Skip the Sugary Pastries!
I know, I do it, too! In a hurry, grab a pastry and off we go to start our day! But, in a few minutes, we'll hit the crash after the sugar rush, and will want to eat again.
Please yourself and your kids with this bacon and cheese turnover made from pizza dough instead. It's easier than you think!
We're trying to trim our expenses and have found that for convenience, not satisfaction we eat out way too much. All the drinks, snacks and grab and go foods are very expensive!
If we change our habits, it will be just like finding money!
Gather these ingredients, and in 20 minutes, you'll have a nutritious breakfast that will satisfy you for hours.
Begin with:
- refrigerated pizza dough, 1 10-oz package
- 2 tablespoons low-sugar orange marmalade (try this; substitute other flavors later, I think you'll find this is delicious!)
- 3/4 cup cooked ham, chopped
- 3/4 cup shredded Swiss cheese (3 ounces)
- 1/4 cup thinly sliced green onions
- dash of pepper, milk for brushing over turnover, and seasme seeds for sprinkling
Procedure:
- Line a baking sheet with foil sprayed with cooking spray. Set aside. Unroll the pizza dough onto a lightly floured surfce. Roll dough into a 12 inch square and spread with orange marmalde, evenly. Cut dough into 9 squares, about 4 inches.
- In a bowl, stir together ham, cheese, and green onions. Place about 3 tablespoons filling on each dough square. Sprinkle each lightly with pepper. Fold one corner of each square over filling to opposite corner. Press edges with a fork to seal. Prick tops of turnovers with the fork.
- Place the turnovers on prepared baking sheet. Brush with milk and sprinkle with poppy or seasme seeds. Bake in pre-heated 400F oven for 12 minutes or until golden brown. Filling may leak out slightly.
- Serve warm with fruit and juice.
See, easy!!! When you do it more than once, you can pop them in the oven in about 3-4 minutes of prep time.
If that doesn't satisfy you, how about these Breakfast Tacos?
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup finely chopped celery
- 1/2 cup finely chopped green bell pepper
- 1 cup chopped cooked ham
- 1 8 ounce can crushed pineapple well drained, or 3/4 chup finely chopped apple.
- 1 chup shredded cheddar cheese
- 8 - 10 6 inch whole wheat or plain flour tortillas, warmed slightly.
Procedure:
- Spray a nonstick skillet with cooking spray. Heal skillet over medium heat. Cook celery and sweet pepper in hot skillet until tender, stirring occasionally. Stir in ham and pineapple. Cook and stir until heated through. Remove from heat, sstir in cheee.
- Spoon about 1/4 cup filling in the center of each warmed tortilla, roll up and serve.
These recipes are low in fat and sugar, much healthier choices for snack or breakfast time. You can even chop all these ingredients in the evening, seal and refrigerate and cut prep time for those rushed mornings.
Save money, save calories, increase nutrition!! Are you ready for some breakfast??

Wow this is a great idea and seems really easy. There are so many variations that you can do here too.
Hi SWP, good, I'm hoping it'll turn out good for you, I think the filling could be individualized perfectly!! =))
Hi Triplet Mom, Yep, it's easy and any filling, even fruit and cream cheese would be good. =))
Deff bookmarking this one , looks great.
HI, Hawkesdream....good this IS easy - all my recipes have to have that requirement -- I'm not a fancy cook.....==))
Darn you are a great cook. You manage to write all these hubs, you have links to all these other sites, you are Super woman truly.
So when can I come over for dinner?
Cindy you and all the hubbers are welcome anytime...what a huge potluck that would be!! Couldn't we write the ultimate HubNugget!!!
Hi Blondepoet, I am busy - way too much so...and right now, my brother is working hard moving our sites, so they may be down or looking strange over the next few days as they slide into cyber space and get beamed into a new location...I hope they land with the right parts. My luck, parenting will end up in the barn. and barkaboutyourdog may end up in the chicken coop.
=)))
Haha my Grandma believe it or not got married in a chicken coop. !!!
Now that's a first! Very memorable!!! I tend to make pets out of hens. This transferring of sites is quite a job, thank god my brother does it. I just point and say "yeah, over there, that looks good." and then nod wisely and say "I see...." even tho I don't. LOL
I like this but I can't eat ham or have meat and cheese together - do you have a possible substitute? Thanks.
I'd op for a pineapple (or your favorite fruit maybe apple?) and cheese...or even chopped peppers, and mushrooms? Mushroom and cheese would be super and sprinkle pineapple over the top? I bet that'd work!! =)))
Hey thanks - all great ideas. Thank you so much.
Yum...it's all making me hungry. I love to cook when the weather is crazy, like raining, snowing, windy storms....LOL I'm weird....=)))
marisuewrites great hubs! sorry, you've probably heard that one often, but it is worth repeating. Really enjoyed this one - great breakfast idea! I bet even my non-breakfast eaters wouls like this one! Thanks.

I like your idea. I think I might try it with turkey bacon as it does sound yummy. I never understood why they always push the sugary pastries on us because these are just way too sweet. I actually ended up liking Chinese pasteries though, which had a good balance between savory and sweet, and some are more on the savory side.
