Creating a logo that has a transparent background is important to ensure that you can use your logo in a number of different places where different colored backgrounds may be used (e.g. websites, company brochures, presentations, etc.)

This hub page will show you in a few simple steps how to create a logo with a transparent background in Adobe Photoshop.

Note: this tutorial assumes that you already have a logo ready to use.

Step 1: Open your logo

Start up Photoshop and open the image file that contains your logo (File > Open).

Name the layer on which your image is stored as "logo".

Step 2: Create a new transparent layer

Once your image file has opened, create a new transparent layer (Layer > New > Layer).

Ensure that this layer is placed underneath your "logo" layer.

Name the layer "background".

Step 3: Remove the logo background

Using either the "Magic Wand" tool or the "Lasso" tool, go to the "logo" layer and select the area of the image that you want to remove (that is, the background of the image).

When you have finished selecting the area to remove, press the delete button on your keyboard.

This should remove the background from your logo and instead you should see the transparent layer that you placed underneath (represented by the black and white boxes that look like a chess board).

Step 4: Save the image.

Very simple step - once your happy with how the logo looks, save it to your hard drive to ensure that the changes you've made are stored.

It's probably best to save it as a different file name, so that you still have access the original source logo file should you need to make changes to the in future.
