Mounting Rifle Scopes can become a chore when navigating through the world of available rifle scope rings and bases. Two common questions when it comes to mounting rifle scopes are; “Will my Weaver style rings fit a Picatinny rail/base?” and “Will my Picatinny rings fit a Weaver base?” The short answer to these questions is “Maybe” and to understand this answer, you must first understand the differences.

Historically, Optics and accessories manufacturers developed their own systems for attaching to firearms. In the mid 90s, there was an explosion of optical technology and the military was looking for standard mounting system to attach the accessories to firearms quickly and easily while maintaining accuracy.

Enter the Picatinny Arsenal. The Arsenal was tasked with developing the standardized system for mounting optics and other accessories. In doing so, they gathered various mounting systems available at the time, measured them, and averaged the measurements. They added some tweaks and modifications and the MIL-STD 1913 rail was born.

So where does this diversion take us? The dimensions that Picatinny settled on are very similar to those of Weaver. The difference being that the recoil lug, that is the crossways slots in the mounts, is larger with the Picatinny. So, in general, Weaver rings will fit on a Picatinny base whereas Picatinny rings are not likely to fit on a Weaver Base. Where this does not hold true is with rings that straddle the base and do not lock within the recoil lug and there are some Picatinny rings that are thin enough to fit within the recoil lug.

When ordering shooting accessories on line, the safe choice when mounting your rifle scopes are to, where possible, remain consistent. Picatinny Rings matched with Picatinny rails/bases and Weaver Rings matched with Weaver bases. Otherwise you risk sending parts back and forth. Not only does that cost shipping but it takes time that you could be out shooting.
