Please Don't Poop In My Yard
75
The other day I had to make a delivery to my parent’s house. It was early morning (before 8 am) and I am not a morning person because I am a night owl. So I was barely awake but not in a bad mood at all. When I pull up to my parent’s house I grab the stuff I need from the front seat and proceed to get out of my car. I take one step with my stuff in hand, turn around and squish “Oh Sh*t!” I thought to myself and said out loud. And oh boy was that the truth. I had stepped right smack dab into a fresh pile of dog poop. So the next few minutes were the “get the poop off of the shoe while balancing everything in my hands” dance. The only problem was that while I was trying to get the poop off of one shoe my other foot landed in another pile. What the hell?!? I was livid by now and it would take a few moments for me to get back to that happy place. As I surveyed the grass along the sidewalk outside of my parent’s house I see quite a few patches of poop scattered about. By now I have completely lost it. I take my stuff up to my parent’s house and come back out with gloves and plastic bags. 20 minutes later I have gotten up as much poop as I can stomach only dry heaving twice because luckily I had not had breakfast or there would be another surprise in the grass.
I love animals really I do. I actually love most creatures even the ones that give me the creeps. When I was little I was known for getting off of my tricycle just to move a bug out of the way after all I didn’t want to squish them under my tires. Although I have never been a dog owner I have owned a few cats in my time I currently do not have any pets mainly because I have allergies and so does one of my children. This however does not mean that I don’t like animals. Like I said earlier I have great love for animals it is their human owners that really piss me off especially when they are totally disrespectful.
Now I have babysat enough dogs to know that dog poop is not a fun thing to have to deal with but I also understand that it is part of the responsibility of taking care of a dog. Regardless I still see many dog owners walking their dogs and not picking up after them only to have innocent bystanders and non dog owners having to deal with the consequences on the bottom of their shoes. I have gone so far as to yell out of my parent’s windows, dropping bags down so that the owner would pick up after their dog (of course they were cussing me out the whole time). But come on now. I am not the dog owner here that is their responsibility. Of course if they want to pay me then I am more than willing to accept responsibility.
Truly it is not that difficult to take care of a dog especially on a walk, after all that is what the walk is for; to get the dog exercise and to let the dog go poop. These owners don’t understand the fact that they don’t want their dog to poop in their house nor does the general population want to walk through their dog poop.
If you are such a dog owner here are a few simple steps you need to follow:
- Carry a bag – Carry a plastic bag with you at all times, if it is hard to remember attach it to the leash, if you do not use a leash then we have a completely new topic to discuss.
- Buy a pooper scooper – There are now so many pooper scoopers out that make it easy for the owner to pick up poop some of them even do it all on their own. There are so many to choose from I am sure you will find one that is right for you and your dog.
- Get a dog poop catcher – If you are still too lazy to pick up the poop then get your dog a dog poop catcher. This contraption catches the poop straight from the dogs butt. No fuss no mess. However it might take the dog a few tries to get used to it.
- Hire a dog walker – Hiring a dog walker means that you won’t have to pick up poop yourself because you hired someone else to do that for you.
- Share the responsibility – Walk with your spouse, your kids or a friend and have them pick up the poop. This way you are sharing the experience and the poop gets picked up.
- Teach your dog to use the potty – Train your dog to go poop in the toilet then you don’t have to worry about cleaning up after him/her. No need for a pooper scooper or a plastic bag.
You can see how easy it is to actually pick up dog poop. There are so many different alternatives other than just leaving the dog poop lying there for people like me to walk right through. So please people be responsible pick up your dog poop so that I don’t have to take drastic actions.

