As a fervent proponent of maintaining our current generation’s masculinity, it’s important to step back and take a look at one of the more rugged aspects of men’s apparel: PLAID. Yes ladies and gents, you heard correctly… PLAID. Who wants to wear $150 Jeans and a button-up shirt when all you really want is something that screams “YES, I ROCK BALLS.” No other material can do this, with the obvious exception being animal hide. A man by the name of Maddox hits the nail on the head in his book, The Alphabet of Manliness, when he states:

“Lumberjacks wear a distinctive uniform that is both sharp and functional. Unlike the flowery patterns found on wallpaper and women’s clothing, lumberjacks have opted for a block-shaped pattern on their clothing called “plaid.” The pattern consists of perpendicular bands of color (usually alternating strips of red and black) and clashes with every other style of clothing and color known to man. Though plaid has its critics, even the most ardent opponents are hard pressed to deny that a plaid shirt has an unspoken classiness to it. Plaid is unapologetically manly because it stands diametrically opposed to all shapes and patterns found in nature. Things in nature tend to be organic and unorganized. Plaid stands in sharp contrast, being rigid and calculated. It’s a subtle nod toward man’s ability to rationalize and think.”

That said, I think it’s time for a wardrobe change…. or rather, a lifestyle change. Just recently I started wearing only plaid, listening only to heavy metal, watching only zombie movies, drinking, fighting and it has worked wonders. So where can I get a manly plaid shirt you might ask? The answer is simple; your nearest outdoors store or Cabellas magazine. Shopping online is definitely unacceptable when it comes to purchasing manly attire. So bust out your wallet, and shell out that $15-$30 bucks for a sharp plaid shirt. You (and the ladies) won’t be disappointed.
