food. I don't know what to feed him but i cannot go on cleaning the carpet every day. i can't keep him outside, he loves the house.
to debfromlodi -- About Diarrhea--First check stool for Clostriduim/my dog/& it seems many others are having this issue. I dont know why. Beside treating animal,I am checking out Orijen & Wolf Pet Foods. Orijen has no Vit. C added --which is an issue w/some breeds/mixed breeds. It has no grains & high quality ingredients. I am feeding my dog boiled chicken/brown rice/half cup Diamond Lamb Meal & Rice 2x a day. Now his diarrhea is gone-Jake 13-was treated w/Flagel from Vet-. I also boiled water for 15 min.-cooled-perhaps over kill--but I will continue to do this. No more dog treats--I am using baby carrots for treats--I hope this is ok. I will be adding green beans & pumkin to his diet soon. I didnt notice if Oijen or Wolf has Canned Food--but you can check. There are Safe Foods. This site- hubpages-has that list. Dont wait to get dog stools checked & Vet. Good Luck
To River: Please say you are not feeding them this: Diamond Pet Foods has announced it is withdrawing a limited number of canned products manufactured by American Nutrition. This action is limited to three specific canned products: Chicken Soup for the Kitten Lover's Soul Kitten Formula 5.5 oz. cans, and Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lover's Soul Puppy Formula 13 oz. cans, and Diamond Lamb & Rice Formula for Dogs 13 oz. cans.
DebFrom Lodi---I know about the recalls--I only use DRY--no canned--but ironically when I was looking for a safe food for my cat I purchased one can Kitten Chicken Soup-& I was trying so many foods at the time he --I think most of it was thrown out as he refuses many foods. U can imagine my shock when it was recalled later. Thanks for your concern-I have been looking for another dry food--not because Diamond Adult Lamb DRY is on the recall list --it is not--but still--while Diamond has posted there is no problem--no cross contamination--& no reports about animals getting sick from their food--do I still worry--YES!! Also--Diamond makes food for other Premium and expensive foods--so this is why I am looking at other grain free foods. It will be financially hard for me to afford these foods, but chicken isnt cheap & all the other stuff that is necessary for animal health. The following is not about food but I have been bothered about this for a year. I had a problem looking for glucosomine & chronditon that was NOT from China. I read about some issues on that & had lots of trouble finding out the true country of origin from these products. I settled on one for my dog-it was human grade--but stopped using it because of diarrhea. I did 2 trial ones/w same results. BTW it did seem to help my dogs rear legs. So wish I could have used it. I only mention this because it is a problem when you cant find the ORIGIN of a product because it goes thru so many hands. Thanks again for your concern--each day I cringe & worry about the kibble, perhaps I will just stop using it to be safe.
I have been feeding them Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul. I noticed they too have recalls but i don't know what else to do. I live in fear, i love my babies as do you. I just couldn't deal with the diarrhea with people food.
To DebFromLodi--It seems you are on top of the issue if you are at this site-what more could a person ask for to have this site to turn to & all the info some of these Blog Writers share. Some of these bloggers know more then I will ever know the rest of my life. If the food you use is not on recall and your pet friend is NOT having diarrhea-- what more can you do? Since you know which Pet Lovers is on recall--just avoid them.. All we can do is check each day or often as possible for recall info. Yes I can tell you love your animal friend. I am assuming your Dog has improved. I think it is hard to make the switch to human food & some dogs may get diarrhea. I hope to use Wolf or Orijen or something similiar but in the dry foods. Everyone has to decide for themselves and stay alert and not panic.
I have a 15 year old dog named sissy. I don't know what I will do when she is gone. I have said a prayer for all the folks who have lost a pet with this horrid recall. I also pray they fix the problem.
Luv,
GRANNY
I am upset. i have been working with the insurance company tryiing to get back the monies paid to the vets. they have agreed to pay me back for my mom's dog that died but are refusing to pay for my 2 dogs when i took them in for blood work after being told by menu foods to STOP FEEDING NUTROMAX CHICKEN DOG FOOD TO MY DOGS IMMEDIATELY. Of course i took them for blood tests. the food i was feeding them was not on the recall list and yet i was told to stop feeding it to them. i would not have taken them in for the $175.00 tests if they had not told me that. now they are refusing to pay for that bill. is it possible to accept payment for the dog that died plus file a class action suit for the 2 dogs i had tested? they did offer to pay a replacement fee for the dog that died if i could show proper documentation. that was 14 years ago, how am i to remember that? she was my mom's dog and my mom is 90 yrs old, in a rest home and does not even know that she lost her dog. i am not sure what to do here and could use some advise.
You need to make a choice. Do you want to get the money back and let it go? Or, do you want to get your money back, stand your ground, and make a point?
No, you shouldn't expect to be able to file a class action if you take a settlement check from the pet food company. I'm not saying it can't be done...just don't expect it.

