I think that it is important in these modern times that people begin to have frank discussions about what is going on around them.
People make decisions that affect our lives, our futures and the lives of our future generations all the time and for the most part, we let them.
We trust them.
...but should we trust them?
Genetically modified foods...their implications...and the fact that we often ingest them without even knowing it.
Foods with growth hormones in them. Foods with other genetic alterations that make them resistant to stuff. Foods with antibiotics in them. Overuse of antibiotics has been shown to produce drug resistant bacterias.
The "I am Legend" effect.
Could we be changing our environment too much...Could our environment one day start fighting back...turning unpredictable?
Are we safe?
Should we take more precautions?
Should we be more educated about these things?
Regardless of anything else, we ought to know what is inside the foods we eat for our own health and benefits. In order to avoid allergic reactions for one.
We need to document these things some how, at least until we know for sure what it is doing to our bodies and to our environments.
Granted, there are a lot of positive things about genetically modified foods, such as those foods that are genetically altered to include certain vitamins to improve health in 3rd world countries.
We shouldn't confuse the good with the bad, and that is another reason why knowledge is important. I heard that protestors vandalized an entire cornfield, because they thought it was growing genetically modified corn. This is not the way to go about solving these problems.
The fear of genetically modified foods is warranted, in my opinion. It's a relatively new science with strange implications. When you hear stories of tomatoes being implanted with fish DNA to keep them from freezing and apples being modified to taste like pears, you begin to wonder what this is all about? Are these scientists just playing God? Not to mention the issue with our environment, we run the risk of endangering entire species and poisoning our ecosystem when we make these modifications to the organisms that reside in that environment.

Bravo Dutch. This is a departure from your “usual” Hubs. I’m glad to see something of substance. However, please don’t imagine that there is anything “good” about GMF or the corporations that “create” them. Their sole purpose is to completely monopolize the production of food for the entire world, for profit of course. Something quite ironic here. One of the best graphic images I have encountered was right here on one of your Hubs. I believe it was something to do with Soviet art. “Buy or Die” was the message that went with the graphic of a skeletal child picking through some scraps of garbage looking for anything to eat. That is the goal of companies like Monsanto. Only the superior, wealthy, white fascist capitalists are worthy of good food and a healthy environment. If, by some wild chance, you haven’t seen this please take the time to watch and listen.http://wideeyecinema.com/?p=105

Great hub, so many relevant questions that should make people think and talk about. I for instance was always against GMF even though having several teachers (food engineers) who thought/taught there was no problem in genetically modifying foods no matter they were plants or animals. Several years have passed since then and I´m still against it but I also realize I (we) can´t do much to revert the actual situation :(
