You don't have to be from the South to enjoy a Derby wedding. Whether you're from Kentucky, love horses or just looking for a fun theme for your outdoor wedding, using the Kentucky Derby as the theme for your wedding can create a memorable event that's truly unique. And you don't even have to have it at the Kentucky Derby Museum. There are plenty of ways to create the look and feel of this Southern tradition just about anywhere. So, let's get off to the races with these great wedding planning ideas!

Horses: Images of horses running at Churchill Downs are a great inspiration for the groom's cake (which can be made in the shape of a horse or horseshoe), invitations, save-the-date announcements and wedding programs. You can even have an ice sculpture of a horse or jockey on the buffet table. For a more subtle sign, give horseshoe cuff links as groomsmen gifts.

Mint Juleps: The signature drink of the day, this concoction of fine bourbon, mint, and sugar is served icy cold in a silver cup. For non-drinkers, try pouring ginger ale and a tablespoon or two of mint syrup over ice and garnish with a fresh mint sprig. Of course, you could also serve a cool mint iced tea instead.

Derby Hats: Steeped in Southern tradition, if there's one thing the Derby is known for besides horses, it's hats! As the bride, you may not wish to wear one, but let your guests know ahead of time so that they can. Not only will it help shield them from the sun, but your photos will be amazing. If you can, ask the men to wear seersucker suits, as well.

Favors: Step into the winner's circle with these first-place summer wedding favors. Even if you're not planning a derby-themed wedding, mini mint julep cup tea lights are an excellent wedding favor. Simple and sophisticated, the beaded rim puts these favors in a class by themselves. Because you'll most likely be outside, fans are another useful wedding favor. You can choose to print your wedding program on a fan or provide guests with silk accordion fans to keep cool.

Red Roses: Because the Kentucky Derby has been called "The Run for the Roses”, it just makes sense to incorporate red roses throughout the day—in the bridesmaids bouquets and wedding centerpieces for the reception. You can even drape a horseshoe made of red roses at the entrance to the wedding to really set the mood.

Trumpet: Having a trumpet player perform the “Call to Post” just as the ceremony is about to begin will add a unique touch to your wedding that is sure to be remembered.

Kentucky Cuisine: Not only known for fried chicken thanks to the Colonel, Kentucky has plenty of regional favorites that can be enjoyed at your wedding. From burgoo to Derby Pie, you'll discover quite a few signature dishes for your guests to enjoy.

Whether your wedding is the first Saturday in May, or at another time of the year, using the Kentucky Derby as your inspiration will help you to create a wedding that is gracious, lovely, and utterly charming. You can't really ask for more than that in a wedding theme!
