Pete's Movie Reviews: Dorm (aka Dek Hor)
40In this Thai movie, Chatree is starting the sixth grade at a new boarding school. His father insists it is to provide him with a better education, but Chatree believes he has ulterior motives, and isn't ready to forgive him for making him move away from home and all of his friends. The rough start he receives in the first days as 'the new kid' only strengthens his convictions in this respect, and fuels his anger and feelings of loneliness.
His schoolmates try to scare him with ghost stories and mysteries surround the principal, Miss Pranee. In Thai culture, where the existence of ghosts is nothing to joke about, they are successful in their attempts. Is the school really haunted? Not all his lost though, when he makes a new friend, Vichien, who takes Chatree under his wing. However, Vichien has secrets of his own, and it befalls Chatree to help his new best friend escape from a dark fate.
In the West it is rare to see a movie that is about children that definately isn't targeted at children, as 'Dorm' is. The audience that I watched it with included a number of kids who were taken to see it by their parents. Most of them were a little confused and/or scared by unfolding events. Nonetheless, it was a great film that I would recommend anyone to see if they can get their hands on it. 4 out of 5 stars.
