Dog Nail Clippers Friend or Foe?

In the dog lovers’ world, the task of trimming the nails is a dreaded one. There is the wrestling match that generally takes place as well as the archaic tools available. Tools that can cause pain or even serious injury to a beloved dog.

There are three main types of dog nail trimmer. Here we will look at each one and examine the pros and the cons.

Guillotine- This clipper operates much as its name suggests. The nail is inserted in an opening at the top and a blade comes down to cut the nail when the handle is depressed. Sounds kind of scary doesn’t it? The first issue with this style dog nail trimmer is that it is recommended for small dogs only. If you have a large breed the nail is to thick to fit in the opening and if you have both large and small dogs, which is quite common, then you will have to purchase separate dog nail trimmers.

Pliers- This is a trimmer style that sounds like it belongs in the toolbox, not a groomer’s box. The plier type dog nail trimmer has two blades with a cutout to surround the dog nail. The work like a typical pair of pruning shears. Push the handles together and it cuts the nail at whatever point you hold them. Sharp blades that can easily slip on the nail, especially if you have a squirmer. If they slip to low, you can cut into your dogs toe causing pain and injury.

Scissors- Similar to the plier style these work much like scissors, the blades are notched to curve around the nail. Like the pair above these trimmers can easily cut into the quick of your dogs nail. These are also not a good choice for large breeds since the nail is so thick there is more chance of splintering.

So let’s review most of the dog nail trimmers on the market today are made in a way that it is easy to cut into the quick. They are prone to getting dull and requiring sharpening or replacement blades. The use of a dull trimmer will most likely cause splintering, breaking, and uneven nails. Seems like there is a gap between need and product.

Today technology has brought you a better way. A rotary file that does not depend on any type of blade to trim your dogs nails. It works like this; a small motor spins an emery wheel very quickly. This emery wheel then removes thin layers of your dogs nail. Since this is a filing motion, the chances of any injury are nonexistent.

A protective cap guides you so that you do not file too deeply, and it catches all the nail shavings eliminating all the mess! That my friend is a great invention. You will be happier, your dog will be happier there simply is no downside.

Groomers and dog owners who have used the tool say it works like a dream. Their dogs were calmer while having their nails trimmed and the finished result was smooth and perfect. This is good news for dog lovers everywhere. Trim those troublesome nails without the worry and aggravation of traditional trimmers. This tool is especially helpful for dog nails that are black, black nails make it difficult to avoid the quick when using cutting tools. With pedi-paws, that is never an issue.

Well BlueSkyBright that's why these ones would come in handy for you. They do not actually cut the nail, they just file the nail down. It's really pretty cool.

a really good nail clipper is a whole world of difference for dogs! i should know because i have several dogs, and it hurts you too when you see them get hurt when you use a 'substandard' nail clipper on them... your pedi paws nail trimmer looks great, should make nail clipping a pleasurable experience for dogs!

The above comments are absolutely correct, you have to have a high quality clippers to clip your dogs nails. What a hassle with a substandard ones.

I should really try this product. I hate having to trim my dogs nails, I always feel like I am going to cut too short and hurt her. This product would avoid this!

What's that with "dogs" all the time?

Cats are "people" too ;).

And do they hate their nails clipped. Bet this tool will work like a charm as opposed to the old-way of doing things - cut, but not too short, not-too long, not for toooo long, and ooops - I just had to get away in the middle of things - meow!!!

I have a friend who owns three large dogs. He is spending a fortune at the vet whenever the dogs need their nails clipped. This is one tool he will certainly be only to eager to own. Thank you.

My puppy can't stand getting his nails clipped - and it drives me crazy. I've been taking him to the groomer, because I just can't get him to stay still long enough. I'll have to look more into this style of clipper.

It's hard for me to also cut my dog's nails. I've never seen nails like his and he's 16 years old. So anything I can do to help make my dog more comfortable is just fine by me, that's why I was pretty pumped when I found out about these.

I think this will work for any type of dog or cat.

There are also ways to help hold your dog down if they are not use to getting their nails trimmed.

I just brought my dog to the vet today, he has to get a tooth removed. Poor old man.

The idea of a painless way to trim my dogs nails is wonderful! But.. Pedipaws is meant for small dogs, I have Shepards and Labs. It really won't work well for the larger nails. Any chance they might come out with a stronger, larger model?
