Where Does Phone Marketing Have Merit for Internet Network Marketers Using the New Model of Attraction Marketing?
62
A Brief History about Phone Marketing
It was first documented by Vance Packard when he wrote "Naked Society" in 1964 about a Ford executive who conducted a massive and successful telephone campaign. The book documents 20 million phone calls.
Telephone marketing was born, also known as telemarketing.
The lesson learned was this...deliver a consistent message to a generally uniform audience and the response will be measurable. You all understand the law of averages i.e. make a 1000 telephone calls and get 20 responses, equals 2%.
Telemarketing became the new direct marketing. But phone calls during evenings and weekends, scripts that challenged every objection and high pressure soon branded telemarking as something to loathe. (Not to mention phone banks - raise your hand if you worked at a phone bank in college:).
It was a quite a quick and dirty road which led to "Do Not Call" lists. We've all dealt with our share of "hungry" cold calling network marketers, telemarkers and politically or community motivated fundraising volunteers.
And along with the advent of cell phones, and the massive abundance of technology to enable our communication, we screen our calls, or simply turn our phones off. There is a long list of reasons why the phone has both evolved and de-volved in our society.
For Internet Network Marketers Using the New Attraction Marketing Model, the Phone Still Has It’s Place, But Not Like Before
Traditional network marketers create a names list, buy generic leads, cold call and follow up, follow up, follow up. It's not an effective model of marketing anymore. Not for most network marketers.
If it is effective, there is consensus that it isn't fun or seen as a professional means to do business. I've never heard of doctors, lawyers and educators cold calling for business. Their business and the work they do in business markets itself because it solves a problem or fills a need. This is exactly what internet network marketers must do.
If you're just starting to generate your own leads, or have some old lists that are gathering dust, here are some compelling reasons to consider picking up the telephone.
Don't feel very confident on the telephone? Work with your upline to assist with making three-way phone calls after you've sponsored someone new.
This is what could be done AFTER the person has already opted-in for more information at one point or another.
More Than Meets The Phone - Attraction Marketing Using the Consultative Approach
- Consistent Message
The communication is consultative. Not scripted. Yet consistent from prospect to prospect.
- Interactive Marketing Medium
The phone is still the most effective instantaneous two way communication with a prospect. Every article, email or video is one sided communication.
- Picking up the telephone is a means to identify the serious decision makers.
When you're on the phone, you can determine real interest or inquiry. Set follow up appointments, take orders, and provide information about webinar/seminars.
- Identify wants and needs, fears and painful experiences.
Using the telephone allows the immediate ability to confirm and affirm. This is the easiest way to respond to questions or objections.
- Build Your Brand
You never get a better chance to make a first impression, especially in this new model of attraction marketing because they've made the inquiry first. In some cases, they're already familiar with you and your message. In other cases, it's a consultative courtesy to provide service and solutions. This builds trust.
Some may think that your brand might be compromised by a phone call. Not so. I'd argue that when handled correctly, your brand can only be enhanced by telephone communication.
- Future Marketing Intelligence
You also have to see yourself as gathering data (notes from the field) that can be quickly used and effectively marketed to your target audience.
Attraction marketing phone follow up is said to produce about 1,000% more than permission based email blasts.

Need Assistance Setting Up Your Attraction Marketing on the Web?
With so many different internet network marketing training programs and systems being heavily promoted on the web, it can be hard to determine which one will work best for you.
Here's my advice - Choose a program or system that is completely unrelated to your network marketing opportunity. It needs to be generic. And the primary focus, which is to say, the end means, should be on personal branding and lead generation.
But that alone is not enough - This generic internet attraction marketing training should over-deliver on value and visually show you step by step in tutorial-like fashion beginning with simple, basic stuff and advancing from there.
Once you have found those things, there is one last criteria - Find someone to work with you, and advocate that you get the most out of the generic attraction marketing training. This person should be able to provide you with a clear and measurable road map to get the most out of the training so you reach your goals.
Once you've found those things, the rest is simply working your own plan.
You can get that kind of help, the kind of help you need to learn internet network marketing in a step by step, click for click visual training wtih a mentor teacher/coach looking over your shoulder and there when you raise your hand for assistance.

@C Doug Mah,
Thank you...I think you're the one who has put it all in perspective. Nice compliment to my article.
You're correct about combining a personal telephone call with your internet and web activities. It is all about that high touch with high tech.
Eric
Hey Eric,
So many people think internet network marketing implies a complete disconnect with your prospects, as if the whole process is automated. Nothing could be further from the truth.
With internetwork marketing, you will eventually be speaking to your most interested prospects one-on-one, and most of them will probably NOT be face-to-face, so your phone skills need to be sharper than ever.
Nice article, thanks for raising this point.
Lane
@Lane,
You're so right Lane. There is no question that we will be on the phone. Internet network marketing, any online business venture, will always come down to providing value, services and solutions...Often times, this means picking up the phone and connecting. Thank you for your insight and taking the action to post a comment.
Eric
You make some great points Eric. I like the mini history lesson too.
You are so right on the consensus that cold-calling is not fun. This has led to the fear of picking up the dreaded 100lb phone. It doen't need to be that way. When you have attracted someone to you via your content on the internet you are speaking with a whole new breed of prospect. They are happy to hear from you and often times thank you for calling. We must not let our past experiences get in our way.
Hey Eric,
Great hub, timely and a topic that is difficult for most Network Marketers to overcome.
Sometimes it is the fear of rejection that scares people, but I think that this fear more comes from not feeling like they have the expertise to present themselves as a professional in the industry.
That is what I love about Renegade University. As people learn, expand and begin to see success, their ability and expertise grows the point of solid confidence in themselves. That is what overcomes fear. Plus, as others have shared, in the new methods of attraction, whom you are communicating with no longer falls into the stranger category and the tension of cold calling is finally broken.
Great stuff Eric, thanks for sharing,
Mike Witt

Very timely advice! Really helps to know that even though we learn to automate our lead generation, they are human beings we are dealing with after all! Human beings need other human beings to interact with- we are social creatures. The phone is definately the way- and with telecommunications advancements like skype, it makes it viable to run a truly global business (ask me, I am from South Africa and generating leads from all over the world!)
Attraction marketing is making my phone experiences enjoyable. Prospects are open, receptive and grateful for the contact! What a difference from the previous cold calls I was making.
And you, Eric are a true inspiration to me. Your content gives and gives. Thank you once again for this hub.

Yes, no need to be afraid of the phone when you know the person on the other will be grateful to receive you call. These kind of connections can be powerful in the sense that it is often difficult to get successful marketers on the phone. Some people need that connection to be inspired to move forward. Some need just a little bit of assistance to turn the corner.
@Tania - Thank you for your complimentary comments.
@Mike - I do agree that the training at Renegade Professional instills a certain confidence, and with confidence, so many more doors are open.

Very informative article. It ties in the best of the old school methods with cutting edge attraction marketing. The consultative approach and conceptual selling works anywhere as you are putting the customer/prospect first and looking out for their needs. And by combining a personal telephone call with your internet and web activities, you combine high touch with high tech.
Thanks for putting this all in perspective.
Cheers! C Doug Mah
