PEX (X stands for cross linking) or cross-linked polyethylene is an entity of water supply piping systems. It is seen as a breakthrough and revolutionizing substitute for other metal pipe alternatives used in plumbing and water supply systems.

A bit of history:

PEX was first used in 1930s. The first PEX was an irradiated extruded tube. The processing methods used then and until 1970s were very expensive. Variations of cross-linking methods existed, but none of them really delivered until 1974 when a silane-based process was patented (Huff! not many like history I know!!).

The resulting PEX (after cross linking) is very durable under extreme temperatures, chemical attack, creep formation, making PEX an excellent material for making tubes that are used to carry hot water and also other applications.

PEX’s flexibility and strength at temperatures ranging from freezing to above 200 degrees Fahrenheit make PEX an ideal material that can be used for hot and cold water plumbing systems, service lines, heating systems, melting systems, refrigeration systems.

PEX is excellent material for plumbing, because of the flexibility that it offers; PEX systems are usually quieter than the other counterparts. PEX systems have fewer joints and are easier to install which means that they are less costly when compared to other traditional piping materials. PEX is also used for underground cold-water service piping. But PEX should not be used for above ground outdoor applications, since PEX is meant to be used at particular surface temperatures, which are basically some recommendation from the manufacturers.

Yes!! PEX saves lot of money, since the installation is minimal and if you are thinking about redoing your basement piping this month end, then PEX is a screaming choice for you. Usually there will be some overheads like buying a crimping tool, but other than that, the installation requires very few directional fittings. Home run PEX plumbing systems can significantly reduce the energy consumption of the home. Direct lines can be customized to suite the requirements, hence will further save the time required to wait for the hot water. The faster supply reduces wastage of water also.

PEX is available through out USA and Canada; many retails also supply fittings and piping material. Piping and fittings are available in various sizes –1/4” to 1”. These are usually the standard CTS (copper tube size) when used in a trunk and branch installations.

Do think about using PEX next times, and happy “PEXING”!!
