Breeding Predators for Pets- Puppies- Dogs and Man Eating Monsters

What ever happened to that cute Puppy?
I was walking down the street one day, in the merry merry month of May, I was taken by surprise by a......terrifying 100 kilogram Man eater who had his eyes on me! There had been a thunder storm earlier and 'Max' had broken a one inch chain as though it was made of cotton wool.
I jumped a nearby fence and knocked frantically on the nearest door. The lady inside was all to familiar with 'Max' and let me inside. We peered at the huge beast through the window like two Deer looking at a Grizzly Bear. Max was owned by a group of Bikers down the road and had been cross bread from a Bull Mastiff a Rottweiler and a little bit of Bull terrier. When he was young he was the most gorgeous puppy you could imagine, and all the kids loved him. Two years later after some regular drunken beatings with a metal bar Max had developed the same attitude as his owners.
I am not blaming the breed of dog here because it plainly is not the dogs fault, it had no input at all to its existence. I am simply posing a few questions as a sometimes terrified pedestrian.
Firstly why are we breeding such large powerful animals? These furry friends have the potential to crush a full grown adult humans scull or rip their throat out? These creatures are comparable in strength and size to Lions, Panthers, small Bears and Crocodiles. We don't allow people to keep these animals as suburban pets so why let people breed their own large carnivorous predators.
The other question that needs to be asked is how suitable some individuals are to own these monster dogs? I mean to be honest these characters were pretty lousy parents so what chance did a pet have?
The statistics for Dog attacks in the US are as follows: The most recent official survey determined there were 4.7 million dog bite victims annually in the USA. 1,000 Americans per day are treated in emergency rooms as a result of dog bites. In 2007 there were 33 fatal dog attacks in the USA.
Maybe that's not a lot of deaths but 4.7 million bites is not that good. There are definitely some breeds of dogs which are far more dangerous than others and I won't stick my neck out and get in a huge dog breeding argument. There are however known issues, the primary ones being the Physical size of the dog, its jaw strength, length of teeth, its temperament and its all over physical strength and size.
Hands up those people who are scared of a Golden Retriever or a Labrador? If you want a good guard dog whats wrong with a Jack Russell? Brave, loud and very protective, but it can't kill you (unless you are very small and no small child should be left alone with a pet of any sort....except maybe a gold fish).
These big monster dogs are all too often an accessory like a tattoo or a big cubic inch chopper motorcycle. They are there to compensate for an under developed ego. Like the issue of gun laws, this topic is often an emotional one, but I can not see why. We simply don't need to add any more dangers to our kids lives and we shouldn't allow the people we share our environment with to do it either. These people use intimidation as part of their daily routine and their dogs are used as part of this regime. Its wrong in almost every way you look at it and I must stress again that its not the dogs fault.
We need to address and uphold council and state bylaws and start caring about what we breed and for what reason. I am an avid dog lover. Us humans have shared our lives with them for thousands of years. It is a healthy and natural partnership which has many benefits. Sometimes our relationship with our pets is the only connection we have to the natural world. A world we abuse, neglect and seek to control for all the wrong reasons.
