Phobias: Strange fears we can't always explain.
77
Everyone's afraid of something.
Whether it be changing jobs, or not being financially secure, or having your child abducted, everyone has something to be afraid of in this world. Most fears are easily justified. It could be the number of car accidents reported on a particular highway section, or the startling amount of gunshots in a neighborhood. It could be the amount of hurricanes in the south, or the staggering number of young adults being diagnosed with Diabetes. A lot of things scare us.
But some things are just absurd.
A phobia is an irrational fear of something. Meaning, you're scared of something that you have no real reason to be afraid of. Phobias are psychological phenomenas that grip many people; there is no little bubble of specific phobias in one place. Almost everyone has one. A lot of people are able to overcome them. It's a long list, but it's funny as heck.
People fear the strangest things. And while phobias are irrational, they are hard to overcome. This is my short list of personal phobias (I promise it's very short).
Aichmophobia, Athazagoraphobia, Cleisiophobia, Emetophobia, Harpaxophobia, Helminthophobia, Homophobia (Fear of sameness, monotony or of homosexuality or of becoming homosexual - I can't stand having monotony in life. I have no problem with gays.), Iatrophobia, Isolophobia, Kenophobia, Maieusiophobia, Nosocomephobia, Pediculophobia, Pharmacophobia (Fear of taking medicine. I can take certain meds, but I can't swallow pills. I just can't.), Taphophobia, Tomophobia.
Okay, so it's not exactly that short. Most of those are relatively rational, and some weren't included in the funny list. But those are my phobias, and I'm not afraid to tell them to you.
Got a funny phobia? Share your stories with us! Think there's one I missed on the list? Share that, too! Comments are always welcome!

Found a spelling error? Don't blame me entirely; that phobia list had a bunch of 'em, and I tried to fix the ones I caught.

i have a bad fear of sex such as the sperm and dicks dose this mean i am a lezbian
please reply as soon as possible!
Ellie: Clowns is an all-too-common one, and I have discovered that a lot of girls claim this fear for attention, generally teens. Genuine fears of clowns are out there, and I'm not saying you don't have it, but as I stated, it's extremely common. It's like being afraid of the dark or the boogey-man for children.
Ruby: There actually is a fear for that one, but I didn't put which one it is because I tried to keep the list PG/PG-13 at best. It's one of those (mature content) ones. I only put it up because it made me lawl. No, it does NOT make you a lesbian, it just means you're going to have some issues conceiving children until you get over your phobia. You can always seek professional help if you can't conquer your fear on your own.
Are you sure it's a fear, and not just an anxiety?
Just like Ellie I have a fear of reading out loud in front of a public. I can speak fine but I have panic attacks and feel like of running out of air when I read. Why does this fear have no name? I've searched but its not listed anywhere.
I'm too lazy to log in... lol
Allison, try googling "Fear of public speaking". Your fear could also stem from being afraid of getting laughed at (for messing up or any other reasons that may occur), being stared at, and/or being the center of a large group's attention. Personally, I don't have a problem reading aloud or speaking aloud, but that could be because I have a high Charisma score...
Aha, I made a D&D joke! I'm such a nerd. xD
I hope that helped. ^_^
I'm a 13 year old girl. I have over 15 different phobias. I need to know what some are though. I couldn;t find them on the list above. I have a SEVERE phobia of roller coasters, clowns, lack of oxygen, paranism (i think is how you spell it), and trust. Do you happen to know what you call any of these phobias?
Gabrielle, my best suggestion would be to use Google. That's how I found a list of phobias, and where I found the ones that made me giggle. I actually posted a link to the list I found up in Acknowledgements. That would be the best place to look. I don't know all the phobias by heart; that would be kind of crazy of me. o_O
The best I can tell you is, for your rollercoaster fear, look under heights and speed; for the oxygen thing, look for suffocation; and I have no idea what paranism is. Trust is more of a personal issue than a fear, and would be something you should consider counseling for. Fear of clowns is fairly common, and one I tend to give girls crap for because a lot of them are scared only because others are scared, which leads to a sheep mentality that annoys the living daylights out of me. Not saying you're like that, just giving you a simple fact. I'm sure you have a valid reason.
The list I got from Google is here: www.phobiasonline.com/Phobia_List_A-G.html
I hope this helps.
hey not knoken ur fun but im aracnephobic, you kow the fear of spides and its may be funny to u but its not so funny to me ho ever the rest of the list is pretty funny i injoyed it so dont take what i said in a bad way
Hey, don't sweat it. I'm arachnaphobic too. Spiders scare the living daylights out of me. BLEH! I used to wake up my dad in the middle of the night and have him kill spiders on the ceiling, no matter what size they were. 2:30 in the morning I'd go into his room, at the wonderful age of 19, and go, "Daaaaaaddyyyyyyyyy, come kill a spiiiiiiideeeeerrrrrrrr..."
... Yes, I am seriously that freaked out by them that I revert back to childish whining...
here's another REALLY funny phobia :D -
Anatidaephobia- the fear of being watched by a duck.
... You must be lying about that one. There is no way that's a real phobia. No way in hell. xD
Tori's right. Its a legit fear, my neighbor has it.
o.o
Daaaaaayum. That's frickin' weird. Well, thanks for the insight, Tori and Katie! :D
