Photography Fundamentals - Composition

We will be talking about Photography Fundamentals - Composition. This is a continuation from the article Photography Fundamentals for Beginners. You may want to read that if you had not done so.

What is Composition

Composition refers to how the elements of a photograph fits together.

Shooting a beautiful object is not a good photograph. Shooting it in a way to make the object stands out is a good photograph.

Rule of Thirds
Rule of Thirds

Rule of Thirds

Rule of Thirds is the golden rule for composition in photogrpahy.

Here is how it works.

Draw  a rectangle representating picture space. In it draw horizontal & vertical lines to divide them into 9 equal parts.

The 4 points where the lines intersect are the best places to put the main object of the photograph.

If the main object is on the top left third, a secondary object can be placed on the lower right thrid to balance it.

How to Apply the Rule

Like what is displayed on the sample photo, the tree (main object) is roughly on the right thirds.

Here is a simple guide on how to apply the rule:

For Portrait, place the main subject at the Centre of the photo, or on either the right or left thirds lines.

For Landscapes, can use 1/3 sky, 2/3 land, or 2/3 sky, 1/3 land, or 1/2,1/2 for symmetry.

I like the simplicity of the discussion on Rule of Thirds. Great hub!
