Playstation 2 Repair: What You Can Do and What You Shouldn't

Did your Playstation 2 give up on you? For hardcore gamers, that's probably the sound of a star falling or the planet imploding.

There's nothing worst in the world than a game console crashing and then teasing you with error messages. And to think it actually occurred just a day after your warranty period expired.

So what do you do to perform Playstation 2 repair? Here are a few steps you can follow:

Do nothing.

We don't mean just sit there wallowing in misery. Do nothing if you're the type who knows nothing about the device or even the tools needed to open it, check it and repair it.

If your game console is still under warranty, taking it apart will void your only chance to get free repair service. If it's no longer under warranty, you could be making the problem worse by tweaking stuff you have absolutely no knowledge or skill to touch.

Before thinking of having repair work done, check to see if your Playstation 2 is plugged on in the right places or if the disk you're using is installed properly. These are common errors committed by gamers.

If the error exists elsewhere, best unplug your device and take it to your friendly Sony service center and have the professionals take a look at it. When they ask questions about what you've been doing with it, be honest. You'll be doing yourself and your Playstation 2 console a favor if you do.

Use the right tools.

One of the most common errors that could occur in your Playstation 2 is the 'Disc Read Error'. If this happens, opening the console will be required. If you'll be using an online guide as a reference, make sure to check out the particular model of your console to determine which part is which. Models that just came out usually don't have the same chip layouts on the console's motherboard, so some instructions may not be applicable.

For tools, you will be needing a pair of pliers, a can of air and the appropriate screwdrivers to help you remove the tabs on the console.

There are several possible errors that could appear with your console, so it's best to use guides to help you determine what exactly is wrong. Some resources you can use to guide you on your quest to repair your Playstation 2 console on your own include:

Just so you don't forget, we recommend that you don't touch your Playstation 2 to perform repairs if you're completely incapable of doing it. You'll be doing more damage than good. Consult your user's manual, go to the Sony website or try to get advice from other experts. Find a professional to help you. Only if you're truly confident about what you can do should you try to take it apart and fix it.
