Pete's Movie Reviews: Donkey Punch

Ever heard of a Donkey Punch?
Three British girls from Leeds have headed off to Mallorca for fun in in the sun, and the four crewmen of a luxury yacht who pick them up in a bar, seem to be just what the doctor ordered. Taking the yacht out for a spin, a good dose of drugs, alcohol and sex turns from partying hard to tragedy for one of the girls. How these people deal with this unfortunate situation, soon turns into a nightmare for them all.
It was hard to believe this was a low-budget independant film, with great performances by its cast and good production quality and cinematography. It goes to show that you can make a great commercialy viable film without a blockbuster budget or an all star cast. Very much a character-driven plot, these characters and their reactions to the circumstances were all very believable.
There are highly explicit drug and sexual references, and so if that turns you off, you may want to skip it, but I didn't find them gratuitous, and they slotted in with the plot well.
The UK film industry is really turning out some great films these days, and this one is no exception. 4 stars out of 5.

It was showing at the Sydney International Film Festival. One of the best of the 15 or so I saw there. I can't wait for the DVD release.
