Beowulf is inspired from the epic poem of the same name. Travelling from afar, Beowulf comes to the aid of the King Hrothgar, who has offered half of his kingdom in gold to any man who can rid him of the monster,Grendel, that plagues his territory.

It is a pity that the execution was so poor, because the plot itself was quite good and wasted on this film, as was the all-star cast. Anthony Hopkins, John Malcovich, Angelina Jolie and Ray Winstone all played voices and the animated characters were modelled on their physical features. The movie would have been so much better if they had just used the real actors.

I can only guess computer animation purely for the sake of making a 3D movie. There is plenty of unnecessary panning, zooming and things flying at viewers which became a little irritating after a while. While CGI movies aren't inherently bad (see Shrek, Bee Movie, etc), the sophistication isn't yet there to implement more than cartoon-type movies. Beowulf makes savage attempts at realism and fails miserably. As it was, I felt like I was watching nothing more than a computer game, without any interactivity to make it interesting.

All in all, this movie was kind of dumb. I almost walked out on it, and I never walk out of a movie. I'll give it a 1.5 stars out of 5, purely because I liked the storyline.