OUr hearts go out to all of you who lost your pets. WE lost our dear cat Stubbie after he suddenly became lethargic, lost his appetite, and starting losing weight and not eating...he had been eating mainly the Nutro Max Gourmet Classics Senior formula DRY food and we only recall giving him 1-2 of the wet pouches by Nutro...We took him to the vet and his numbers for the kidney functions was 24, with a 4 being normal...the vet couldn't believe he was even alive...this is so unfair! Something must be done to help those who have lost their precious pets!
I feel so heartsick for all who have watched their beloved pets suffer and die. I have just rescued two feral kittens and even though I have not been their "mama" for very long I can not imagine how sad I would be if they got sick and died. And then to find out it was from their food! ... Unbelievable! For the people who lost pets who have been in their lives for years I can not even imagine the devestation. My prayers are with you as you cope with this tragedy. Even though nothing can bring back those most loved dogs and cats, the pet food companies who allowed this to happen need to be held accountable in a severe way, to ensure that this will never happen again.
For River, FYI, Flint River Pet Food has a Senior Plus Formula that has Glucosamine and Chondrotin made here in the US. I order from a website listed here on hubpages. I love the food, although I have not tried the Senior one. www.frrco.com/122135.
Connie,
I've reviewed several of Flint River Pet Foods and they scored great!

Wow, Connie if you didn't buy from me I would of figured that you sold Flint River yourself! If you want to be a distributor contact me and I can set you up. cbwdbs@yahoo.com. Thanks Susan and Connie.

Hi, Sherry and Susan, Glad I can help. I just really like Flint River. I really don't want to distribute the food, I don't use that much of it to maintain the 100lbs per month. Sherry, I just hooked up a friend to your Flint River website her name is Mary ____, (I don't want to list her last name on here unless she does it) I think that she is interested in buying some food for her cats. Susan thanks for all of the reviews, it really helped me out as I am sure many others as well. Maybe all of us can now feed our pets safely with SAFE foods that you have reviewed. To all that lost pets, I am so sorry for your losses.
I just wanted to update on my quest to find out what killed my poodle. I posted here about 7 weeks ago. I wanted to let everyone know that I now think it was walnuts, and more specifically, the fungus that grows on walnuts, that caused his seizures and death. I ran across a website that addressed this a couple of days ago.
Melissa, did your dog eat walnuts or were they in some type of food? I know this question is for Susan but I was curious because we eat walnuts everyday in our garden salad. I don't usually feed them to the dogs but you never know?
Sherry and Melissa,
I was wondering about the walnuts, too. How was it your poodle ate the walnuts? How did you find out something was wrong with them and were you eating the walnuts, too?
Susan
It has been 2 months since I lost my pom to Pedigree Puppy food. I still miss her so. In the meantime I have tried to ease the empty spot she left in my heart with 2 furry balls of love. (Shih Tzus) I couldn't bring myself to get another Pom yet. Anyway they are eating Purina Healthy Morsels Puppy Food (Dry) and they love it. But one has loose stools and the emergency vets say there is nothing wrong but there has to be something causing it. I tried to switch them to Innova, an all natural dry food which is suppose to be USA products, human food, and the one with the problem loved it but my male went on a food strike and wouldn't eat for a day and a 1/2. I finally had to give him the other food back since Shih Tzus have to eat or their sugar levels will drop too low. I even had to wash his bowl so he couldn't smell the other food. I can't afford to keep buying different foods for him to try and they eat together, free feed, so they both have to eat the same thing. Everyone else says their pets loved the Innova but not mine or my cats. Does anyone have another food he might eat that I can get a small quanity of in case he doesn't like it? Meantime they are scheduled back to another vet June 6th. Hopefully everthing will work out. May God give all of you peace in your hearts over your losses.
Judith, I am sorry to hear of the loss of your pom. Innova is suppose to be a good food. The difference with the taste could be that most commercial pet foods spray on flavor from the rendering plant's dead animals and they use rancid oils and greases from resturants for taste. Innova and other holostic foods don't normally do that, making the holostic food not as tastey at first. I use a holistic food as do the rest of my family and my mother's dogs went on a hunger strike at first too! Can you try gatorade or something else with sugar in it and try to stick with the Innova for a while. There is just so much controvesary over commercial dog food and Purina, made by Nestles has had problems not to mention they are being sued for improper labeling. Now I read that there is something called cyanauric acid in pet food. I am not sure that I am spelling that correctly and I don't know much about it yet but from what I remember, these pet foods have not yet been recalled. Does anybody know anymore on this? If you want to try another holistic food I could send you some FREE samples of my holistic pet food. Email me directly at cbwdbs@yahoo.com if you are interested. Good Luck in whatever you decide to do.
Oops, there I go again joining in a conversation that wasn't mine. Sorry, Susan and Judith. I have a tendency to talk a lot, especially when comes to the health and well being of animals. I am going back to look for that stray dog that I have been tracking now for a week. Susan, did I tell you that I have caught the injured stray and she is going up to Purdue for further care come Monday.
Sherry,
You had a more timely response to Judith than I did. You told her just exactly what I would have told her but I would like to add something.
Judith,
Are you sure your Shih Tzu didn't eat anything for a day and 1/2? When feeding a quality pet food the pets will eat 1/4 or less than they do of the junk food we can get from Purina, etc. Sherry is right...pet food companies put "stuff" on the food to make pets eat corn and other items they normally wouldn't eat. This "stuff" encourages a huge appetite then the lack of minerals and good stuff causes an even greater desire to eat.
A pet food with contents which is digestable (meaning the food is used by the body) doesn't require near as much to keep the ol' tummy full and the body healthy.
I know we are talking about dogs here but Meow Mix is a great example of how crappy food keeps our pets asking for more. The cats seeme to go crazy over Meow Mix, get fat and are starving to death. The cats beg for food because their bodies can't function on the junk that is in the food and the cats desire more. Over 75 % of Meow Mix is unusable by the cat body. That leaves just a trace of the stuff the cat's body can use...now comes the question of how much of the "good stuff" is actually "Good Stuff"!
Back to you, Sherry.
Keep me updated! Keep up the good advice, too.
Susan
Hi Susan, It is so funny I just had a phone conversation with somebody who just introduced a holositc pet food. She says, "Sherry my dogs just are not eating" I asked if the dogs were losing weight, her response was "no". I asked if the dogs ate anything any of the new food at all, her response was "well yes, they eat but not as much as they were". I asked her if she read the label for feeding requirments....Susan, she didn't, she assumed they should eat the same amount as they did on the commercial food. To this womans surprise her dogs were eating less of the holostic food and were totally satisfied and getting the nutrients they need without the garbage and crap to make them "CRAVE" more food. I just hung up with her about 2 hours ago.
Sherry,
The common thing I have found is that everyone wants to buy junky food from the store and "make" their pets eat. I have to remind almost everyone I speak to that it is not necessary for their pets to eat all the time. These are not grazing animals and good foods will keep a body happy.
Glad to have your thoughts, as always!
Susan
Yours too!
What is up with this? With reports that acetaminophen has recently been found in some brands of cat and dog food not included on the Menu Foods recall list, the ASPCA is urging pet parents to stay vigilant to signs of illness in their pets as large doses of acetaminophen, just like many other human medications, can be extremely toxic.
ASPCA had this on their website. Susan, do you have any info?
Deb, I do have information on this. Wait 'til you hear this!
The meds in the pet food are added at the rendering plant. This is stuff that the animals which were rendered came in with in their systems.
No checking is done as far as the history of the animal's illness or death. Just grind 'em up and toss 'em in.
Susan
On June 25th I have lost my 16 years old cat, for me, my furry kid.
Matisse and I have been always together. He would hug me and kiss me on the face, he would follow me anywhere I was in the house. We were a happy family.
I have been feeding him Nutro Max and Natural Choice and, I thought it was the best food on the market. Matisse was a healthy cat, suddenly he started to show signs of problems: drinking a lot, loosing weight quickly and... I cannot even start to describe the pain I am going through and his eyes that did not want to leave me.
In those eyes that did not want to leave me he has been with me since he was about 4 weeks he moved to the USA with me from Italy. I loved and love him more than anything in the world. It's the first time that I can write about him but, still I cannot deal with the crude reality...
I spent more than 3,000$ in Vet bills, Hospital and, medications in 5 months to try to get him well. I am a teacher...but for my baby I would have even sold anything in my house to get the money for his cures.
I cannot forgive myself for having fed him that killer food.
But, since he has been fighting his illness for 5 months, I would like to continue his fight and join any class action lawsuit against those criminals. Can you help me?
I am in NYC.
Thank you for your help.
Rossana
Rossana,
I am so sorry for your loss. What a beautiful story you have written. Here is the link to where you may sign up for the Class Action http://www.mflegal.com/

