The average clothing size in the United States is a size 14

According to several surveys including the American Demographics journal, Netscape and The New York Times, the average clothing size in the United States is a size 14 which is the size at which plus-sized clothing begins.   That means that the average American woman wears a plus size.

Regarding shapes, The New York Times reported that around 64% of women are pear shaped, while 30% are "straight," which means they have little perceptible waist.  But despite the fact that the average American woman is closer to a size 14 than to a size 8, most fashionable stores do not to stock sizes above a 10.  I am not specialist but I believe that the main reason is not a lack of market for plus size clothes but the difficulty to design for curvy or larger ladies.  Larger women have different proportions to slim women; usually they have more weight around their middle and much larger hips so it is not just a matter of sizing up a size 8 dress to a size 18 because that wouldn’t look right.  Designers need to re-design the clothes, which is not always easy or practical for mass production.

Curvy and larger ladies need special designs to fit their curves, enhance them and conceal problem areas.  This is why when buying plus sizes it is important to choose well.  It is not just a matter of price but a matter of design.  A well cut dress and appropriate material can make all the difference between classy and frumpy.

How to choose a plus size summer dress

  1. Go for flowy materials, the type that skims over your curves like silk.
  2. Choose the appropriate length for your size. If you wear a plus size dress, more than likely you will look your best with a dress that is, depending on your size, a few inches above or under your knee. Too short a dress and your legs will look chubby, too long a dress and your calves will look chunky.
  3. Accentuate your top area to draw the eyes away from more problematic areas like waist, tummy and hips. You can do this with a nice décolleté if you have a large chest or with accents like a necklace if you have a small chest.
  4. Empire dresses accentuate your top part and skim over waist, tummy and hips, so they are ideal if you have a straight shape or if you want to conceal medium to large hips.
  5. Halter necks also accentuate your top area while giving excellent support to a large chest and showing off well shaped shoulders.

Things to avoid:

  1. If you are heavy at the top then avoid spaghetti straps.  They will just make your upper body look bigger and they do not offer enough support.
  2. Avoid materials that will hug your skin because they will accentuate defects.
  3. Avoid large colourful patterns.  It is best to use small patterns especially if you are not very tall.
  4. Avoid shocking contrasts.  It is best to wear a block colour or shades of the same colour.  Always wear a lighter shade on your slimmest half and a darker one for your heavier half.
  5. Avoid see through materials.

How to wear your Summer dress:

  1. Prints: If you want to wear flower or animal prints then go for very small ones: Like the leopard print on Queen Latifah’s dress which almost blends as if it were a solid colour.
  2. Keep it simple; do not overload yourself with jewellery or accessories. Go for solid colour handbags and shoes.
  3. Whenever you can, wear your dress with high heels to elongate your legs and increase your height/weight ratio, making you look slimmer overall.
  4. Whenever possible wear corrective underwear under your dress to give you a smooth looking silhouette.
  5. Babydoll dresses are ideal for summer, not only do they add a touch of freshness to your wardrobe, but they are very fashionable at the moment.

I think it is easier for men, we just buy bigger trousers.

How do these women all look so fab? I guess the moeny helps. An american size 14 is a 16 in the Uk I think. Good hub for us larger ladies. Me I mean :)

You are right Brian, it is easier for men, but it is the girls who have more fun choosing :)

Ethel, it is nothing to do with money, they just know their shapes and make the clothes work to their best advantage. We can all look stunning within a budget, the trick is to make your clothes work for you, that is: enhance the best and conceal the less loved parts.

Great hub Princessa as always. I spent the bigger part of my life in my tailor shop trying to get full figured ladies to see that they are gorgeous especially if they enhance their best as you so well put it.

We plus sized gals have to work a little harder then the size 3's who can grab a feed sack and look good. But it's all well worth it in the end.

I love the green dress. I just happen to have fabric that is similar...I think I hear my sewing machine calling me.

I hope you're well, greetings to you and your family from sunny beautiful Ontario

Is the average size really 14? I think that's a UK size 18, and that is quite large.

I like your hub, and I think your style advice is brilliant. But the photo of Nikki Blonsky (don't know who she is) frankly looks as if she needs to shed some serious weight. Sure, she's making the best of herself, but there's an awful lot of woman there, especially around the tummy.

Thank you for this great article and lovely pictures. Women who smile with real joy, see a person with open eyes and take good care of themselves are attractive.

Wonderful hub that celebrates "real" women (cuz we all know real women have curves). Virtually all of these photos portray beautiful, confident women. What you see is their beauty, not that they are carrying extra weight...

BTW, Queen Latifah rocks! Thanks, Princessa for an excellent hub. MM

Hi Zsuzsy, I wonder if you have finished that green dress by now...

As a professional tailor your opinion on dress making counts a lot.  Thanks for the greetings too, nice to see you.

advisor4qb : Size is always relative, the most important thing is how YOU wear it.

mayhmong : probably because they are very flattering.

irene.trel : I find that the best thing is not to look too much at the sizes but try the clothes and see how they fit you.

Triplet Mom: Thank you for visiting :)

Skydweller : Hoping to help full figured women to make the best of their silhouettes.

Viryabo: Thanks for the comment.

Bala99: I think it is important to show women who wear plus size clothes that they too can look good and sexy if they dress appropriately for their morphology.

LondonGirl: According to the Surveys that seem to be the average size for American ladies. As for Nikki, well she is overweight but the point is that despite her excess weight she can makes the most of her shape; and anyway why should we conform to standard weights and shapes?

shakeelz and atikamon : thanks for stopping to comment and taking the time to read the article.

Kebennett1 : thank you for visiting I hope you get plenty of ideas in here, I am sure you will find some nice sexy dresses for a cool summer day and a hot summer night.

Tom: I am so glad that you mention that. Most women believe that men are after the “perfect modelled shape women” when in fact I believe that what men want is a sincere smile and a woman confident enough not to pester them with the feared “do you think I look fat in this?”

Mighty Mom : yes, that’s right, what we see here are beautiful plus size confident women and they look beautiful because they are convinced that they are so ! and yes Queen Latifah rocks!

Hi Glare, I think it is great news that plus size dresses can now be sexy and fashionable, as opposed to boring, shapeless and colourless.

The last few years, I've graduated to the plus size and found it difficult to adjust my thinking when it comes to clothes. I tend to still look at a garment and see myself as a size 5 instead of a size 14. We all want to look our best even if we're trying to lose weight, so this hub gives excellent advice. Thank you lady!

Good job with the dress collection. I am an American and I did not know that the average size was 14.

It is nice to see someone giving attention to plus size. My wife is a plus size and I love for her to wear dresses because she looks great in them. It still seems that we have this “must be skinny” thought process and to many times a lot of good looking women will not dress to their potential.

Princessa profile image

Princessa  says:

hinckles koma: that's the idea :)

iwhcpanties: Like I always say, there is dress to make a "Glamour Diva" of every woman, the trick is in finding that dress that will enhance your beauty.

Smireles: That is what the surveys tell us...

Cailin Gallagher: you are welcome! just be patient and work with your new size until you find your new style. Thanks for reading.

And thanks for all the other comments guys :)
