Poetry: Come Home
69A poem I wrote today.
I just finished this one. Thoughtful comments are always welcome.
Come Home
As sure as the sun comes rising up into the sky so blue
That's how long my love will last that I have for you
When autumn leaves fall to the ground and all else has turned brown
If love is like an ocean then in your love I'll drown
As sure as snow is icy cold and icicles hang from eaves
When you go marching off to war each day part of me grieves
I wonder where you'll lay your head and where your feet will roam
And each day I wish a wish that you will soon be home
As sure as seedlings sprout in spring and the crocus lift their heads
I look out to the trail you took and hope you'll walk back home instead
I cry enough to fill a pail and then I cry some more
And then I'm mad at the world and me for letting you walk out that door
As sure as tomatoes ripen in summer and pumpkins big do grow
I put my back into my work and sharpen up the hoe
I mend and prune and clean and milk until the sun dips out of sight
And then I light the candles on the windowsill to guide you home tonight
