Piano Movers
56Are Piano Movers Necessary?
When it comes to moving a piano, most people make one of three choices.
- They move the piano themselves.
- They hire a regular furniture moving company.
- Or, the hire professional piano movers.
Usually, those that make the first choice, end up wishing they had gone for the last. You see, moving a large instrument is not an easy task. OK - that is probably as obvious as the nose on my face but nonetheless it is a hard concept to grasp. Why? Because most people, myself included, are looking for ways to save a buck and when it comes to relocating the costs can add up quickly.
Now, moving a piano without help is not recommended. The instrument is not only heavy, but it is also an extremely irregular shape - which makes it hard to get a hold of. Making this choice can result in damage to the piano and damage to the pianist.
The second choice - hiring a furniture moving company - is a step in the right direction. Some companies can handle the task well. They have extensive experience and know what to do. The important thing here is to ask about that experience. Get references and recommendations specific to the piano - not just to the moving capabilities in general. I know it's a pain but doing the homework of thoroughly checking out the organizations claims is so worth it when it comes to moving day.
Finally, enlisting the services of professional piano movers - is probably the best choice. Once again, one can never be too careful and making those reference calls is so totally key. A reputable company will be able to provide good references. We all know the old saying - "Jack of all trades and master of none." This truly sums up why it is a good idea to hire a company that only deals with this type of instrument. They should be able to do the job and do it well. A professional piano moving company will not only show up with an adequate and experienced crew. They will know exactly how to maneuver this large item through tight doorways, and corners and up and down stairs. They will have the right equipment to ensure a safe move. In addition - they will also know how to store the "old ivories". If the move spans over many days then a sensitive instrument needs to be kept in a temperature controlled warehouse that is clean and dust free. This is one thing that many people do not take into consideration when planning a move.
The choice is up to the owner but the cost and benefit need to be taken into consideration.
Cost Considerations
The cost that a professional company will charge varies and depends on several factors.
- More well reputed companies with excellent track records may tend to charge more than newcomers to the industry. This does not necessarily ensure quality - so checking references is still a must!
- Always ask whether they charge by the hour or whether there is one fee for the entire move. Check the fine print for an extras or add-ons that will add to the overall cost.
- The location will also make a difference. If there are a lot of obstacles or small spaces then that will add to the fee.
- Believe it or not - seasonality comes in to play. Certain times of year are busier than others.
- The instrument itself determines the charge as well. If it requires special handling the the cost will go up.

Thanks! I've also moved a piano from room to room and actually did enlist movers to do the job. Too heavy to do myself. :-)