I could not agree with you more!!! I hate walking down the sidewalk, and have to dodge nasty piles of dog poop, because some jerk is too lazy to accept the reponsibility they knew they were getting into by owning the pet. Sadly, when I was a kid, we had a fenced in yard, and it was my job to clean up the poop. I know it sucks, but it needs to be done.
Goldentoad - Thank you! I feel for you that is another reason why I won't get a pet because I know that the responsibility would naturally fall on me and I am not in the mood for that at all. You should tell your wife that she violated the terms of agreement I am sure the penalty is extremely high; cash in quick!!
Anna Marie - I am sorry that you had to do that but I appreciate the fact that you did it and took responsibility. I just cringe everytime I see a dog owner standing by their dog with no bag or scooper in sight. Their laziness only creates problems for others. Thanks for your comments.
For the pets, We negotiated 6 unsupervised trips to wherever I want with the buddies, its been over a year and haven't cashed one in yet. However, next weekend, I am heading to Vegas, yeah baby!
There you go not sure if it is a fair exchange but sure sounds fun to me. Of course I am a closet (well not anymore) gambler so that sounds really good. By the way love your avatar, just went to Bruce and Brandon's grave site.
Really? That's a trip. I have been in a feisty mood lately, so I felt Bruce to be appropriate.
Yes its well worth it if you are ever in the Seattle area and you can also check out Jimi Hendrix's grave too. Yes that definitely connotates feisty alright lol.
Dog owners should be responsible poop picker uppers. I have owned dogs--I no longer do--and it's really not that hard. I bought a box of those cheap, disposable doctor's gloves, and you can just pick it up, drop it in the bag, and then drop the glove in as well. Take a couple of extra gloves with you and you're in business.
Christoph, I really wish that other dog owners were are saavy as you are. I just see too many that are lazy or just simply don't care. I think its relatively as well. Its part of responsibility and the right thing to do. Thanks for your comments.
I would also recommend trying to hire some neighborhood kid who you can trust and that you can hustle into walking the dog for you, but in my experience, I'm sure the kid wasn't picking up diddly as the dog did his thing.
Also- make sure the dog don't eat crappy junk food, they're digestive track works just like ours, its bad going in, and worse going out!
Great recommendations goldentoad. Hiring neighborhood kids can be good if they do infact pick up after the dog. I am sure some might but of course there might be a few that do not.
I'm with goldentoad - what you feed the dog is very important if you want to take some unpleasantness out of the poop clean up.
Great hub and great advice, Triplet Mom! BTW, your avatar is adorable!
Thank you Em. Hopefully so dog owners will heed the warning and watch what they feed their dogs.
I love my dog but I hate it when it's cleaning time! But I have learned to accept that like everything else in this world, you have to take the good with the bad. Besides the responsibility that owing a pet entails is little compared to the joy you get when you are around them. great read :D
Thanks Cris. I have learned that sometimes you have to do some things that we do not like to reap the benefits. Seems like you understand that. Thank you.

You are so nice to use the word "please" in your title. That would not be me. In fact, my title would probably be all caps, as in screaming.
I commend you for picking up the poo at your parents'. Do you realize you earned quite a bit of poo karma? My daughter taught me about that when we were out on a walk with our dogs one day. As we went along and she picked up her dog's poo while I picked up my dog's poo, I saw that she also made a few side trips to pick up poo that didn't belong to either of us. I asked her about it, and she said she was collecting poo karma to use when she fails to pick up her own doggy's doo. I think that's brilliant, and I've been working on my karma stores ever since.
Great Hub. Loved the poop song. Also, all the Amazon listings. There's NO excuse for not picking up after your dog.
Thumbs up!
Sally - Yeah please is a little nice, I learned "kill em with kindness" from my dad lol. Poo Karma is great!! I like the way your daughter thinks. I understand that sometimes you cannot get all the poop all the time but at least she is out there getting the poo that's not even her responsibility, AMAZING!!! Thank you for your comments and working on that poo karma.
Oh the poop song!! Scrubs is hilarious!!
I have a next door neighbor that has trained his dogs to poop on our front yard. He got caught one day, and tried to act like he was shocked at his dog, but we knew better. We'd seen him give him the command through the window. Anyway, later, when he went to get in his prized pickup, he got a surprise. He seemed to have forgotten that our dog is about 3 times the size of his. We haven't found any stray poop since.
It wasn't very nice, I know. And I'm not normally that kind of a person. But there's a limit to how many "squishes" you can endure before something snaps in your brain.
Loved the hub!!
PM - Sometimes you have to take drastic measures to get your point across. It seems that your neighbor needed a little friendly reminder, at least he got the point lol. Great story!! Thanks for your comments!

This is a sore subject at my house. I never agreed to the dogs or the rabbit, and I refuse to pick up their mess and it was noted in the terms of agreement with the wife, that the pets were her responsibility if she wanted them. Of course, that lasted a couple of days, and I was the sucker out there first thing in the morning taking the dog for a semi walk to do his business. fun read.
