Pete's Movie Reviews: Get Smart
57
Maxwell Smart (Steve Carell) is analyst working for the secret government organisation, Control, who dreams of being promoted to field agent. When the nemesis of Control, Kaos, breaks into Control Headquarters, all of the existing field agents identities are compromised, except for Agent 99 (Anne Hathaway), and so Max gets his chance as Agent 86. Its up to the two of them to foil the evil machinations of Kaos alone.
I went into this movie expecting to be disappointed by this latest incarnation of a TV series I loved as a kid. I confess I was even closeminded. A bungling impersonation of Don Adams, with a superwoman 99 coming to save him? Giving it a blockbuster budget of course.
I'm happy to say I couldn't be more wrong. Steve and Anne were brilliant as Maxwell Smart and 99, managing to reflect the original characters very well, while giving them a facelift to fit into a more modern world. I expected the comedy element to just be a re-hash of old jokes, but that had been updated to suit a new audience. Of course you are going to get re-insertion of the old running gags, but they were incorporated well with their own fresh take, and not abused. There were some great laughs throughout this comedy. The plot was uncomplicated and perhaps a bit predictable, but it was executed well, and it was good to see 86 and 99 being a good complement to each other as partners. Each with their own talents and flaws.
This movie has something in it for all ages, whether they have seen the original series of 'Get Smart' or not. I'm giving it 3 out of 5 stars.
