Pete's Movie Reviews: This is England
57
Slip into your Ben Sherman's and Doc Martens and experience Thatcher's Britain of 1983. War rages in the Falklands and members of the punk community are rising up to make a nationalist political statement.
Caught in the midst of this is Sean, a 12 year old boy whose father died in the Falkland Islands war, that gets picked on and bullied at school. A gang of (adult) punks take him under their collective wing, offering him a new kind of family. However, he soon put in the position of making a choice. Continuing to muck around and have fun with his new skinhead mates, or taking it a step further, adopting the cause of extremist British Nationalism as his own.
This is a really confronting and well crafted movie. It's easy to label these skinheads racists as evil, destructive, violent, brainwashing predators. However, this movie adds another dimension to these people. It doesn't seek to justify their behaviour, but it does make us see them as uncomfortably human. In many ways, not so different to the rest of us, with have the same needs and desires. People who need to love and be love, who believe in their causes as just, who have been hurt, and looking for that same sense of family. Somewhere to belong. It's easy to believe how Sean, essentially a good kid, could turn into an angry, violent, raciest, monster, the transformation tied in deeply with the love and grief surrounding his father.
It really deserved to wiin. Best Film in the British Independant Film award. 5 Stars.

Hope you can find it, though I felt a little unwell after seeing it, as did the friend I saw it with. We went into it, not knowing anything about it (we had intended to see another movie instead). Makes you realise how concepts of good and evil are comforting. :)

Wow. This sounds like a good film. Your hub caught my eye because I remember 80s Britain very well. For many it was the land of opportunity, but I guess not for all. I shall certainly watch out for this film.
