The time is now 1957 and which is almost 20 years later than the events of the last movie. The enemies are Communists, instead of Nazis, and Indiana Jones finds himself on the quest for the Amazonian City of Gold to return a cystal skull and rescue his former collegue.

I was a bit torn about this. On the one hand I loved Indiana Jones, and wish there were more adventures. On the other hand, Harrison Ford is well past his prime for the role of Indiana Jones. It looked like its just trying to cash in on a new generation. It was gratifying to see that they didn't try to pretend he was still as young at least.

I suppose it falls under personal preference, but I've never been keen turning magic into science, especially in such a cliche way as it was done with Area 51 and Flying Saucers. The first three tended towards the idea there are some things more than cannot be described as anything but supernatural.

The new face of the enemy? A Russian dominatrix spy was poorly thought up, and badly presented. They may as well have just had Boris and Natasha from Rocky and Bullwinkle. I was a little surprised to see Cate Blanchett, who is an amazing actress, appearing as such a two-dimensional character with an atrocious Russian accent. In addition Many of the action scenes seemed designed around making a computer game for the XBox or PS3 with all of its puzzles and levels.

Maybe there were a few too many soft glows hiding the age, and crows feet, of Indiana Jones and Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen), who has made a comeback from the first movie.

So what did I see in this movie at all? Despite the lame plot it was good to see that the soul of action and adventure was still present. So many movies rely on too much CGI so much these days, which doesn't look real and makes it hard to suspend disbelief. Indiana Jones movies have always had plenty of live action and stunts. It also has to be said that the plot kept me guessing how this treasure hunt would pan out. It did maintain a high standard of plausibility within the framework of its own reality, which is really important to me.

I can't say I didn't enjoy the movie. You probably have to see it if you liked the first three movies. That said, I would have to describe it as the worst of them all. 3 stars.
