Everyone loves their pets, they are a part of your family. To some people, their pet is like their child. Unfortunately, not everyone feels warmly to pets. Things happen in life, things that won't allow your pets to be with you for a time.

Should this ever happen to you, there are options to finding a place for your pet while you get yourself situated. Typically, you don't want to leave your pet somewhere for longer than a couple of months, for no other reason then the expense of it.

There are many different types of doggy day cares and boarding kennels. This option though is better on the short term, as they get very expensive very fast. If you do choose a kennel, investigate them a bit first. Are they certified? How many pets do they have on the premises at one time? What is the person to pet ratio? (you don't want a kennel that has a ratio of 1 person to 20 or more dogs, too many pets per person means that your pet is probably not getting interacted with). Shots are a must, make sure they require up to date shots on every pet that is on the premises, that way your pet stays healthy. Also, make sure it is close enough in location that you are able to visit your pet frequently.

Another option is finding a person that does boarding in their own home. You can accomplish this by looking on places like Craigslist (you could even post a listing asking for someone to do this). Should you choose this option, you need to meet with the applicants. Visit their homes, let them meet your pet (dogs are a very good people reader, if the dog does not like the person, there is a reason why), get their references, find out their prices.

The third option is finding a friend, someone that likes dogs and would be willing to help you out. Do not abuse this option. Offer to pay them decently, offer to provide the food, and make sure they know that you will come over frequently to take the dog on walks. Abusing friendship over a pet sitting job, is very often heard of, and a good way to ruin that friendship forever.

Check out all the available options that you can. If people looked harder at the options available to them, fewer dogs would end up in the shelters. You have a pet, now be responsible and take care of them properly.

I wish I had read this first before keeping that puppy! I might have made the guy pay me! Excellent article BTW.

LOL, thanks.

Yes, if you watch someone's pet for them, definitely do not do it for free! :O) On top of the fact that you get nothing for your time and energy, you are telling him that you will always do stuff at no cost to him. :O)
