Piano lessons for kids are quite different compared to piano lessons for grownups. Adults are more focused to learn to play piano while kids are less motivated especially during piano practice sessions.

There are few effective ways to encourage kids to practice at home with their baby grand piano. Giving prizes or rewards is acceptable but it would only be effective for a moment.

There has to be a real motivating factor to be considered...

1. Assist them in choosing songs they want to learn. Kids enjoy practicing piano with their choice of music which they are most familiar with like disney theme songs, pop songs, etc. Most piano lessons use classical pieces which kids are not that familiar with. If they choose the song they want to learn, they are most likely to practice more.

2. Parents and students should be responsible for the practice sessions. Give students a log sheet to be followed strictly. If a student fails to practice for more than three weeks, teacher may talk to the parents and the student informing them how serious it is. Parents should help their kids to fully understand the importance of constant practice in order to master their craft. Parents should help their kids to know how to prioritize their task. If the problem continues, both the parents and the student must be informed that they will be taken out of the student's list and be placed on the waiting list for the next school opening. Parents should realize that it's just a waste of money and effort to continue with the piano lessons if the student is not interested at all.

3. Let students watch some short videos during study sessions. Choose videos from Youtube featuring children playing piano. Just type in "child prodigy" keywords when searching videos in Youtube. Young students will be delighted to see children playing piano perfectly and they will become more motivated and inspired to learn to play piano.

At this point students must be informed how piano experts put a great deal of effort into playing piano perfectly. It is not something students can achieve overnight to learn to play piano.
