US swimmer Michael Phelps has undoubtedly been the star of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He clocked up his 7th Olympic Gold medal in the 100 metres butterfly race. He beat Serbian Milorad Cavic by 0.01 of a second. Their times were 50.58 seconds and 50.59 respectively. Could any race be closer than that?

Michael Phelps

Milorad disputed the judges decision and a video of the event had to be viewed to confirm the final positions. In the video below the final order is shown quite clearly.

There is only 0.01 of a second between the first two!

Michael Phelps clearly touches the wall, just ahead of the Serbian. This was the last individual event for helps in these Olympics. He said afterwards that he had no idea it was so close as he was just trying to battle the pain he felt in his muscles and give it everything he had.

This particular race is one that will go down in Olympic history as one of the closest and most exciting event ever,

The full results for the 100 metres butterfly race were:

1st. Michael Phelps (US) 50.8 seconds

2nd Milorad Cavic (Serbia) 50.9 seconds.

3rd Andrew Lauterstein (Australia) 51.1 seconds

Michael Phelps has one event left: The 4x100 metre medley relay. The US is expected to win this one! However, nothing will be certain until Saturday night.
