How To Start Writing Your Own Poem part 1

If you think writing your own poems is hard, you're wrong. It's something everyone with a decent command of English can do, and I will show you how.

There are many ways in approaching how to write your own poem. Let me share my favorite way to start writing poems. Let's suppose you want to write a poem about your mother. The first step would be to think of a particular theme. Just thinking about your mother is too broad. You have to narrow it down a bit. You may write about her character or some memorable incident with her in your past. You may write about her looks or describe your relationship with her in the past, present and future. All these are possible themes.

Once you've decided on your theme, you can come up with a title. Some people only think of a title after they've completed their poem. That's alright, too because often the poem's theme itself may change as you start writing. So don't get too hung up at the beginning stage of thinking of your theme. Just get some idea and start wrtiting.

In the next part of this hub, I'll share on how to actually write out your poem.

You Let Me Know You Love Me

You let me know you love me
In so many different ways.
You make me feel important
With encouragement and praise.

You’re always there when I need you
To comfort and to care.
I know I’m in your thoughts;
Your love follows me everywhere.

Thank you for all you’ve done
And given so generously.
I love you, my wonderful mother,
You’re a heaven-sent blessing to me.

A Love Poem for Mothers

Here's a lovely poem with the theme of love from a mother to her daughter that leads to her daughter's love for her in return.

It's entitled "You Let Me Know You Love Me"

Notice the words that rhyme. That's what I'm going to teach you how to write in my next section.

How To Start Writing Your Own Poem part 2

Once you've got your theme, you need to find the appropriate words to speak about that theme. Since this is a poem, it is expected that your words rhyme. This is where most people find it hard. But if you know this tip I will reveal to you, you won't find it all too difficult.

Here's how to find words that rhyme.

You find words from four basic categories. These four categories are categories of rhyming words:

1.  Words with the same suffixes or endings such as ‘tion’, ‘ty’, ‘al’, ‘er’, ‘est’, ‘ly’ etc.

For example, mother rhymes with brother, sister, father, greater, lovelier etc. Likewise, greatest rhymes with prettiest, gentlest, warmest, cleverest and so on.

2.  Words with partly the same spelling. For example, girl rhymes with curl, friend rhymes with send, turn rhymes with burn, sat rhymes with hat, mat, fat etc.

3.  Words with completely different spelling but the similar sounds. For example, sky rhymes with goodbye and why, guy rhymes with pie and my, slow rhymes with go and Joe.

4.  Words that sound similar enough to be considered as rhyming. For example, ocean and mountain.

Now once you know this tip, you can find your own rhyming words. Then you build your sentences around those words.

In the next part of this hub, I will show you how to make your poem pleasant to read.

Mom

Mom you are a shining star though the world doesn't know your name.
You have no fancy title like Baroness or Dame.

Mom you really are a star, my mother mentor and friend.
A Nobel Prize for motherhood is what I'd recommend.

And if I won the lottery I'd share my win with you
I'd take you Mom on a spending spree each day the whole year through!

You may not be famous, as your face is known to few.
But Mom I think you are wonderful and I'm so proud of you!

Another Lovely Poem for Mothers

This poem looks different from the one above. I'm sure you can notice the difference.

It's simply entitled 'Mom'.

Notice the format or layout of this poem.

This is what I will be talking about next.

How To Start Writing Your Own Poem part 3

The obvious difference between the two poems above are their format or layout.  The first poem, "You Let Me Know You Love Me" is a typical four lines a verse poem whereas the second one, "Mom" is a two lines a verse poem.

This shows that there is versatility in writing poems; there is no hard and fast rule.

However, in order to make your poem easily readable, it is important to have a consistent number of syllables per line.  For example, the first verse of the first poem has 7 syllables in each line whereas the first verse in the second poem has 15 syllables in the first line and 13 syllables in the second.

It is helpful to have a pattern in the number of syllables in each line.  They should not be too different.  For example if the first line has 20 syllables and the next few lines have only 2 or 3 syllables, it won't make your poem pleasant reading.

Mother You Are To Me

Here's a poem I wrote using these tips I just shared with you.

Mother You are to Me

Mother you are to me

My joy and inspiration

In you I always see

A life of full devotion

Mother you are to me

My hope when I am down

Though others may desert me

You will always be around

Mother you are to me

A warm hug and smiling face

I’m a living legacy

Of your wisdom, love and grace

Like it? You can use it this Mother's Day if you wish. Now to complete your loving gesture for your mother, get her a gift to go along with your poem!
