Step Wise Demonstration of Poker Basics

The limit of playing the game of poker is very important, even before starting the game. This decision needs to be arrived on a collective basis by all the participating players of the game.

Poker Basics, Step 1: Placing an Ante

Every participating player of a poker game has to put a token amount of bet on the table, he/she is playing. This is known as “Ante”.

Poker Basics, Step 2: The Process of Dealing Cards

After the Ante has been placed in the pot, the dealer of the table gets into the game. The dealer starts to deal the cards on the table. First he places the cards face down and then starts distributing them one-by-one to the players, starting from the player sitting to the dealer's immediate left hand side. In case, the dealer is also playing the game then he/she will deal the last card to himself/herself. The dealer deals 5 cards to each of the participating players and places the remaining cards of the 52-card deck in the middle of the table.

Poker Basics, Step 3: Who Starts the Game in a Conventional Poker Game?

The player who is sitting at the immediate left of the dealer starts the game by placing the first bet. The second bet is placed by the person sitting to the very left of the first player. His process of placing their bet continues in this clockwise manner.

Poker Basics, Step 4: Choices of Playing Differs with Starting the Game

If you start the game, then you have the following choices:

  1. Open the Pot: You can place any amount of money within the decided limit

  2. Check: You can refuse to start the game and want to watch others playing before making your move.

In case you have not started the game then you have the following choices:

  1. You can see the previous player's bet and “See” it, which means place an equal amount of bet as the previous one.

  2. You can also “Raise” the bet by putting an amount more than the previous player's one.

  3. You can “Fold” in order to stop loss to a certain limit. This is a way of surrendering your cards and lose the amount won still now. Through this you can restrict your loss to a certain extent only.

Poker Basics, Step 5: Replacing Unwanted Cards

3 cards can be replaced by you from the cards, placed face down, in the middle of the table. This must be noted that, when another player is discarding or choosing a card then other players can't see it.

Finally, the player having the best hand wins the game.
