If you're someone that has lots of slides and 35-mm negatives to put into digital form, the Plustek Opticfilm 7200 Film Scanner is a pretty inexpensive option for getting an adequate job done.

Installation

With Lasersoft's Silverfast Ai software, installation is straightforward. Just pop in the cd, connect the scanner with the USB cable, and Windows automatically detects the scanner right away and you're ready to go.

Operation

There are 2 film holders, one for slides and the other is for strips of film. THe slide holder handles up to 4 slides at once, while the strip holder can accomodate six frames of film.

What keeps the price of this scanner so low is that the carrier has to be manually loaded, as there is no mechanism to move the carrier through the scanner automatically. Basically, slides or strips have to be mounted in a carrier and then slid into place by hand.

Performance

Cheaper film scanners are typically slow, but the Plustek Opticfilm 7200 pumps out scans at a decent rate. It may not be very fast, but its acceptable. Even at the max resolution of 7200 dpi, the scanner quickly outputs the images. With the dust & scratch removal feature (known as iSRD) turned on, however, scan times are significantly longer.

Detail

In comparison to other scanners in its class, the Plustek 7200 shows better detail, more dynamic range, accurate colors and sharper detail overall.

In an independent black & white test, the Plustek turned out very detailed scans with a nice range of tones. The iSRD function, however, does not work with black & white film and has to be disabled.

In an independent color negative test, the Opticfilm reproduced colors accurately with enough contrast and saturation. There is uniformity in the sharpness of the image, with no noise being visible. The Silverfast AI software that is included helped to achieve these good results.

Bottomline

Overall, the Plustek Opticfilm 7200 film scanner outperforms the competition and should be grouped with scanners that are twice its price. You'll be pleasantly surprised at the high-quality photos it can produce given its price point, and a major bonus of owning this item is the NewSoft Presto, PageManager, and LaserSoft SilverFast softwares that provide a combined solution for managing documents, tweaking images, and a whole lot more!

Given the high resolution and the price of this scanner, the few limitations it does have are pretty insignificant. We feel that this scanner is a very good value for the money.
