I recommend staying near the center of the city as it allows easy access to the Subte (subway). Retiro and Recoleta are the nicest neighborhoods for hotels. Both neighborhoods have ample access to the subway.

I highly recommend renting an apartment if you will be there for more than a week. Apartments can be had at bargin prices, they have their own kitchens, and can sleep whole families.

Other famous neighborhoods are Palermo, San Telmo, and La Boca, but there are dozens of neighborhoods in the city and they each are worth seeing.