I had a cat named Annie. She wasn't that important to me untell about two years before she got kidney failure because of the recall.I loved her so much, don't believe me, she died May 5, 2007 at 12:53p.m.Who actually knows what time there animal died?A little bit before a week after she died there was a recall. One of those foods was hers.It just made it worse!IMay 5 I lost my best friend, sister, anything you want to call her she was mine.I want to know how to help, anything in anyway so nobody else has to loose there best friend and sister or brother.Any websites? Thanks!
Mak,
We've all had pets fall sick or die during the pet food recalls of 2007.

Kathi Maxwell says:
I still hear their meows at night.
I lost two of my cats. They were siamese. And special. Infact they were mother and son. How will I ever replace them? I can't. You can't replace a child. These were not animals they were my fur kids. And I cry myself to sleep each night at the passing of Shilo (mother) and Shanga (son) over someone's neglegence of pet food. Surely this should have been all natural ingredients. Would a person eat this stuff? This makes me mad, Cuz sure they recall the products but what about those that lost a pet because of this. I was feeding my cats Shilo and Shanga Special Kitty I purchased from Walmart.
A animal is not a pet. It is like Amanda said they are family. Shilo and Shanga would follow me around the house and sleep with me each night. I have other cats. But they are sick too.
I can't afford the vet bills. And no one will make arrangements for medical care for my cats. So am I suppose to just sit and watch them die over a companies neglect? This is so not right. There should be some sort of emegerency fund to help owners get vet assistants. Menu foods should pay this bill. Since it was there neglect that caused it.
Sorry but I am bitter about this.
Here is a link of Shanga.
