Ari (Alex Dimitriades) is nineteen years old, gay and growing up in a traditional Greek family. Not only forced to lie about his sexuality to them, and his fellow Greek community, but has to challenge values he has been raised with, within himself. He deals with this by not dealing with it; taking drugs and indulging in meaningless sexual encounters, looking for his own kind of freedom.

This movie is one of those gems of Australian cinema, winning Australian movie of the year when it was released. It not only portrays the issues surrounding homosexuality in traditionalist Greek communities of Australia, but those of the broader youth culture as well, reconciling old values with new ones. Ana Kokkinos has really brought the book it was based on to life, with great direction and cinematography. At times its very brutal, raw and sexually explict, but never gratuitiously so. Alex Dimitriades really proved himself to be one of the great Australian actors of our time, even at this young age.

This is a must-see movie for all and not just a gay audience. A big 5 stars out of 5.
